This is getting a lot of love, but to me it’s pretty much Lightning Bolt with some more major chords.

Maybe I’m missing something/over-estimating their older stuff. Shrug.

Really badass album though, of course.

Joke Harmonika - Killing Joke

From a series of “personal trades” sometime between 2007-2009

Preemptive strike note: the following opinion has nothing to do with whoever here has the opposite one. Unless they're mooks.

Good LORD do I hate Nine Inch Nails. Bland, watered-down, contrived, unfathomably overrated disgraceful applesauce misinterpretation of Reznor's claimed influences, compared to which they're basically Up With People.

I'm gonna be completely honest, I could never really get into NIN. I was with someone today and it was suggested we could listen to some NIN, so I piped in Downward Spiral online knowing about its status and wanting to give it another shot. I think it's well-made, but it doesn't really move me in any significant way. I don't quite share your strong hatred for him (because I do see some of its appeal), but neither am I really stoked about his output. I guess it'll always be that sort of project I don't mind hearing somewhere in the background, but he'll probably never completely win me over. Oh well, I've tried.

Who you gonna call? Trent! Reznor! Better than anything the sorry fucker's actually ever done.

I feel like about 1/2 of Trent’s NIN output is excellent, almost unintentionally and despite all the goofiness. The other half is pretty missable, to be honest. But... the best NIN stuff is really quite classic to me. The peaks of PHM-Downward Spiral and the peaks of Fragile, some moments on 2000s stuff. Oh and the Perfect Drug.

But I get why it would be loathsome to some people and utterly cherished to others.

Just listened to the three tracks Have A Nice Life have released as singles this year. Both "Science Beat" and "Lords Of Tresserhorn" have an immersive dreamy quality to them, "Sea Of Worry" hasn't fully won me over yet. I'm looking forward to when the new album drops later this week though.

and, yes, Morphine

The thing is, the booklet doesn't specify which is which and who played what where when. In fact, the liner notes (which are very good) read, "If you'd like to know more about what's in Sandbox, dig in. Listen to the CDs, watch the DVD, but don't expect to read about it here. Music doesn't come with a map. Mark knew this, so he spent his life blazing his own trails, finding the connections that lead from point to point, idea to idea, style to style, until they took him to a place that was entirely his own".

As much as I like knowing every detail I can find (and I have a tall wide wall dangerously jam-packed with books and shit that shows it — now that I don't have a place of my own the whole mammoth is adjacent to my bed, so the next earthquake is bound to kill me), that's a pretty refreshing statement in an era when everybody's a know-it-all and an "expert" because they read somebody's discography in Wikipedia on their fucking phone while they were riding the subway. That is one thing that really pisses me off: with so many cold hard facts now instantly available to everyone, it should be the time to build on them and come up with opinions of our own. Instead, every motherfucker just repeats the same crap, because obviously at the very least 98% of the human race is incapable of having an original thought.

[Sigh] I miss you, Mark. You were one of a kind.

Been on a metal kick lately. Away from the board for a while, cheers to the long time boardies. Not much SY in my diet lately, or any live shows of any kind since MBV 2 years ago maybe? I’ll be back to it at some point. Life is complicated.

Cool, I’ll check these out.

Just saw this by Audrey and Kate, Japanese pre-teen youtubers who play Rocksmith, have done a bunch of sick/adorable covers of Slayer and others on that platform. They are starting to write originals in various styles. Reminiscent of the Goo kids singalong earlier in their history, now have gained some formidable skills and express age-appropriate punk/metal angst with an animated video to match. https://youtu.be/zJOtb1wqDAg
