And I like taking your piss, dear, but this is neither the time nor the place for whispering sweet nothings.

Didn't really make much of a splash from what I can tell. I've heard almost no fan babble about it since it came out, but it's definitely one of the year's early high points. Just my opinion.

I thought it was very good and sounded more like their earlier work than their later albums... Maybe you haven't heared many people talking about it because it's not officially released yet? (i think it's out on March 30th here...)

Well, I got my promo a few weeks ago, so that's probably what it is.

It's officially released today in the states. I'm just saying I was hearing and reading a lot about it for a while, but the excitement seems to have died down. I guess that's somewhat understandable... I mean, they're a fairly "old" band now, and they've been out of commission for a few years. I guess it's not a huge shocker that interest has waned.

Maybe now that the album's actually out, I'll start to hear more about it from SYG users and folks at the record store.

It's not due out in the states until April 11th, and even I haven't been blessed with a promo and I moonlight at an independent record store.

I've listened to snippets here and there, though... Sounds super fucking official. I'm pretty excited about this one.

_tunic_ 03.24.2015 12:44 PM

I've no idea who that Eric Holm is, but I love that sleeve so I'll give it a listen whenever it's released
(edit: you can streaqm it here: http://www.factmag.com/2014/04/07/st...-album-andoya/ )

Anyway, the new gy!be album can be streamed here: http://www.theguardian.com/music/201...s-album-stream
only heard it once so far, that last track sounds a bit weird to me, there's one guitar too high in the mix, especially compared to how it's played live. But I'm not complaining :)

is it released in states this year? coz it's been released last year, and unfortunately by the time I found out about this release it was sold out in physical form. so I would love to see it re-released. you can stream (record ;-) whole album here :

http://www.factmag.com/2014/04/07/st...-album-andoya/

p.s. you can get it on discogs and I actually waiting for a right moment to grab it, whenever I have 40 quid to spend on another vinyl :-). really nice album.

well to see them live is the best experience, no matter what album I would say. I've seen them twice. amazing.

I mean, they are about live, listening their albums a home or in the car was always weird for me, they don't sound like they would sound live. I don't know how to explain it.

must check out their last one though.

you already know the story behind cover art and music by now:

island of Andøya, an outpost 300 kilometers north of the arctic circle.

attaching a single contact mic to remote telegraph pole that connects the island’s array of military listening stations.

Severian 03.24.2015 03:55 PM

Oh yeah, the new GY!BE! I've read soooo many fan write ups about the album that contain massive, glaring errors, mostly having to do with the band's discography and where this new release falls in the narrative of their existence:

For example: "'Asunder...' will be the band's first LP-length release since their heyday in the late '90s."

WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA???

Seriously. I can't recall any of the specific offenders, but I do know that there have been several that have caught my attention since news of the album broke.

Just weird ass muthafuckin' shit, is all.

Yes, they are definitely a band that needs to be seen to be truly experienced. I can attest to this. Early Lightning Bolt love shows were like a force of fucking nature, a monsoon in a crowded living room. One of the best live bands I've ever seen.

So after hearing more, I'm pretty sure this is going to be one of the year's best albums. I can't wait to pick it up. I'm not sure a promo will come in for this, so I may have to wait it out, but ... This might be 2015's A U R O R A. I'm pretty pumped.

bloodcrystallisetosand 03.26.2015 03:16 AM

Feeling the Fennesz right now, trawling through the back catalogue since loving Becs - I'm a bit late to the party. Currently on Black Sea. One of those artists where you think "why was I not listening to this five years ago?"

Kinda, only a lot of us were listening 5 years ago. Black Sea might be my favorite.

Bécs ended up more or less dominating my 2014. In the end, I had to put SYRO and Ben Frost's insanely beautiful, scorching, chaotic A U R O R A ahead of it, and I'm still actually trying to decide if Dub Thompson's 9 Songs (my personal "oh thank the lord, punk still exists" record of 2014) deserves to be above it or not... But up until November, Bécs was my album to beat.

Soon as I find out where it lies in the top ten, my top ten (at least) will be complete. No it's just 12-100 that I'm wprking on. Hah.

Maybe I'll post the top ten in order, and leave the rest on an equal plane for the sake of not letting this fucking list take ANOTHER year to finish.

Well, I have this now. Let's just say where there's a will there's a way. Preordered copies from Subtext's distributor too. I wonder if I can stock it on the shelves since the recoed was technically out in Dec 2014 overseas.

For a proper debut, this album is a hell of a thing. A serious undertaking. And despite how different it is sonically from AURORA, I think my previous comparison holds up. This is a revolutionary drone/noise/ambient event.

Everyone should check this shit out as soon as humanly possible.

Severian 03.26.2015 06:23 PM

Holy fucking shit this album sounds incredible.

I really hope some people and give this amazing record a listen based on the recommendations from greenlight and myself. I'd love to hear the thoughts of anyone who does so.

Listening to the new GY!BE

So far, I'm feeling a little torn. On one hand I've always fancied myself a diehard fan of the group, and just having another album feels like kind of a blessing.

But on the other hand...... I'm not sure this is going to be what people want. He first track culminates in some very fine jamming; stuff that sounds like it could have been on one of the more traditionally musical SYR releases. It has an almkst improvisational feel to it, and it almost feels new.

But I'm not really sure how I feel about the ambient deconstruction that makes up so much of the middle section. There's a place for ambient noise, of course. But I think people want GY!BE to bring them into the eye of a hurricane. They want epic, important music that sends a message a serves a purpose.

I need to listen more of course, but the first impression wasn't jawdropping. I think they need to be DONE with the tried and true 4-song album model. There's something missing ... this band needs to get their groove back.

You know, as much as I enjoy shamelessly holding forth about music in massive, impenetrable blocks of text which I then plaster onto the walls of the internet without solicitation.... I've gotta say, I kind of hate "music journalism."

That is, album reviews and stories about stupid crap that happens in Jack White's I-don't-give-a-fuck life. Biographies, interviews and big-picture features about music's place in society and culture are easier to swallow.

But even though I'd totally do it myself if the opportunity was present, it's INSANE to think that some people make damn good money getting free copies of albums and writing down their first-impressions (and THATS ALL). Really, it's really fucking insane. Less legitimate than sports writing... hell, less legit than sports commentating.

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

lindsey buckingham is pretty talanted. very varied in song writing and vocal styles. something i always knew but now taking into regard. Holiday Road is the best movie jingle.

!@#$%! 03.29.2015 06:34 PM

the new lightning bolt (FANTASY EMPIRE)

IT'S SO FUCKING SPECTACULARLY GOOD

they lost me with earthly delights which while as skillfull as ever i found a bit emotionally too dark/heavy for me. what i always had loved about them was that while it was an intense sound there was always a joy and freewheeling energy there and that was gone from earthly delights-- maybe i misheard, maybe it was the timing, who the fuck knows. i should give it a relisten.

in fantasy empire the speed is maybe slightly slower (age happens) but their ability to squeeze out insane noise from their instrument has multiplied manyfold (age happens too). holy fuck they are destroying my brain and i am happy. thank you thank you thank you. i have waited so long for this.
