all trivia and no sense

hard to think how such a fire got started with no ability to stop it. Insane the amounts of artworks that must be being destroyed. (well, the ones that were not destroyed by the French Revolution enlightenment peeps)
|
an update an hour ago that fortunately the structure survived. meaning the stone structure which could have collapsed due to rapid heat or who knows what else.
the spire that burned apparently was a 19th century reconstruction of the original, so there’s that. this tweet came out of la fenice today: https://twitter.com/teatrolafenice/s...919228928?s=21 |

anyway. this morning's UK employment stats were tight as expected. lowest unemployment since 1975?
|
Found it interesting (and unfortunate) that the Associated Press article this morning about Notre Dame in the FIRST paragraph said the city was “recently rocked by violent demonstrations.” Only at the end of the article was there mention of the large amount of old dry wood in the structure and the presence of old flammable wood preservatives (they actually used resin and olive oil) and the use of cutting torches.

this makes no sense. a building burned. the only apt comparison is to ask what houstonians would feel if astrodome burned down. either way.... |

i mean lol not even — ps- i hope you go to paris some day |
I love Paris. But a city to me is not it's superstition buildings. My Paris is a Paris of ideas, and atheism, and intellectual revolution, not a church built by a king to cover up an old Roman site of worship.

that church is not about religion anymore. or should i say not just about it, because for some people it obviously is (not for me, but that’s irrelevant). what ive been trying to tell you in various ways but seems im not getting my point across is that your little personal spectacle about your antireligious views is the stupidest kind of speech to be making while a great city with great history that loves art like no other place i’ve ever been is mourning the (luckily, partial) destruction of one of its great mythical centers. mythical, not religious. but religion is all your see with your mad blinders. i mean, you’re being as rude as the asshole who shows up at a funeral to start selling life insurance to the mourners like it’s a great opportunity to remind people they can be next too! hey who cares about what you feel, just buy my product. im your friend here man, and sometimes a friend has to grab a friend from the collar and drag him out of a party when he gets too drunk and starts to act stupid. shut the fuck up about religion for a moment and let’s go eat a hamburger or something. im buying :D |

it is called "code switching" Black and Latino people switch from the language they use around white folks to try and stave off their goddamn racism and jingoism ("proper" English), to the speech patterns and vocalizations that are used in their respective communities. Most white folks do not do this probably because no one with any real power is judging them.
(very poor white people that have been educated will do the same tho, in order to talk to a co-worker as opposed to a relative who would better understand the language and slang of their roots.) |

no prob. I didn't know you were French. I guessed you were Catholic. I never said I was happy that Notre Dame caught fire. I hate the forces that enslaved millions to pay for that fucking shit (France AND the Vatican) |

that is the definition of religion. |

ssssso, nancy pelosi says no us-uk trade deal if ireland peace process is harmed by brexit lmao
(trade deals need the approval of congress) |
Pffff...
French billionaires offer hundreds of millions of euros to save Notre Dame (our good president's said in 5 five years it'll be all brand new - our good liar). When you donate, over half of what you've paid will not be claimed from you on your income taxes. Over 20 weeks of protests against the govenrment's decisions and their impact on the biggest part of the population, and millions of euros are being found. How sweet... |

... and a kiss on the cheek too, you're right.
|
there’s an article on the washington post about tax deductions for donations, and how the public ends up paying for most of those donations. the french deduction is like 66%. i’ll link for you later
at the same time, forbes is saying “ dont hate the rich” who are donating for reconstruction. haaahaaahaa i’ll try to post both. — originally came here to say an off duty journalist was shot dead in a northern ireland riot. she was just watching near the cops and caught a bullet. damn... |
@bertrand— here is the forbes article
https://www.forbes.com/sites/stephen...k-the-wealthy/ the opposing one comes later |
i was looking for the article and found this photo instead
![]() yes i am a bad man ![]() |
ANYWAY, found the article which basically argues that for every euro donated by a billionaire the public coffers have to pony up 2
https://www.washingtonpost.com/polit...nt-thank-them/ in france, where 50% of the population pays no income taxes, that means the middle class has to carry the load The lesson is that if we are to celebrate the generosity of donors, we should acknowledge that French citizens are in fact paying for the majority of the giving in the form of tax subsidies. It’s not just giving, it’s giving that is underwritten by the public. What’s more, philanthropic tax incentives give power to individual donors, especially ultrawealthy ones, to dictate large amounts of government spending, regardless of other citizens’ spending priorities. contrast vs. the forbes article above |
the forbes guy is a supply sider and takes it too far
im tired of the discourse that infinite tax cuts lead to infinite gains just does not bear out. we’ve known this for a long time now. and yet they insist. with no evidence. |
im afraid to look at news of the sri lanka bombings

Horror.
when religions fight, it is a battle between deluded dipshits which will not end until on or both sides are all dead. |

Debate between Jordan Peterson and Slavoj Zizek https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGRC5AA1wF0 Fan of both but ultimately more convinced by Zizek - although lots of valid points from Peterson. Both fundamentally oppose identity politics so at times it felt like they were struggling to find areas they could disagree on. Plus an absolutely horrible audience, treating it like a contest. Still a great watch for anyone into this stuff. ![]() |
wow i *just* read a mention of this debate maybe 3 hours ago (in a letter of protest for cambridge weaseling out on peterson's invite, published by the nyt today)
thanks for posting it |

It's pathetic. Even if people disagree with Peterson he's a credible and relevant voice. I'd like to think Cambridge will lose a lot of academic credibility over this, and outside the university bubble it probably will, but inside it, where group-think is now the law, they'll no doubt be celebrated for it. I'd say it's a joke, except it isn't even remotely funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=umShVeDoAR8 |

Feel like this might be the rare time where we all agree with each other on this one. No idea how it got to the state where people are so afraid of listening to other people's opinions that they'd rather shut it down than listen. I was arrogant to think that it'd just be confined to American colleges, but the grim reality is that it's hit here just as bad. |
man, zizek needs a dentist vacuum to drain that mouth. it's hard to understand at times. i have to retune my ear and even then it's 9/10.
|
haaaa haaaaa just finished listening to both speeches-- now they're gonna talk
so far, peterson was absolutely no-nonsense whereas zizek was brilliant i really enjoying this |
