i watched a dark one and a goofy one, as follows:

under the volcano (john huston, 1984)

albert finney is something else, and this movie is great, just great. speaking of botox earlier, and by implication its opposite, which is nothing, jacqueline bisset knows to how age beautifully without injections. ok lol maybe she got some cheeckbone additions but not much else. just saying, she looks perfectly human now, which is great. but back to the movie: it's literally magical, and i want to read the legendary novel that begat it, but i'm afraid of being poisoned by it.

the goofy one:

robin hood: men in tights (mel brooks, 1993)

haaahaaahaaaaaahaaaaahaaaaaaa

not mel's best but still a good time

tw2113 03.01.2022 01:29 AM

Mel's worst are still better than a lot

Hmm,

Latest movies I have watched? The Bob Odenkirk movie NOBODY. It was fun, but overhyped. It was a lot like the cool hyper violent indie flicks they used to make in the 90's.

Yeah, it was a little overhyped, but I still liked it. Better than the John Wick-type fare. Action felt like had consequences — love it when people are gasping for breath and stumbling around during fight scenes and barely landing their punches. More visceral that way.

I watched Other People with no prior knowledge of it. Very sad film, also very funny. Odd mix but it works. And what a cast, man.

Also watched this little Hulu joint called We Broke Up with lady from You’re the Worst/The Boys season 2 and awesome dude from The Good Place. It was pretty good. Short little thing, felt pretty true to life for a rom-com (which it kinda is and also kinda isn’t).

indeed. I liked it more than my wife did.

Anyone else on Letterboxd? https://letterboxd.com/tw2113/

Severian 03.08.2022 07:45 AM

Pretty good. Too long and self-serious to the point of melodrama at times, but still — pretty good. Not the best Batman movie, but I’d say definitely the best Batman (as in the guy in the suit).

No performance in particular blew me away, but it was good overall. Different from predecessors, but it seems to have (mostly) picked up on the good things from the previous Bat-films.

There were parts I actively did not like but oh well.

Rob Instigator 03.08.2022 09:30 AM

I am down to see it

Watched The Kings Man on HBO. The Brits sure know how to make a prequel that doesnt suck. They should teach Hollywood.

the poster is probably better than the movie itself, but it has its moments

!@#$%! 03.08.2022 04:55 PM

this past weekend i started watching TITANE, a french movie. i had seen the trailer at the movies and it was stressful, but it made me curious. the actual movie however was FUCKED UP and not long after the half hour mark i was unable to stomach it anymore and killed the program.

lucky for me because i was able to finally watch ARRIVAL

to play off tunic's comment above, this is a bit of a stupid poster that doesn't really want to make me watch the movie, but when i found out it was a denis villeneuve film i figured it was gonna be good. and it was great!

robinstigator gave it a good review long ago and i think severian too, but rob hates movies i love (haha) and severian if i recall has a positive amy adams bias (justified, but still), and i didn't know villeneuve back then, so i postponed viewing until a favorable occasion... and it sat forever in my queue.

thank fuck titane's dehumanizing gore porn sucked shit, because i was able to see this instead. so very good!

I also couldn’t make it far into Titane but ARRIVAL is one of my favorite movies I’ve seen in the last 5-6 years. Like sure Amy Adams is great but the film itself is such an achievement
It manages some real narrative acrobatics without any of it feeling cheap. And the ending absolutely wrenched my guts out and twisted them but also somehow made me joyful.
Beautiful, brilliant film and Villeneuve’s best if you ask me.

Vampie https://letterboxd.com/film/vampie/ and yes it's as bad as it sounds

tw2113 03.20.2022 08:45 PM

BTW, Everyone go vote in the latest poll for which movie I write about next https://upallnightmovies.com/luck-of...es-a-new-poll/

tw2113 03.20.2022 10:14 PM

Added Call Girl of Cthulhu which is equally as bad, but has nudity too. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2689354/

Severian 03.22.2022 06:58 AM

The Boy Downstairs: Indie-ish rom com with the girl who plays Shoshanna in GIRLS. My god what a long hour and a half that was. Imagine two people with zero chemistry being “in love” but pretending to hide it for a whole goddamn movie. That’s basically the thing.

Windfall: New Netflix movie, another Hitchcockian thing with Jesse Plemmons and whatshisname from Forgetting Sarah Marshall or whatever. It’s a plod but it’s fine.

Spider-Man: No Way Home: Fun and insane, sometimes dumb as all hell, sometimes sad. Not Oscar-worthy but one of the better Spidey films from the best Spidey franchise.

Will Smith!!!

Severian 03.28.2022 07:13 AM

Last movie I watched was Licorice Pizza. It was good but could have been better with some edits. Production design, etc., was great but the film had some flaws/things that didn’t land/were unnecessary.

Will Smith hit Chris Rock on love TV apparently

which are...

i thought the slap was maybe okay, but yelling "fucking" afterwards made him look bad (thanks japanese tv for the unbleeped version).

"everybody hates chris," lol, but props to him for keeping it together in the moment. also as some mma folks mentioned he's "got a chin," which, indeed, he did not tumble, and remained fully conscious.

(unlike the academy, i condone a little bit of violence in matters of honor, hahaha)
