So, Austria's on lockdown. But people can take recreational walks. Knowing this, I thought now is the time to up my camera game. So I got myself a used (but in immaculate condition) Canon Eos 40D. Four days in, and I can already tell this was a great decision. The saturation and the resolution of this baby are so much more satisfying than what my former model (a 700D or Rebel T5i) could conjure up. I have much less of an urge to color-correct my pictures in post or work with contrasts/gradation curves. The in-camera features cater much more to my aesthetic needs. The pictures turn out just as moody, smooth and saturated as I want them to. The resolution is a massive step-up too. At the same time, it's not too in-your-face, it's an older model after all. Just the way I like it. Here are a few snaps from the last few days.

Maybe if I type this and delete it soon afterwards, my followup post will appear too.

I know this thread is about pics taken by board members, but I feel I must mention a recently departed master:

ah! even more reason.

maybe it was the moment or the framing or my own paranoia projecting things that are not there, but it looked to me like he was taking all the space and pushing her into the corner without noticing she's there.

which could be a metaphor for some marriages haha. but without knowing that this is what i saw there. i still do....

I love how deceiving photography is, and you make sense in that that particular composition doesn't really give away any signifiers about how those two people may be connected to each other. In other shots he's holding a cheap corner shop blue bag with her stilettos in it after a night out. They are a couple who used to live in my neighbourhood and then disappeared. I used to talk to him on the bus a bit because we worked on a similar schedule and happened to bump into each other while commuting. He was always drunk and seemed like a nice guy.

haha, yes, the camera always deceives (and reveals), and then the eye of the spectator deceives too. i couldn't have guessed it was late at night, i thought it was tired commuters at the end of the workday (my own bias).

anyway i would also like to add that your street portraits are the best. i'm loving that new set of black and white photos. great subjects all, and my favorite favorite favorite composition is this one:

Hey thank you, that's one of my favourite shots. It's part of a project I've been working since Sept 2021. My friend used to run that pub, so I used to go there with my camera and just take photos of people almost every week. I now have thousands, which I am still sorting out. Some of them are on my website.

Occasionally I like to experiment with shutter speed. These are some of the results.

The guy's car was pretty nice and clean to start with. I've used a Sigma 1.4 lens with, if I remember correctly, the ISO set to around 2500 on the camera to expose it better in dodgy lighting. I normally don't go higher than that. In post-production I've lowered the highlights a bit and when I did the black and white conversion I've tweaked the noise reduction on Luminar AI to see if it compensated for the high ISO. Not that I'm averse to low light noise in some situations. In a way, when I look at the final results now, I think this photo is a little too overdone for my liking.

aaaah thanks for explaining, and yes it's not in the style of all the rest, so "not your style" maybe, but it's great in its own way regardless, like a desaturated nicolas winding refn film still. and your grasping of the subject doesn't suffer in the least (for me anyway), and if anything i'd say the finishing adds to it by making the car also the subject.

Some impressions from last Saturday's Vienna Pride Parade (basically Vienna's Christopher Street Day). I documented the group "Vienna Decay" - a loose association of DJ*anes, event organizers, musicians, artists and partygoers in the more staunchly left-leaning Goth and Post-Punk spheres of Vienna. While the images may not be technically perfect, I still like how they turned out:
