Anglicanism: the Thought and Practice of the Church of England Illustrated From the Religious Literature of the Seventeenth Century, compiled and edited by Paul Elmer More and Frank Leslie Cross (1935, SPCK). Its a mighty and comprehensive selection of works.

And yes, I'm well aware of the fact. Thank you anyway.

If you like the Japhy Ryder character then should check out some of Gary Snyder's poems/writings.......he's amazing.

nomadicfollower 01.09.2007 05:03 PM

I've been meaning to read some Gary Snyder after I read a speech he gave on Ethnopoetics, but I haven't been able to find any of his works.

Dead-Air 01.10.2007 12:19 AM

The Boat of a Million Years by Poul Anderson. Not what I expected, it is loosely "science fiction", but it's also historical fiction as it's concerned with immortals in the ancient world. Not gods, but people who just don't die unless somebody actively kills them.

James Blonde 01.11.2007 09:50 AM

James Blonde has almost finished Tatjana Ulitskaya's "Funny funeral" book, rather entertaining but not much else.

hmm the best thing to get would be "the gary snyder reader", i think it's called something like that. it's wonderful, it contains his poetry, translations, journal entries and more. they have it on amazon.

Council worker Roger joined the ASBO unit because new departments are the best places to avoid work. Feeling oddly blank about the death of his father and wanting to escape the office, he goes to investigate a condemned tower block on the notorious Composer's estate. Looking down from the third floor, Roger is mesmerised by the sight of local kids - mostly characters he recognises from the ASBO lists - drinking and fighting in the piazza below. He returns regularly, and even invites his colleague Spence along one night. Spence intentionally leaves his brand new Mercedes unlocked in the piazza, and waits for the fun to start. So the ASBO show is born. Soon Spence is hosting drug-fuelled parties for local dignitaries, celebrities, even hen nights, and Roger fears that his voyeurism has become corporate entertainment. Still, helped along by uppers and downers and his glamorous new girlfriend, he drifts along with it. By the time things get really ugly, it's much too late...

Have you seen the film? It's ace.

Reading Dr Mukti and Other Tales of Woe by Will Self. Pretty good so far.

whorefrost 01.23.2007 10:24 AM

Nope, will have to check it out. I caught the end of Woman in the Dunes at the ATP cinema (damn inaccurate schedule). aim to try and score the DVD of that as well.

Iain 01.23.2007 10:43 AM

It's not quite as good as Woman In the Dunes but I rate that as one of my alltime favourite films. Another good one is Pitfall which I think was also based on an Abe novel. And they were all directed by Hiroshi Teshigahara and all, I think, feature Toru Takemitsu soundtracks. And all are ace.

whorefrost 01.23.2007 12:51 PM

intereshting shtuff, Iain, cheers

I've started Don Telford's 'Party' last night and liked it so much i've nearly finished reading it.

Iain 02.19.2007 05:27 AM

I've pretty much almost read Our Band WIll Be Your Life over the past few days. Can't believe I hadn't read it before...really, really ace book. I still have about half of Against The Day to read as well (the new Pynchon) which is pretty good so far.
