Just a quick thought: Danny might have been half-joking there.

infinitemusic 11.08.2009 02:34 AM

Black Sabbath is the only metal band

Death & the Maiden 11.08.2009 04:10 AM

Lately I've been listening to a Japanese thrash band called Rosenfeld. The music is okay, it's not particularly amazing, but the vocalist, Hisayoshi, has the best voice I've heard in metal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXq4rARIEKM

Metal is too formulaic for my tastes.

King Crimson

atsonicpark 11.26.2009 05:35 AM

One indieguy I know once tried to like Through Silver In Blood but putted it off after 2 songs.

I mean come on....

DeadDiscoDildo 11.26.2009 10:14 AM

I dont like metal

ni'k 11.26.2009 12:10 PM

i'm going to form a metal band and make an iraq war metal video cos that's what they all do. i will talk about my feelings and my heart and soul and how tough it is to be a man and general shit about "fate" "road" "lonely" "gods" "war" and suchlike while i am filmed in the deserts of utah so it looks like iraq. and everyone will be like "that guy's such a bad ass this music is so serious". and i will just smile knowingly to myself, but in the solo i will frown.

loubarret 11.26.2009 12:18 PM

Will you do the crab dance to?

ni'k 11.26.2009 01:13 PM

yeah. so my beer belly will flop down and crush all my actual crabs.

loubarret 11.26.2009 01:38 PM

Cool.

You might form a band and make beer belly core.

Pass off your thread as just "a bit of fun" if you want, but that is a cop-out.

It is a problem rampant among so-called "indie kids" that they are so bitten by the "irony-as-fashion" bug that they can no longer recognize when the authenticity bug is biting them right in the nose.

This is especially typical of the Pitchfork-teat-sucker who is duped by the authority vested in Pitchfork to like a band like Girls because their singer grew up in a cult. Just listen to their music and see if it stands up.

Listen to Poison and see if it stands up. Of course....it would be a buried memory without VH1's "I Love the 80s" and "Rock of Love". So surely it can only be enjoyed ironicallly.

But what's so ironic about Motorhead. "OMGLOL...Have you see their singer's face moles???" Nevermind that. "I'm vegan because everyone else in my dorm is...but this band wears a lot of leather, and yet I still like them???" Dude...just cut the bullshit and listen to the music already! Tell me it doesn't make you feel something. Even 30 years later!

It is a bit of fun though. I don't give a shit about what other people would think of my listening habits. I love Motorhead! I went to see them when I was 13 and it was the first show I had been to and it blew my mind. I also never read pitchfork nor follow what they like. And the few bands I've had a good listen to that they thoroughly support feel weak and mediocre to my ears. I fully agree with everything you said, but if it was pointed towards me then please don't assume I think that way.

Besides, I started this thread when I first started posting here. I wouldn't make this thread now..

as someone who's mostly in to metal, I've noticed a lot of indie kids loving Wolves In The Throne Room, Boris, Torche, Trap Them and a few other cool metal bands. Thing is, if I try suggesting they listen to metal bands that are along those lines like Nachtmystium they seem to be uninterested. Then they find out Boris brought them out on tour and become interested. Is there like a Pitchfork compiled list of metal that is and isn't okay to like?

wellcharge 11.26.2009 07:11 PM

nachmystium is rad, although i only know the new ep

vulva 11.26.2009 07:13 PM

Listen to some early Dissection or even Darkthrone's Soulside Journey.

Or or Portal! Listen to Portal!

soulside journey is their early stuff which was more death metal with slight nods and hints towards a black metal future. Not crusty at all, but it's really unique within all the subgenres of metal. Just some sort of magic that can't really be emulated since it was a band who were playing death while on their way to something else. It's hard to explain, but it just worked out perfectly

As for Dissection, The Somberlain and Storm Of The Light's Bane are both great, especially storm. Reinkaos was so bad it led to Jon killing himself.
