Oh, not to steal the spotlight from Yeezy, but ... The (kind of) new Quasimoto came out today. Sounds... Like a bunch of really bizarrely chosen b-sides. And that's pretty much what it is. However, I bought it because I do not own most of these tracks legitimately.

All this hype about Kanye's new album is making me want to revile and totally ignore it.

Your loss, man. Why ignore an album because people say it's good? I used to have that impulse myself, but I can't say I recall why. Anyway, best if luck with all that.

noisereductions 06.19.2013 07:16 AM

alright so first listen impression:

jaw on the floor omg wow.

Yeezus is like Kanye fronting Suicide. It's just, wow.

Didn't MIA already do that a couple of years ago? Did kanye rip her off?

hahaha I don't know yet. Let me put it this way,

I'd say YEEZUS is the most impressive album of the year (so far). So uh, "Best Album" of the year so far?

But I'd still probably call LONG.LIVE.A$AP. my "Favorite" album of the year (so far). It's the one I"ve listened to the most. The one I keep going back to.

Does that make sense? They're my Top 2 albums of the year so far, but in diff ways.

LongLive grows on me more every time I listen, but Yeezus kills it. I can, however, easily envision a future where I find LongLive more enjoyable. It is not better, or even really comparable. But it's a lot less emotionally intense. Yeezus has some moments that actually kind of hurt.

Fronting suicide... Funnily enough, when I think of how much pain I can hear behind the voice on this album, I think of In Utero.

Lots of people are making lots of stupid jokes about this album. Anyone read the Entertainment Weekly piece about Kanye and Lucille Bluth? It was a quiz comparing the lyrics on Yeezus to the satirically empty social tunnel vision of a white woman so privileged that her prison is a fucking spa resort.

Apparently EW thinks white inherited wealth = ridiculously awesome / black "by the bootstraps" wealth = just ridiculous.

I hate having to sound like a knee jerk liberal, or one of those "cultural sensitivity" nuts who calls Nas racist for naming his album "Nigger," but fucking Christ that shit is insulting.

I'm totally thrown off this year. As incredible as Yeezus is (made me cry a little today... Not gonna lie), it's only fair to give it more than a day before placing it above new releases by a shitload of my favorite bands and artists of all time.

So I'm still going to have to say "the Terror" is at the top of the list. I could rattle off a top five for the fuck of it, and Yeezus would most definitely be in there. It's the best hip hop album of the year, but whether I prefer it to new MBV, Deerhunter, or Boards of Canada... That will require some serious consideration.

Severian 06.19.2013 08:28 PM

Have you guys caught that verse about Beyonce and Jay-Z in "Blood on the Leaves?" I heard it without the annoyance of work activity or (ugh) conversation today, and my jaw dropped.

I can see why foreverasskiss thinks I'm a pussy; the extent of Kanye's jadedness, hopelessness, and sense of betrayal are heartbreaking to me. It's not just political angst and social injustice that are eating away at him. It feels like it's his own life.

On first listen, the album's ending felt like it came out of nowhere. But the more I hear it, the more it makes sense to me, and the more fitting it feels.

Fuck Facebook, EW, and any other source that talks this album down with the same cliche's used to slam Real Housewives of Wherever the Fuck and other trash media. Way to keep hip hop from achieving universal and cross-cultural legitimacy by convincing the world that the most legitimate artist in the genre is fucking Brett Michaels. (Oh, but keep repping the shit out of Macklemore, who is of course the real deal, especially since he sells songs to the MLB and sings about gay marriage and equality while in the same song taking pains to make sure nobody thinks he's gay. Twat.)

You beat me to it, louder. You're making me wish your username rhymed with more things that sound like sexual innuendos. All I can think of is chowder, and that could work but it would be reaching.

Fuck me, the new Deltron. Really happening.
All we need is for Kool Keith to make an album that isn't horrible, and the Cold Vein sequel to not fall through. I think I would quit my day job if that were to happen. I mean, who would expect me to function with that much THC in me at all times.

... Seriously, this is as big as a new MBV. Bigger perhaps, because MBV at least left behind a catalogue. We're finally getting album 2 thirteen years later.

word new Deltron is indeed exciting.

@Sev: there's been a handful of decent Kool Keith albums in the last... decade. I loved Thee Undertakerz. And Deisel Truckers was pretty solid.

And um... hmm... well Nogatco Rd. was pretty alright. Project Polaroid was not bad. Hmm.

All true, but Im still waiting for an album that's better than pretty good. Novatco Rd was my favorite of that bunch, for what it's worth. Not bad at all. I should have chosen my words better.

Severian 06.21.2013 06:13 AM

Wait what the fuck am I talking about? Thee Undertakerz was the best of that bunch. Ugh. Mornings.

noisereductions 06.21.2013 06:57 AM

I'm glad someone else picked up on the awesomeness of Undertakerz. I feel like that one flew under the radar of most folks, but these days I'm just as likely to pop that in as First Come First Served when I need a Keith fix.

noisereductions 06.21.2013 06:58 AM

OMG YES!

In April, A$AP Rocky told reporters that he'd be releasing an album of self-produced instrumental beats later this year. The project now has a name and a rough release date: Beauty and the Beast: Slowed Down Sessions (Chapter 1) will be out before the end of the summer as a free download. Rocky told MTV that the album would be a mix of "really druggy, ambient shit" and would feature "classical music and boom-bap Wu-Tang shit mixed together." (Via FACT.)

Thee Undatakerz are the shit.

Just about ANYTHING Kool Keith as ever done is the shit, but especially when Kutmasta Kurt is involved (he is like Billy Cox to Jimi Henrdix, a perfect sonic fit)..

So we simply can't forget the Diesel Truckers/Dr Dooom eras (and please lets try to forget all about that terrible resurrection of Dr. Octagon because that shit was wack and thats why Dr Dooom 2 had to kill him again). Sometimes I almost wonder if Keith brought back Dr. Octagon JUST to mock himself and have a more visible motivation to go underground again with Dr Dooom/Mr Nagato

I can't say I'm really as informed about Keith as I once thought I was, and I definitely feel that he's made/been part of more "Okay" projects than insanely good ones, despite being an insanely good rapper in general. Still, I thought Ther Undertakerz was the best thing he'd been a part of since
Octagagon. (The first Octagon, which is the only Octagon)

Black Elvis and Dr. DOOOM are my other big picks, but I think the first Dooom and Black Elvis were both attempts to recapture the feel of Dr. O without having to repeat himself...Undertakers felt fresh to me, but for some reason it was just fucking reviled by critics and I don't know anyone else who likes it.

So other than Uktramagnetic Mc's, that's about as far as I go with Keith. Love the MC's, love Dr. Octagon, love half of Black Elvis, love both Dooom albums, and the rest of it I either haven't heard, have heard, and sucks, or I just plain don't know about it.

I don't know the politics behind behind the whole thing, but why is it that Keith, Kurt, and Dan have never been tempted to make a true sequel? One would think it would have more cult appeal than Deltron, which is still bringing in new generations of college kids who don't like rap, but wish they did.
Heh, I'm kind of kidding... I love Deltron more every time I binge on it for six months (which happens every couple years or so... I'm just curious as to why a proper follow up never happened. Why did Keith even entertain the notion of a sequel with another production team? Why the hell did Nagatco sound so ... I don't remember, honestly, but it wasn't the same. That Octagon sound came from a perfect mix of people. Are they feuding, or are they afraid of failure or what?

I'm a huge fan sev, and have like everything the guy's done. But honestly the last decade has been ROUGH on him. More bad projects than good. And again, comign from a dude who probably praises the bad ones more than 'normal' folks.

I disagree. I think that the only "bad" project he did in the past 10 ten years was that Dr Octagon revival which was clearly a bad attempt and some kind of commercial revival. The reality of Kool Keith is that dude is meant and I dare say DESTINED to remain perpetually underground. His hip hop is art, but without being that contrived "art-rap" like Andre 3000 fiascos.

Dr Dooom 2/Diesel Truckers/Thee Undatakerz/Mr Nogatco/even Tashan Dorrsett have all been solid Kool Keith material, just not quite as popularly received as the first Doc Oc was in like 1998. I don't think Keith ever WANTED to be famous or celebrity or even popular so much as successful, and in that regard, the brother is making a living recording music and performing stage shows. I think he ain't complainin though I heard he was hinting about "retiring" which in Kool Keith world probably means inventing yet another character to rap as ;)

you're basically just agreeing with the ones I said were good though. What about Personal Album, White Label, Lost Tapes 1-3... all pretty bad.

Like I said, I love the guy and am always interested. But I'm not going to pretend I think every album is solid.

How's Yeezus sounding to you guys after a solid week of complete immersion?

It's got me on yet another "all Kanye every day" kick, but I've definitely overdone everything but Cruel Summer, which I seem to appreciate more and more with time. Course there are some tracks that I've yet to see the good in... But shit... Two albums are not going to tide me over for long.

Maybe I'll pull out Watch the Throne, whichI effectively ruined for myself by playing it to death when it came out.
