Matador has been rarely been a good label at all. So incosistent it makes you turn your head the other way without batting an eyelid.

At least we can say this about Matador: They really care about people's opinions on them.

...

They must have a low self-esteem.

Matador's Cosly Apologies for Acting Like Tony Victory

Sep 24, 2008

Want to know one of Matador Records' secrets to running an independent label? Don't be that guy from Victory Records.
In the wake of some sort of message-board melodrama that's, frankly, even less interesting than it is mature, Matador's Gerard Cosloy issued a long and, remarkably, less interesting than the original melodrama, apology for said melodrama. We'll skip the long-winded stories other than to say Cosloy took issue with the way users of a Sonic Youth message board were painting Matador Records' treatment of its bands. In the process of his apology, Cosly revealed the label sets its moral compass partially by avoid Victory-like tantrums and tactics -- something he forgot this time around.
"People sometimes ask me, 'what's the most important lesson you, Chris and Patrick have learned from Tony Victory" and after I look him up on Google to make sure I don't get him mixed up with Tony Curtis, I reply that we're all about respecting the audience's intelligence.
"ie. whatever we observe Tony doing, we try to do the opposite."

that's why i hate label worship/hatred.

it's incredibly dumb.

Cantankerous 09.25.2008 12:08 AM

cosloy just comes off as a fuckign tool. every time.

uhler 09.25.2008 12:34 AM

hahahaha i can't believe people in the indie record industry abide to not be like tony victory. this guy that i work with is an ex straight edger from chicago (we always talk about the "good ol' days" at work) and he told me tony victory likes to have threesomes in bathrooms after snorting lots of coke and he got thrown thru a car windshield once. he now has bodyguards.

Cantankerous 09.25.2008 12:36 AM

tony victory sounds like a good time.

I hope so.

I hope he also read where I said "that would be awesome if it comes to Pittsburgh."

But Wowee Zowee and Brighten the Corners never get old for me.

i used to like some of the bands (snapcase, earth crisis and a few others). but now they are just shits and giggles. their new roster is the worst shit ever.

i don't count deadguy as a victory band.

Then there's a bunch more posts about the state of the thread or the state of this message board (like this one and floatingslowly's which usually start with "I love how..."), a few people laughing or being smartasses for a while, then the thread dying.

Until about a week later when it gets bumped, gets about 3 more replies.

3 months later, it gets bumped again, with someone going "haha." and someone else going "Why did you bump this?" and me going "Yes!"

Then it's forgotten until about 6 months later when someone goes "remember that thread where we said fuck matador a bunch? Wasn't that funny?" And someone bumps this thread again with "bump :)" and no one replies.

Carry on.

It's kind of depressing isn't it?

That's why I generally stay away from these sorts of threads.
