all pedophile relationships are dysfunctional by definition. someone kill boring ass woody allen finally...

evollove 09.25.2017 12:13 PM

Manhattan: I don't know if they are being honest or not, but he and the co-writer Marshall Brickman thought the relationship was supposed to be funny. And c'mon, it IS sorta funny. Ever see a couple like that and not laugh?

maybe it was funny in '79 but these days just looks gross.

which is kinda my point... times and mores change because first time i saw this i paid it no mind (no it wasn't the 70s... more like the 90s...)

Are you sure it's not just Woody's personal life which is coloring your perception? As I look at that pic, I still think they are a silly-looking combo. I want to chuckle, not barf.

Did you know: Woody hated the film so much, he begged the company to not release it. Said he'd make them another one for free.

Meanwhile, he insists Hollywood Ending is one of his best.

What a weirdo!

well yes kinda sorta but not really

there's scene in a... gallery? boosktore? i forget where-- woody and diane keaton run into INCONCEIVABLE! (from the princess bride) who turns out to be her ex husband (lawrence or something?) and isaac (woody) says that homunculus was the gread ladies man? and she says yea.

of course inconceivable looks alot like isaac but... worse!

so it's either 2 jokes or it's confirmation that homunculi can be great in the sack.

but see, i used to have this diminutive college friend who drove this hot curvy woman into stalking him. when she approached me to cooperate in her stalking enterprise i refused but asked her what she saw in him she told me some obscene details i'd rather not repat.

so yes homunculi can be viable sex partners for beautiful women i say. why--you gotta ask them

soi don't know. i gotta get back to work so i must cease for the moment.

Severian 09.25.2017 07:03 PM

Homunculus as small person or homunculus as ghost in the machine-type-thing/phantom dude chillin’ in one’s prefrontal cortex?

Based on context clues, I’m guessing small person. But i don’t remember this part of the movie. Whatever.

Anyway, the relationship in the movie is creepy. It’s also funny, but it’s creepy and fucked up, and it was creepy and fucked up when the movie came out. At least a little bit.

But time has definitely had an impact on it. It’s kinda like... well, most romance films from the ‘50s and ‘60s, that have an air of casual but still pretty brutal sexism. Or, like, have you ever seen the “White Christmas” pre-quel/inspiration “Holiday Inn?” It’s kinda like that. Like, I’m sure it was adorable to have Bing Crosby perform in blackface in 1952, signing about how Lincoln freed them slaves, but it’s hard to watch that shit now and see it as anything other than totally fucked up.

Technically not pedophilia if she was 18 though. Still gross.

!@#$%! 09.25.2017 07:40 PM

right. exactly.

except for the pedophilia part-- pedophilia applies to prepubescent children. no?

fucking a willing, sexually developed teenager might be statutory rape per our social mores, but it's not the same as fucking a (brrrrr!!) an actual-actual *child.*

there's a serious biological difference between those two things, i don't know how we can conflate them or think they're one and the same. they're both wrong-- but theyre not the same.

Yah yah you’re right.

Pretend I said “illegal” instead of “pedophilia.” Pedophilia is, clinically, a *child*-specific sexual impulse. Jesus, even typing that makes me feel like I belong in Hell.

Mortal Kombat.

Sure it's held up about as well as a kipper in a microwave.

Netflix had it slated for removal soon, and I had it on my list, so hand was forced. Of course cheesy as hell, but so were the 90s

Finally saw Arrival.

I liked it but maybe I was expecting too much. I couldn't find anything wrong with it but it didn't blow me away or anything.

Not... blown away... by... Arrival?

B-b-b-but but... but... ughhh!

demonrail666 09.27.2017 05:56 AM

I liked the concept but if I have one criticism, it's that I felt Jeremy Renner and Forrest Whitaker (I'm a big fan of both) were wasted slightly in roles that could've been played by pretty much anyone.

As for not being blown away, I liked it but I thought Interstellar (while different in many ways) was a better film, certainly in terms of its emotional weight.

Interstellar was fucking awesome.

But I’ve gotta say, Arrival hit me harder. The last few minutes of that film had be bawling like a baby.

I agree that Renner’s role in particular could have been handled by just about anyone. But I liked him in it. Whittaker did a fine job with his smaller-than-advertised part.

Really it might as well have been a one-woman show. But I think that was a deliberate decision. Focusing so squarely on Amy Adams’ character helped suck the audience into her experience, which is what the whole thing is based on of course.

I think it’s completely ficking ridiculous that she didn’t get an Oscar nomination for this one.

Looks promising, though the resolution wasn’t very high on the vid I watched. Still, looks good man.
