Here's my take on the shorts controversy. I think it's perfectly acceptable to wear shorts walking around your house, going to the store, even casually walking around the pedestrian mall downtown or lingering over a cup of coffee in the coffee house with a friend or two. However, I think it looks just wrong when playing an instrument on stage.

Is this the consensus around here?

I have said many times that shorts onstage are totally unrock, archival pics of Rollins notwithstanding. Usually shorts onstage are nowadays accompanied by shaved heads and pointily-sculpted goatees as well. I shudder.

I am willing in some cases to make exceptions for drummers. They are the athletes in bands, and deserve some slack. Most of the time they are like newscasters behind a desk anyway, and we have no idea what they look like from the waist down.

There's a blues piano guy here in the local scene, fairly youngish, too. Goes barefoot on stage, sitting at the piano. I can't stand it. The whole time I'm sitting there and his feet are distracting me, I'm thinking, what is with the hippie look, put on some damned Converse or something.

I have seen a few that transcended it, but most just look like jackasses.

Again, some drummers need to remove shoes. I understand this. One of the finest drummers I know requires socks only to be able to play his best.
