I did see that he gave Kids See Ghosts a 10 and Ye an 8 though. So he’s growing on me. I’ve agreed with most of the 2018 vids I’ve watched (U.S. Girls, Nicolas Jaar, Death Grips, Car Seat Headrest... all great... Drake, terrible).

What the fuck is Fantano? What the fuck are you people talking about? Who the fuck are you?

You told me about this thing once ... when I asked what the album was that you posted after all you posted was a textless cover... what was it? Some kind of service you recommended I use. Internet-based maybe? I wanna say... Schmoogle?

That’s the “fat version of me” you’ve heard me bitch aboit for not reviewing albums the right way. Yes there’s a right way... no I do not know what it is. No there’s nothing wrong with being hefty. Yes there’s something wrong with being as thin as I am. People think I have tapeworm.

ANYhoo... he’s a YouTube music reviewer who has become something of a celebrity in recent years. I didn’t realize it until last year, but apparently he goes to MTV award shows and stuff. For what it’s worth.

Anyway, he might be closer alt-right... that seems to be sort of up in the air... but he’s given 10 ratings to Kendrick Lamar, Swans, Death Grips, Kids See Ghosts and a few other deserving artists. He’s growing on me, I’ve gotta say.

I meant “closet” alt-right.

I hear a lot of accusations but have yet to see any evidence.

I'm too sexy for this board.

Deaf Wish, Lithium Zion, because of comparisons to Sonic Youth. "Deep Blue Cheated" sounds like Thurston guest vocals.

It's one of the few punk albums I know that has a summery vibe.

Wire’s “Pink Flag” has always felt super summery to me. Especially “Mannequin.” That was my summer cruising music in simpler times.

!@#$%! 09.02.2018 01:49 PM

been listening for days not chopin’s nocturnes in perpetual repeat

the way this guy plays them it really brings out their baroque core—with a really light hand on dynamic changes, unlike the usual “romantic” interpretations. or should i say roots rather than core.

also somehow pointing towards satie

im mostly listening to his left hand ha ha ha ha ha

wish there was a record of only the left hand

No, I really just mean literally driving around in the summer time. From class to basement where my band practiced, out for beer and other things. Yes there was usually a girl on my mind, but I didn’t mean “cruising.”

Burzum - Hvis Lyset Tar Oss

I've never gotten sick of this one in all the years since its release.

Spiritualized - “And Nothing Hurt”

Finding it hard to stay focused this time around. Used to treasure every Spiritualized album, await it with baited breath and play it to death .... but I dunno. It’s good, but I’m not blown away or anything.

Haven't heard a single note yet, and won't until I receive my copy. :) But the reports I've read about Mr. Spaceman using bits of recorded classical music... I kinda dig it — sounds positively Basinskiesque!

Yeah, it’s good. Very good. But I think I’m kinda over the Lips/Spiritualized/Low era when every new release was the highlight of my year. There’s just so much out there that I wasn’t listening to when I was 16. But it’s early days.

I ordered the pretty deluxe edition LP. But I’m not gonna wait on that shit.

Lately it's been My Morning Jacket's "Z" a ton.

Lay Low is such an awesome song.

Yeah, that is a really solid album.
Do you think MMJ ever came close to hitting that mark again? Personally I think it was their peak as a band. Circuital and Evil Urges didn’t leave lasting impressions on me, and I never properly listened to The Waterfall.

The Okonokos live album is probably the closest they’ve come to repeating Z’s success, but that doesn’t really count.

It Still Moves is good too.

dirty bunny 09.18.2018 11:01 PM

Honestly I kinda forgot about MMJ for a while. I did listen to Circuital though and I thought it sounded pretty dang good.

I forgot about them too. But back in ‘05-‘06 it felt like they were poised to either become the next Wilco or the next Flaming Lips (they couldn’t seem to quote choose; little bit alt. country jangle and krautrock thump, little bit psychedelic freakout), but then they seemed to fade from view a bit.

Can’t be blamed for forgetting about them.

I’ve even forgotten about Spoon a little at this point, and they’re a much more consistent band. But Jesus, Spoon was primed to inherit form Wilco as well, but after 2010, they never really had another album that splashed with more than critics.

Sad what’s happened to indie rock in the ‘10s.

Ain't that the truth. I feel like so much of pop culture and music is so recycled nowadays. There's no originality left, or it's completely undervalued.

But yeah there was a time when I too thought MMJ were going to keep making records like Z, and then they kinda faded out of my consciousness.

Still, great record that.

Definitely a great record.

I was encouraged back in 2012-2014 by some great indie releases from Black Bug (the world never knew thee!), Dub Thompson, Thee Oh Sees and more. Now (Thee) Oh Sees release a record every eight months and nobody cares; Dub Thompson never became a thing; Black Bug broke up after releasing perhaps the single best scuzz-noise-industrial-punk album of the decade (Reflecting the Light), and bands like Perfect Pussy just fizzled and died.

Cat Seat Headrest still makes great indie rock. Fan base is a little uppity, but damned if the music isn’t smart, catchy, genuine and ass-kicking. Apart from them/him, I can’t think of much else that’s been consistently good and big enough to keep going in recent years.

:(

But yeah. Z is good.

dirty bunny 09.24.2018 11:48 PM

I'll have to check out Car Seat Headrest. I think I'm just getting old. I have lost interest in exploring new music. Fortunately for me there's such a huge backlog of great bands and music from yesteryear to listen to and appreciate.

I'm listening to Attack of the Grey Lantern by Mansun.

This is such a great frickin' album. It's a grower.

Car Seat Headrest is trendy as fuck but undeniably solid rock.
