Tue 20th May ATP Presents presents De La Soul Doors - 7:00 PM Tickets - £22.50 Buy Tickets ![]() De La Soul is a Grammy Award-winning hip hop group from Amityville, New York. They are best known for their eclectic sampling and quirky, surreal lyrics, and their contributions to the evolution of the jazz rap subgenre. The members are Kelvin Mercer (Posdnuos, Mercenary, Plug Wonder Why, Plug One), David Jude Jolicoeur (Trugoy the Dove, Dave, Plug Two) and Vincent Mason (P.A. Pasemaster Mase, Maseo, Plug Three). The three formed the group in high school and caught the attention of producer Paul Huston (Prince Paul) with a demo tape of the song "Plug Tunin'". Prince Paul was also sometimes referred to as Plug Four. With its playful wordplay, innovative sampling, and witty skits, the band's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, was hailed as a hip-hop masterpiece. It is also the band's biggest commercial success to date, with their subsequent albums selling progressively less, despite receiving praise from critics. A measure of 3 Feet High and Rising's cross-over appeal was the fact that it was voted Album of the Year by NME Magazine, a title better known for its taste in guitar-based music. De La Soul has influenced numerous other hip hop artists such as Camp Lo, Black Eyed Peas, and Digable Planets. They were also instrumental in the early stages of rapper/actor Mos Def's career, and are a core part of the Spitkicker collective. They are the longest standing Native Tongues Posse group, after the Jungle Brothers. |

Thu 22nd May Meanfiddler presents Einsturzende Neubauten Doors - 7:00 PM Tickets - £16.50 Buy Tickets ![]() In their 27th year, Einstürzende Neubauten again prove the potency of their philo-acoustic long-term therapy. After their successful 2007 tour of the U.K. the mature avant-garde All-Stars present their new album Alles wieder offen, showing their intimacy and fragility in a completely new light. Blixa Bargeld, Alexander Hacke, N.U. Unruh, Rudolf Moser and Jochen Arbeit have triumphed over the old Berliner Mauerkrankheit, the fever has sunk to a normal temperature and the apocalyptic visions and the yearning for death of the early days are now part of the past. Alles Wieder Offen is released Nov. 6th on their own Potomak label, distributed by Ryko in the United States. Today, Einstürzende Neubauten is the first and only band which successfully uses the Internet productively to gather and concentrate activities of their fans from around the world. Einstürzende Neubauten launched their official website www.neubauten.org in 2002, and made it the center of their musical activities. Entire albums are financed by registered Supporters via subscription. The principle is simple: their Supporters buy the next Einstürzende Neubauten album before it's recorded. With this funding in hand the band has time to work in peace rather than wasting time and energy in endless discussions with record companies about marketing and "brand identity" - irksome intrusions into the artistic process! In return Supporters world-wide have exclusive access to Einstürzende Neubauten's internal working processes. Supporters were able to watch the recording sessions via web-cam for the first two "Supporter Albums" (2002/2005) and were also called upon by the band members in direct chat discussions to comment on the working process and influence it. In the same way, the "Musterhaus" series (a collection of experimental albums) is being marketed solely on the website. The untiring exploring spirit is still driven by a hot burning desire. Einstürzende Neubauten are still on the unending quest for the undiscovered Sound and have once again perceptibly redefined their parameters. For every generation its own sickness, and for every generation its own cure. Sometimes the proven household remedies are the most effective. Or so they say. Ticket Line: 0871 230 1093 |

ATP CONCERTS PRESENTS MEAT PUPPETS PLUS SPECIAL GUESTS HOWLIN RAIN Rise to Your Knees is the first album of new material to bear the Meat Puppets name since 2000, and the first in a dozen years to reunite guitarist/singer/main songwriter Curt with his brother, bassist/co-founder Cris Kirkwood, who recently rejoined the band after a lengthy struggle with substance abuse. The 15-song album--the resurgent Meat Puppets' first for the independent Anodyne label--boasts the same visionary fusion of complementary contrasts that originally endeared the band to a large and loyal audience in the 1980s, when they emerged from their hometown of Phoenix, Arizona to redefine the parameters of American indie rock. Rise to Your Knees-- recorded in the band's adopted home base of Austin, Texas -- finds the Kirkwoods and new drummer Ted Marcus tapping into the same adventurous spirit that first put Meat Puppets on the map, recapturing the transcendent highs of their most celebrated work. The resulting music adds an inspired new chapter to the already massive legacy of a band whose body of music is an indispensable cornerstone of contemporary alternative rock. For most of the 1980s, Curt, Cris and original drummer Derrick Bostrom turned out a remarkable run of independent releases, originally released on the SST label, including such acknowledged underground classics as Meat Puppets , Meat Puppets II , Up on the Sun , Mirage , Huevos and Monsters . On those albums, the band applied punk's loud, fast energy and a free-spirited sense of experimentalism to an ever-evolving mix of bluesy hard rock, high-lonesome twang and homespun psychedelia. The threesome delivered its eclectic iconoclasm with an increasingly sophisticated level of instrumental interplay, highlighted by Curt's inventive guitar runs and his and Cris' rough-hewn vocal harmonies. The trio's dynamic interaction was further reflected in their adrenaline-charged live shows, which were prone to induce delirious sonic highs. Meat Puppets exercised a massive influence on more than one generation of like-minded indie combos--including Nirvana, whose fandom ran so deep that they invited them along as opening act on their In Utero tour, and invited the Kirkwoods to share the stage to perform three Meat Puppets numbers on Nirvana's historic 1994 MTV Unplugged special. After nearly a decade of D.I.Y. success, Meat Puppets made a successful transition to major-label status in the first half of the '90s, signing with London Records and releasing Forbidden Places , Too High to Die and No Joke! , making unexpected inroads into the rock mainstream and even achieving a surprise hit with "Backwater." The band went on hiatus for the remainder of the '90s, and Curt eventually reemerged leading a completely new, Austin-based four-man Meat Puppets lineup for 2000's Golden Lies . He then formed Eyes Adrift with Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic and Sublime drummer Bud Gaugh; that outfit released one self-titled album in 2002. Kirkwood then spent an extended stint touring as an acoustic solo act, releasing the stripped-down album Snow under his own name in 2005, before feeling the urge to reactivate Meat Puppets. "I never broke the band up," asserts Kirkwood. "I never said, 'There's no more Meat Puppets.' I drove thousands and thousands of miles doing solo stuff, and I had a blast doing that, but nobody was watching out for my ass except me. After four or five years of that, I'd had enough and was ready to play electric. And then some trusted friends in Phoenix said that Cris was rehabilitated, so I called him up and he seemed ready." New drummer Ted Marcus arrived in an appropriately organic fashion, initially entering the band's orbit while working as soundman on a new Meat Puppets documentary, which had been shooting during the early stages on Rise to Your Knees ' birth cycle. "After a few days of tracking, everybody was like, 'Sonofabitch, this is amazing,'" recalls Curt. Having made self-produced low-budget indie records and expensive major-label albums with big-name producers, Kirkwood has a pretty clear idea of which approach works best for his band, whose music has always been rooted in spontaneity and inspiration. "In the '80s, we used to just crap this stuff out," he notes. "Those SST records cost, like, five grand apiece, if that much, and those are the records that made people like us. Later, when we got into a position to work in bigger studios with outside people, we'd wind up spending a whole bunch of money and having to satisfy the people who gave us that money. We did that all through the '90s, and I'm just not interested in doing that anymore. "Now, if I can get away with it, I'll make a record as cheap as I can and put as little work as I can into it, which is what we did with this one. I don't like putting a lot time into it. We cut a track, and If we've played it halfway right, we're done with it." With Rise to Your Knees already the subject of a rapturous groundswell among longtime fans, the reborn Meat Puppets' sense of musical mission is as strong as ever. "I think this is the most dynamic version of the band ever, and so far the love coming from the audience has been really, really great," he notes, adding, "We started when Reagan was in, and I think it's a similar time now. It feels medieval . It feels like the world is a fuckin' pile of shit that's full of snakes and flies, and we're here to put some frosting on it." Resonance104.4fm is proud to present a unique concert of new music
featuring Australia's foremost improviser JON ROSE Friday 11th April 2008, St Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, Kings Cross. Doors open at 8pm and concert starts at 8.30pm. Entrance £8 and £5 concs. There will be a bar. This is a unique (for British audiences probably the very last) opportunity to hear the music of Jon Rose and two of his own very favourite acoustic settings: The Kryonics Jon Rose, violins (including the Stroh cello); Aleks Kolkowski, violin (including the Stroh violin); Joe Williamson, contrabass violin + Temperament Jon Rose, violins; Veryan Weston, resident Brindley & Foster wind organ with tracker action At last audiences in London can find out what this euro-star-music is all about as the wind organ at the oldest church in Britain - St. Pancras, London (founded 314 AD) - has been confirmed for a Weston-Rose concert on 11th April with Aleks Kolkowski's Kryonics Stroh Violin project on the same bill. Not since the gothic horror of H P Lovecraft in his 'Music of Erich Zahn' has the art of music offered such an evening of candlelit weirdness and intrigue. The combination of Tenor violin, half stopped organ, Stroh violin, bass violin, and bowed saw will set the spine erect and tingling. The setting? None other than London's home of spook - St Pancras Old Church. Equipped with the notable stiffs of Johann Christian Bach, Mary Shelley, and Thomas Hardy to name but a few, the graveyard offers little comfort for those who would entertain an evening on the hard pew contemplating mortality and the ancient and modern of music. The crow awaits you at the door. Dress code: Black. Makeup: Black. |

BABA YAGA’S HUT Nothing is as it seems……… SUNDAY 4TH MAY 2008 LYDIA LUNCH HTRK + GUESTS Corsica Studios presents a special musical-visual performance featuring Lydia Lunch, James Johnston and Ian White in celebration of the launch of Lydia’s new book The Gun is Loaded forthcoming from Black Dog Publishing London UK. The Gun is Loaded is the first volume of its kind to document Lydia’s visual art. Spanning nearly two decades of work within its 250 pages, it includes images from her portrait series of street urchins in New Orleans; her investigations into the haunted ruins of Pennsylvania and West Virginia; her intimate portraits of murderous lovers and her most recent self-portraits and photomontages. Infused with her apocalyptic vision of America’s spiritual collapse and the brooding sexuality which has marked much of her work, The Gun is Loaded is rich in visuals and text, demonstrating Lydia’s continued presence at the autopsy of American society and the forefront of its vital underground culture. To mark the release of this landmark work, Lydia will present material from her new cd - The Ghost of Spain, a psychoambient musical journey through the troubled history of the country she now calls home. The enduring themes of fractured memory, sex, sorrow, rage and war will be illuminated by James Johnston and Ian White. James, the founder and multi-instrumental force behind Gallon Drunk, and percussionist Ian White are past masters at musical mood manipulation and the perfect mediums for Lydia's deeply affecting Spanish séance. Seasoned collaborators, Lydia recently contributed vocals to the track Doughboy on Gallon Drunk's limited edition 7-inch vinyl release of their blistering single Grand Union Canal. Performing live together, the incendiary dynamic between the Drunk boys' musicianship and Lydia's muse promises an aural conflagration. Photographs from The Gun is Loaded will be projected throughout the evening, creating a provocative atmosphere of seductive and haunting images, inviting the voyeur into the private dreams, desires and obsessions of one of America’s most fearless daughters. The Gun is Loaded will be available for purchase on the night of the show. http://www.lydia-lunch.org HTRK http://www.myspace.com/htrk HTRK (formed 2003) are a mysterious three-piece from Melbourne who reside in Berlin and London. Inspired by the sounds and images of David Lynch, The Birthday Party and electronic artist Pita, HTRK effortlessly create music of sublime tension and beauty. Heavily processed and bathed in reverb, was after 'Nostalgia' that Birthday Party guitarist Rowland S. Howard became interested in HTRK, eventually going on to produce their forthcoming debut album 'Marry Me Tonight', which will be released later this year. -- £7 Adv. JAPANESE NEW MUSIC FESTIVAL 2008
2 musicians play 4 different units SUNDAY 27TH APRIL In 1997,1999, 2003, 2005 and 2006 a set of performances aroused a storm of frenzy and shriek in Europe, USA, China, Mexico... and they will be back with even greater power in Europe. This time 3 musicians (YoshidaTatsuya and Kawabata Makoto) form 7 units!! A cappella, comic free form, progressive core, troubadour, cosmic psychedelic...... You'll be experiencing the essence of all kinds of extremes in the current new music scene in Japan on a single night. ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR AKATEN (Kawabata/Yoshida) RUINS ALONE (Yoshida Tatsuya solo) KAWABATA MAKOTO (solo) ACID MOTHERS TEMPLE SWR (Kawabata/Yoshida) Acid Mothers Temple have rapidly become acclaimed as the greatest, most extreme trip psychedelic group in the world. Releases have appeared on labels around the world at an amazing pace, and the magnificence of their live performances is already being whispered of as legendary. SWR is the AMT Family's most powerful battle-formation yet. featuring Tsuyama and Kawabata from the original AMT and Yoshida from Ruins. their crushingly acute freakout sound will pulverize the world's legions of wannabe psych groups. KAWABATA MAKOTO solo Kawabata Makoto is best known for his speed-demon noise-fuzz guitar in Acid Mothers Temple, but he is also widely active as an unparalleled drone guitarist. Drawing upon a huge reservoir of original techniques including metal glissando and bow-work that can summon up the sound of a string ensemble or orchestra, his work in this area cannot be simply categorized as minimal, drone or experimental. You'll find it hard to believe that a single guitar can create sonic worlds of such meditative and elegant depth. RUINS ALONE (Yoshida Tatsuya solo) Yoshida is one of the most innovative drummer/composer/improviser in Japan's new music scene. pioneer of Drum & Bass duo RUINS was founded by Yoshida in '85 . Tunes are complicated and mysterious, and songs are sung in the language of their own invention. It's high-tension, wild, heavy, speedy, acute, and powerful tremendous ensemble never sounds like they are only two players. now RUINS had no bassist and currently he has been playing as RUINS ALONE. playing RUINS songs with sampling bass. AKATEN (Kawabata/Yoshida) Formed in 1995 with the motto of "irresponsibleness" and "perfunctoriness." They easily free themselves from the spell of the traditional seriousness of the art. Using daily commodities like scissors, toothbrush, zipper, camera, and plastic bottle as percussions, and shouting their brand names over and over as the "songs," the show is performed under the concept of low cost and maximum sound effect. AKATEN is the experimental convenience store punk band that provides the sound images of cheap and simple daily lives. -- £8 Adv. 7.30 pm Corsica Studios 4 Elephant Road London SE17 1LB 020 7703 4760 info@corsicastudios.com www.corsicastudios.com http://www.wegottickets.com/event/28008 http://www.acidmothers.com |

Café Oto Listings – June 08
Welcome to our first monthly bulletin. Bellow is a list of events for June. All tickets can be brought via our website www.cafeoto.co.uk. Hope to see you at Café Oto soon. WED 4 JUN • 8PM • £6 - MEG BAIRD + SHARRON KRAUS Over the years Meg has played as part of the Baird Sisters along with her sister Laura, as well as with the Philadelphia psych-folk collective, Espers. Her first solo album, Dear Companion was released in 2007. It features Baird's high, pure vocals and intricately picked guitar, the album conjures up the timeless and universal nature of the best folk music. The songs are deeply rooted in traditional song forms, from age-old British Isles ballads to Appalachian laments, as well as the 60s and 70s singer-songwriter era. Sharron Kraus creates music rooted in the folk traditions of England and Appalachia. Her work is characterized by rich vocals, haunting banjo and fine acoustic guitar. Her live performances are stark, compelling, and delicate. As with her music, her performance continues the tradition of the balladeer bringing tales of terror, sadness and joy. Ticket link - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30505 THUR 5 JUN • 8PM • £5 - THE DUSA ORCHESTRA + THREE BEARDS The Dusa Orchestra is Peter Lenzin (sax), Patrick Kessler (double bass), Enrico Lenzin (drums) and accordion virtuoso Goran Kovacevic. Presenting the art of genre-melting performance that has elements of Alpenmusic, Tango, Balkan, Jazz, Folk and Classical. Ticket link - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30591 FRI 6 JUN • 8PM • £5 – SUZY MANGION + ISNAJ DUI Suzy's songs drift from style to style, but are always unified by her trademark haunting vocals and complex harmonies. Her recent solo album The Other Side Of The Mountain has allowed even more experimentation with her sound and songs, a harmonious noise of electronics old and new mixing with the bricolage of beats, banjos and beat-up Since the debut release in March 2005, Isnaj Dui (real name Katie English) has been busy on the live circuit, provoking much interest from fellow experimental electronica artists for her unique blend of acoustic instruments and electronically manipulated effects. As a classically trained flautist, Katie uses concert and bass flutes alongside an effects and looping device as well as home made instruments including the electrodulcimer, a stringed instrument devised by Katie herself to create a unique and versatile sound. Ticket link – http://www.wegottickets.com/event/29433 SAT 7 JUN • 8PM • £5 – THINGUMA*JIGSAW + DEAD RAT ORCHESTRA Thinguma*jigSaw combine elements of Irish/British/American folk and avant garde music. Following their relocation from their native Norway to Ireland, the duo quickly built up an audience in the Irish underground music scene and have just released their debut album "Awakeinwhitechapel" on the Irish-based psych-folk label Deserted Village. The Dead Rat Orchestra create beautiful music from sketches of guitar, violin and percussion. Ticket link - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30653 SUN 8 JUN • 8PM • £6 - NANCY ELIZABETH + JOHN FAIRHURST Nancy is a Manchester based singer and instrumentalist who mixes folk and post rock influences to make enchanting and dynamic music. Nancy's first album was recorded in a 17 century cottage in rural Wales and a village hall on the outskirts of Manchester and features guitars, harp, dulcimers and harmonium amongst other instruments all alongside her unique voice and harmonies. John Fairhurst plays English guitar folk with shades of Indian classicism. His debut album 'Joys Of Spring' was recorded in his shed, but is very much global in its scope. Different strokes recall Ravi Shankar, John Fahey and Burt Jansch, yet Fairhurst is taking his own distinctive strides. Ticket link - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/30625 MON 9 JUN '08 • 8PM • £5 - FAMILY ELAN + CIAN NUGENT "The Family Elan derive inspiration from devotional and folk music traditions as well as the tanbur playing of the Kurdish Sufi mystic Ostad Elahi and Âshyq songs of the Azerbaijani sâz master Edalat Nasibov, alongside the rawer, more percussive sounds of the Yayla musicians of the Eastern Black Sea region – who fashion reed instruments from young pine saplings - like Hasan Yïldïrïm (who plays the violin like a drum) and Hayri Dev. The music of the Rebetes of early twentieth century Greece is an obvious benchmark, alongside more recent European folk revivalists like the Hungarian band Muzsikás. Other signposts might include the bouzouki inventions of Anne Briggs and the musical tapestries of the Incredible String Band." – Locust Music Cian Nugent is an exploratory guitarist from Dublin whose playing is rooted in pre-war blues, Appalachian string bands and Takoma tradition. Fayey is an obvious reference but Cain is no mere Fahey copyist. He uses the style as a starting point for his compositions and creates something highly personal within these limitations Ticket link - http://www.wegottickets.com/event/31759 THUR 12 JUN • 8PM • £6 - 'A Series of Fortunate Events…' Present EDDIE PREVOST and ANTON LUKOSZEVIEZE. Series curated by David Ryan and Olivier Rodriguez 'A series of Fortunate Events…' brings together two brilliant improvisers with longstanding involvement in the contemporary international scene. Eddie Prévost has been involved in numerous small group contexts as well as being the driving force behind seminal improvising group AMM; Prévost is one of a core of radical innovators who have laid the foundations for European free improvisation. Anton Lukoszevieze has a formidable reputation as a champion of avant-garde and experimental music, and is the director of new music ensemble Apartment House. Respectively these musicians have been affected by elements of the avant-garde, composition, and indeterminacy; but above all, they are each engaged with an attention to sound and the unfolding of sonic particularity in time and space. TUE 17 JUN • 8PM • £3 – Free Improvisation Platform Curated by Adam Bohman: Greg Morgan-Sax and Gave Williams-Drums + Pianos Ghikas-Violin etc and Zachary Von Weizsacker-Cello etc + Chefa Alonso-Soprano Sax and Tony Marsh-Drums TUE 24 JUN '08 • 8PM • £6 - COBA , FINN PETERS, YEE-KING + SPECIAL GUESTS Coba is a Japanese accordionist who has won several international accordion competitions, he has released CDs in Europe and Japan. unluck recs present
JANDEK Jandek touches down in London for only the second time, following up the incredible solo performance from three years ago with a dynamite trio featuring the representative from Corwood Industries, Matt Heyner on bass and Pete Nolan playing drums. Sure to be one of the most furious configurations yet tested under the Jandek banner; expect high-intensity rockers, relentless white-outs and of course the rep’s irrepressible vocal delivery that has darkened his large shadow across the constellation of experimental and outsider music. Matt Heyner and Pete Nolan are no also-rans in those worlds, either, what with Heyner’s rich background as leader of free-form-freaks No Neck Blues Band and member of Cold Bleak Heat, Test and of course previous Jandek outings. Nolan has hit revered heights as sticksman with out-rock noise duo Magik Markers and has also released some essential acid-guitar work under his Spectre Folk mantle. The performance takes place at The Nave; the deconsecrated St Paul's church in Islington, that now operates as a Steiner school and unique arts venue. Sunday June 15th The Nave, 1 St Pauls Road, N1 £12, 8pm; performance starts 8.30pm http://wegottickets.com/event/29892 then the next day... unluck recs and PAN present Monday June 16th FLOWER-CORSANO-HEYNER TRIO The much-heralded duo of Mick Flower (Vibracathedral Orchestra, Sunroof!, Sunburned Hand of the Man, etc) on Japan Banjo and Chris Corsano (Flaherty-Corsano, Vampire Belt, Bjork, etc) behind the drums. Burning, ecstatic rhythms and kinetic drones. NYC double bass freak and NNCK guru Matt Heyner joins them for this performance. SPECTRE FIRE TRIO Spectre Fire Trio is the union of drummer Pete Nolan (Magik Markers, GHQ, Spectre Folk), Manchester tenor sax player Ray Dickaty (Solar Fire Trio, Spiritualized) and free-jazz supremo John Edwards on double bass. A sweaty prospect - come prepared. MV CARBON / SARAH'S CHARITY COLLAB MV Carbon from female NYC wronguns Metalux (seek out their great split release with Smegma and Carlos Giffoni) and Skullflower / Family Underground collaborator Sarah's Charity join forces for this special show Café Oto, Ashwin Street, Dalston £7, 7pm (early entry encouraged) http://wegottickets.com/event/31328 |

ALAN WILKINSON / JOHN EDWARDS / STEVE NOBLE TRIO (BO’WEAVIL) Fierce, graceful and ecstatic sax/bass/drums trio. PHIL MINTON Feral vocal improviser admonishes the notion of 'song' with impure muezzin wails and chunnering barks. Monday 14 July, 2008 OREN AMBARCHI Helm + tbc The Luminaire, 311 High Road, Kilburn, London, NW6 7JR Doors 8.00pm // £7adv/ £8 door http://www.wegottickets.com/event/31889 Oren Ambarchi http://www.orenambarchi.com/ Oren Ambarchi is a composer and multi-instrumentalist with longstanding interests in transcending conventional instrumental approaches. His work focuses mainly on the exploration of the guitar, "re-routing the instrument into a zone of alien abstraction where it’s no longer easily identifiable as itself. Instead, it’s a laboratory for extended sonic investigation". (The Wire, UK). Ambarchi's work on harmonics and resonance has led him to define serene spaces of fluid, shifting sound that is both fragile and extremely physical. He has performed and recorded with a diverse array of artists such as Martin Ng (Australia), Sunn 0)) (USA), Christian Fennesz (Austria), Otomo Yoshihide (Japan), Pimmon (Australia), Keiji Haino (Japan), John Zorn (USA), Rizili (Greece), Voice Crack (Switzerland), Sachiko M (Japan), Keith Rowe (UK), Phill Niblock (USA), Gunter Muller (Switzerland), Evan Parker (UK), Robbie Avenaim (Australia), Toshimaru Nakamura (Japan), Dave Grohl (USA), Damo Suzuki (Japan), Chris Townend (Australia) and many more.
