yeah! i rewatched it this past weekend--it was better than ever. my favorite character is still the existentialist squire, but this time i liked the knight a little better--that was a nice maneuver he did... the first time i saw it (likely on a bad vhs) i didn't pick up on certain details. or maybe i forgot them over the years.

the criterion edition is just great and the channel has some nice commentaries i watched afterwards.

ahahaha. classic. i think a lot of people our age wanted to be geniuses. in other eras people wanted to be football players or instagram influencers or whatever. but no, fuckit, i wanted to be "a mad scientist."

we never got those comics. i saw the hulk and thor on some bad cartoons that never made sense... i think might have been shown out of sequence lol. and then they had that lou ferrigno show with the green paint that was so bad.

i did like some of the xmen movies though, when i saw them as an old, really not knowing who was who. it was some really entertaining shit. then they made too many sequels and meh.

i think they put warnings on the capes now lol

toko! hey! good to see you back.

i dont know this lamb of god, but the opposite of death would be... sex? more sex films in our time would be great. not porn--there is too much boring porn. but good grownup sex art.

anyway yes, art is pure deception but it doesn't lie about it. know what i mean? art says: i am a dream. like the projector being lit up in bergman's "persona" or the ear in the ground in "blue velvet".

one of my big problems with religion (the religion i grew up with anyway) is that maybe they have a good idea or two but then they claim they are THE ONE AND ONLY TRUTH lmao. fuckem.

oh damn im late for breakfast now. bbl

Diesel 04.26.2022 09:44 AM

Watched Ti Wests' X: would be best described as a soft porn version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre/homage to the 70's heyday slasher genre. Utterly predictable at every turn. Nowhere near as good as Wests' Innkeepers or House of the Devil.

!@#$%! 04.26.2022 10:45 AM

anyway i watched the fucking breakfast club because people keep talking about it like it's some important cultural reference, and i just had to find out wtf it was.

what it is: genexers as seen by a boomer. tellingly, it opens with a bowie lyric from 1971. but ok, bowie has endured well. this movie, i think not. it was cringeworthy.

some of the stuff was okay for its time i guess, the whole united nations of high school cliques having a peace summit or whatever... ok. but the ending... the ending is fucking ridiculous.

prissy hairdo as a cure for borderline personality disorder? lmao. just fucking absurd. the feral appearance on the crazy chick was a better look anyway. keep the black stuff around the eyes! jeezus. terrible fucking makeover. would not date. and suddenly, she's holding hands with emilio. lmfao. figures...

oh and the pseudocriminal's little victory gesture? hahahahahaaaaaaaa! goddamn, so stupid. o well. it was designed to bamboozle kids.

basically the underlying "message" seems to be not that everyone has something in common (overt, read twice "message"), or that differences should be tolerated or even encouraged: but that low status persons can score with the popular kids with a few gimmicks and "win" at life. yeah for a day or two if they can keep up appearances lololol.

but anyway the stuff with the kid with the personality disorder was just so fucking bad. all she needed was a bow! hahaaaaaahaaaaaaaaaaaa.

i was never a john hughes fan. he'd get half of things right and hilarious, and then ruin the other half with some corny conformism shit. well he's dead now so no use piling on the guy, but his ideology... was not good. or maybe it was pressure from studio executives, who knows.

Rob Instigator 04.26.2022 11:12 AM

fuck John Hughes. Everyone of his movies is actually about how much better it is to be a typical conformist.

right?

spoiled sociopath ferris bueller wants a fancy car. ok, funny movie, and on the surface anti-authority but... not really. he just wants a world of servants, and rationalizes fucking over his friend. entitled asshole.

the various molly ringwalds where all she wants is to get with the rich kid.

other derivative similars i can't remember the names.

freaks and geeks (tv) portrayed 80s middle class teenage life much better. well in part because apatow was actually there. but... there's also a kind of realism and lack of wish fulfillment bullshit in it. like when the scrawny kid goes out with the cheerleader... and it sucks for him, as he finds her boring hahahahaaaaaaa. which is truer to life!

also the actual emotional problems of the troubled kids dont go away with an opportunity with the better off, wtf. they're still fucked up. eg the "drummer". things go better for him when he finds someone who likes him as he is.

just much better writing, and not a fairytale. pity it was cancelled. too good for advertising sugary sodas i guess.

Rob Instigator 04.26.2022 02:33 PM

I HATED it when they prettied-up Ally Sheedy.

Fuck John Hughes.

I enjoyed the movie when I saw it a few months ago - it's pretty good considering that it could just be aimless and it's targeted at an audience that normally wouldn't be down for "sitting around and talking for a day" - but this has always been the weakest link with it. Was there ever a time when that was the preferred look?
(Also I'm very lucky the character named Claire is the other one, I would have never been able to claim there's no link otherwise.)

hahahaaaaa

yeah here we were yelling and shaking our hands: "what da fuuuuuuuuck!!!" at the tv.

also she doesn't look "pretty" but fucking ridiculous. like a poodle. fucking tragic. an utter violation. ugh!

the preferred look... 1950?

oh speaking of the 50s reminds me of the trashy transformation in "grease" hahaha. wtf olivia.

anyway breakfast club i now deem a horrible sinister movie because it appeases on the surface but pushes for conformity in its depths. utterly manipulative. a fitting film for the reagan era. that was another "nice" killer.

maybe try "freaks and geeks"? much better, i swear. or at least i'm blind to any of its possible massive flaws. wayyyy realer. smarter. funny too. too cool a show to be really popular.

re: claire/molly ringwald, we liked her other dad (harry dean stanton) bettter. that man had a great talent for portraying a loser. but loser or not, he was real, his character felt like areal human, know what i mean? her dad in this one... is some plasic douche with 3 lines.

ps a good aimless movie: linklater's "slacker". fucking great! hahaha. i want to rewatch it soon....

Shame, I wanted to watch that one

Big fan of Ti West, although he does have a tendency to struggle with third acts overall

Rob Instigator 04.27.2022 11:50 AM

I watched around 45% of the Foreigner (Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan).
I forwarded through the endless crap about IRA and bombing and the UK politics.

I wanted to see if it was Jackie Chan's TAKEN, and it was not. He was good in it though.

TBH, I have not seen the last 30 minutes.

!@#$%! 04.27.2022 12:34 PM

wattstax!

i love this movie. i don't like all of the music in it, but the interviews are the best. this is was i think my 3rd or so rewatch.

I liked this movie, as I mentioned here
It's not as lame as so many of the other Jackie Chan movies, but yeah I'm European so I might be more interested in it's politics. :)

I'm currently watching The Adam Project, starring Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo. Can't say much about it yet, I'm only 20 minutes in it.

Breakfast Club is about finding commonality among those who are different from you.

What's wrong with that?

I was hoping for a more psychological Innkeepers style film, I didnt know it was a slasher going in and when I realised where it was heading my interest flatlined, essentially because slashers are generally too predictable and boring. The bloody ;) genre peaked over 4 decades ago - Halloween and TCM will never be topped so why even go there?!

If you're a Ti West fan then I'd say it's still worth a watch as there are moments of inspired weirdness - as fleeting as they may ultimately be - to be found here. There's a prequel filmed and already in post-production releasing soon.

Rob Instigator 04.27.2022 03:25 PM

This guy?

Diesel 04.27.2022 05:01 PM

His films do contain black humour, but thats^^ the wrong kind of black innit...

There is a rapper in X, Kid Cudi or summit, never heard of him. Has a full frontal nude scene, looking like long dong silver.

I just watched X tonight, and yeah this feels pretty accurate.

At least we got to see some titties?

Diesel 04.28.2022 05:03 AM

...and jizz, and horse schlongs. Tis all a bit tacky, innit?

Wests' characters have gone from talking about porn in his movies to him literally making porn and it's beyond the pale. I tell thee.
