Gosling? But Drive is most definitely the best of the Refn movies, and Gosling went from suckass lottle Disney shit to capable — almost singular — actor. You gotta Gosling block inside your head... you get over it :p |

Haha. That'll explain why I always wondered how Gosling could be so enjoyable in Deadpool but leave me cold in everything else.

Have mixed feelings about this one. Might take me a minute to get my thoughts together. Worth watching for sure, but... somewhat problematic in other ways. |

So... OK. Mid90s was good. Ok? There was skill going on with the filmmaking. It was a compelling story. BUT... 1.) It’s basically an ode to KIDS, only from a rich white guy who plays hood-culture anthropologist (Jonah Hill) 2.) Some of the scenes are uncomfortable and upsetting to an almost gratuitous degree. I think Hill has skill as a filmmaker, but he’s throwing out some cringe- and depression-porn to fill in the holes where the story fails. Again, derivative of KIDS, only that was authentic. This is 100% acted and scripted and *formed.* 3.) It felt a little bit like culture trolling at times, and there’s a black character who might even be borderline stereotypical in nature (though genuinely lovable on screen). Something about the presence of a wise, black man looking out for our dipshit protagonist feels a little... ah... Bagger Vancy to me. I don’t know. Might be offensive to some. Left me unsettled, but brought several smiles and a tear or two. Worth watching, again. But not one I’ll watch again. |
Out Cold. I can't argue with an early 2000s general comedy.

First time watch. Feels all too relevant today. Can also see how much this movie influenced The X-Files. |
Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story This wasn't at all what I expected but actually more interesting for it. I got it hoping for the usual Kenneth Anger-style gutter-glamour gossip, but it turns out, before all the meth-amphetamines and plastic surgery, Hedy was actually a bit of a science whizz, who invented tech still used to this day. |
Bombshell is a great documentary.

I've gotta say, this is a pretty damn spot-on assessment of this film. Watched it last night, read this, and pretty much agreed with it all. Watching it really did fill me with an odd nostalgia though. And I often found myself thinking "Yep, that was the stupid shit I did in high-school. That totally is my crew." SPOILER: Like, especially the scene where they get in the car with the drunk driver. You think, "Who would do that?!?!" And then I realized, "Oh yeah...I did...multiple times at that age..." I completely agree with it not fully feeling as "genuine" as Kids and all, but I do feel that the idea of needing such acceptance at that age really does still come off pretty well. |

and just finished the last lunchtime installment of this classic
yes yes—at times, so fucking ponderous! i guess it must have been a huge thing to greet star trek again in 1979 after more than a decade off the air. and the whole slow moving spectacle of the musical space tour must reflect that—which is lost to our perspective of everything on the web all at once. but still, while not a great movie, a good star trek film—true to the roots and philosophy of the original series. the real deal. will watch again. |
Yeah, I'm not a Trekky by any means but I have a real soft-spot for that film. It felt like a let down at the time, coming so soon after Star Wars, but it has a charm all its own.
