I haven't seen Rogue One yet, so skipping that wall of text until I've watched it. :)

I saw it and didn't like it. I found the whole idea of the alien's origin really underwhelming.

As a sidenote, has anyone read any of the Alien novels? stuff like Earth Hive, etc. I'm really tempted to get one of the omnibus editions. ...

It's funny - you and I sort of overlap w/ love for the franchise, but seem to actually prefer different entries than each other.

I've not read any of the novels, sorry. I've been thinking I should really start tackling all those comics though. My wife got my the collection of Batman/Aliens crossovers for Christmas actually.

yeah! Even though the collected book is called Batman/Aliens, it's more appropriate to refer to it as DC Aliens (which I think was the original collected title). So yeah, there were brief crossover DC comic series of Batman, Aliens, Superman, Predator... a bunch of that stuff is collected into one book. (Not all of it apparently, as there were lots of random little one-shots).

I thought it a great action flick. If Star Wars is a 9 and Empire is a 10, then I wold give Rogue One a solid 8. I liked everything.

Just rewatched this for some reason. It was actually quite good for an action flick, and I think I understand why Marvel is so consistently beating DC in terms of popularity.

The answer is pretty simple. Disney. The pretext was that Marvel was taking a risk by letting Disney buy its studio. Ditto for Star Wars. But Disney has the best track record in history when it comes to popular franchises. Now Marvel is a Star Wars-sized cultural phenomenon. Bigger even. And forged in a much smaller amount of time.

Buuuut... I don't think any of these films are gonna last, or be talked about 10 years later like the (sorry) Nolan films. They rely too heavily on CGI. Some of the costumes are 100% CGI, and they're going to look dated as hell in five years.

Captain America is the best part. And out-of-costume RDJ. But watch: in five years Black Panther and Spider-Man are going to look like the first Toy Story.

I think the term "mafia" refers specifically to syndicates from or originating in Sicily. In Naples, it's the Camorra, unless I'm mistaken.

Yeah Gomorrah is great, its unlike any mafia (or organized crime) movie I've ever seen, intentionally shows the criminals in a unglamorous way, all the violence and death, but none of the coolness of most American mafia depictions, which is why its so good. I can enjoy Goodfellas and the The Godfather as much as the next person, but its refreshing to see the other side of it.

I'm a couple of months late with this (or 9 months early, depending how you look at at) but anyway. Good stuff; the funny bits are funny and the creepy bits are creepy. Surely destined to become a Halloween movie staple.

sure, if you wanna get anthropological the movie is about the camorra (rhymes with gomorra), but few people know that word; whereas the word mafia is now english (and part of other languages as well) so one can say stuff like russian mafia or mexican mafia or gay mafia or swedish house mafia, and generally communicate

but yes this is not about sicilian incursions into naples (though the two used to be the kingdom of two sicilies, and all sicily way before). this is about just naples and caserta.

the movie is great! just watch it. like a bunch of episodes of the wire jammed into 2 hours.

I was just trying to seem smart :( Hah! Anyway yeah, mafia's used broadly at this point, and I guess distinctions between syndicates are unnecessary. In fact, I've noticed a lot of shows and even movies use the term universally ("Irish Mafia," "Russian mafia," "Greek mafia"), which leads me to believe colloquial definition of the word has won out. This is actually kinda sad if you think about it... filmmakers not bothering to do the research necessary. But whatever.

You've sold me on the film man. Will watch. I'm all for zero-glamor in crime movies. One of my major gripes with the Sopranos is that it decided to maintain a relatable protagonist over depicting the characters with a consistent level of despicabiloty. Sure they all had their pathetic moments, but it ran for six seasons so there was plenty of "oh, that's our Tony!" lovability injected into the characters, and it felt like a missed opportunity at the end.

Anyway, I'm on it.

P.s. The Sparrow and its sequel actually have a lot to do with the Camorra. Much of it takes place in Naples... At least.. you know.. when they're not all in space. ;)
