Adam, you definitely need to see Stroszek next. It's certainly a classic and the ending is simply spectacular.

...huh? The last episode is amazing!!! What a perfect ending. My favorite episode, I believe it's called "Pierret Le Fou", where Spike takes on that clown guy at the amusement park. Strangely, it was the first one I saw, and I thought I was going to be in for this really dark series like Serial Experiments Lain type shit, but the rest of the series.. well, most of it.. ended up being pretty light.

Also, I loved the movie, I actually saw it in theaters here. I'd probably take the movie over almost any episode, except the music in it sucks.

One of the best anime series ever.

.......................

Though Evangelion will always be the one to me.

al shabbray 02.05.2009 05:33 AM

I need to watch the anime. but the movie was the only thing the videotheke had at the moment.
I ve started with samurai champloo and loved it. I needed something to stuff the whole it eft behind :)
hope they will release a samurai champloo movie too, would be awesome

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 05:38 AM

I bought Bebop about 6 years ago off of ebay for $20 for the whole series. It was almost obviously a bootleg but it had the best packaging I've ever seen on anything I've ever bought in my LIFE, so uh.. I dunno. All the discs had the episodes in perfect quality, no shitty subtitles, with tons of special features. Then, I got on Amazon and saw the same set going for like $90. So either I was just lucky or this was the greatest bootleg EVER.

....Regardless, I'd reccomend just buying the whole series if you can, you won't be sorry.

secretary

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 09:09 AM

secretary rules. Maggie Gylennhaal with a carrot in her mouth and a horse saddle on her back is... hot.

noisereductions 02.05.2009 09:19 AM

Maggie is great.

I d/l'd the bootleg a while back. I haven't gotten through the whole thing, but it is great. I'm not even big on anime, but the style and music on CB is fantastic.

noisereductions 02.05.2009 10:36 AM

I never get sick of this one. It's funny to me everytime.

Herzog's documentaries are also worth checking out. Land of Silence and Darkness, Little Dieter Needs to Fly, Fata Morgana.

5/10

I've been waiting and waiting to see this movie because I love everything Anderson, and I don't know why I kept putting it off. I finally watched it last night, and I've got to say, it was so-so. Even though I enjoy Indian culture and movies based around it, I didn't feel like it melded well with Anderson's style. It would go from sitar music straight into Anderson's typical Paul-Simon-esque soundtrack in an instant, and this didn't work too well for me. His charactors were standard Wes Anderson charactors as well, seemingly lifted straight out of the Glass family in Franny and Zooey, but this time I didn't feel any depth to them. It almost felt like somebody else was attempting to make a Wes Anderson film.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 02.05.2009 12:29 PM

My cousin has the entire CB series on DVD, maybe the same "bootlegs". I remember watching a fair amount of the discs with him, but I never got to finish the series. Bebop was pretty damn entertaining, and this is coming from someone who isn't much of an anime kind of guy.

Rob Instigator 02.05.2009 12:31 PM

Luke Wilson did not help wes anderson write this movie. he brings something deeper to the connections that wes makes in his sfcripts. I thought darjeeling was a 6/10, but it would have been much better had Luke participated.

afterthefact 02.05.2009 12:34 PM

Ah, I remember noticing that in the credits, but I didn't make that connection. Luke is much deeper than Owen, that is for sure, and his lack of presence is probably, as you say, the main reason this movie feels so shallow and superficial.

noisereductions 02.05.2009 12:39 PM

I thought Darjeeling was a 7/10. Much better than Life Aquatic.

afterthefact 02.05.2009 12:40 PM

Ooooh, no, I have to disagree. Life Aquatic was fantastic. I can see how a fan of the standard Anderson may not like it though. It felt like Anderson had Michel Gondry assist him, but I love it.

Rob Instigator 02.05.2009 01:01 PM

Life aquatic gets better and better everytime I see it.
I give it a 9/10.

noisereductions 02.05.2009 01:44 PM

I only liked the 2nd half of Life Aquatic. Or I guess you could say it was an OK film with an incredible ending. Just didnt seem as consistent beginning-end as most Anderson films. I mean style-wise, whatever. I love Gondry's films as well, so whatever. But yeah. I just was sort of bored, or not thrilled with most of the expedition. But like I said, the climax was stunning.

afterthefact 02.05.2009 01:48 PM

I'm a big fan of Bill Murray as well, especially under the direction of Anderson, so I think that is why Darjeeling let me down a little, and why I loved Life Aquatic as much as I did. Not to say that this is my standard of his films of course; I love Bottle Rocket. But Darjeeling teased us with a small cameo by Murray, and I would rather not be teased I suppose :)

nancykitten 02.05.2009 01:56 PM

Today I watched Akira Kurosawa's Throne of Blood. It's his adaptation of Macbeth. It is rather fucking great. It's darker than a pit of coal.

Toshiro Mifune is spectacular in the lead role. He has a saucer-eyed air of restless insanity that is highly reminiscent of Klaus Kinski.

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 03:15 PM

I re-watched Survive Style 5+. Me., have you seen this? You'd love it!

I ordered a copy of ebay. Because of music issues, it'll likely never come out in a lot of places.

Anyone that's interested but doesn't want to order it, you can find the whole thing on googlevideo last I checked.

Is it just me or is Tadanobu Asano the best actor in the world?! Jesus. He's in so many fucking great films.. this film, Mongol, Screwed, Ichi, Gemini, Vital, Eli Eli, Party 7, Taste of Tea, Last Life in the Universe, Bright Future, Sharkskin Man, Funky Forest, Electric Dragon 80000V, Zatoichi, Love and Pop, and more I'm forgetting. Jesus!

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 05:33 PM

I love Sharkskin Man! It's got a lot of regulars from Takeshi Kitano's movies. Really awesome.

GeneticKiss 02.05.2009 05:44 PM

Just saw it on HBO On Demand last night. Very powerful film that definitely brings you into its world-which isn't all that implausible in concept. 9.5/10

atsonicpark: Regarding the last episode of Cowboy Bebop, I've always felt it was rather pessimistic...the characters basically lose eveything, and then the main character dies after finally getting his revenge? Sorry, I don't like that. I will admit it was the first "not-so-happy" ending I had ever seen, so that may have tainted it...

But, I can certainly agree with you about Evangelion...

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 05:47 PM

Evangelion has the most pessimistic ending ever though!

Anyway, Spike's whole reason for living was to get revenge on Vicious, and he did, so what else was there to do? He had nothing else to do. It was a great ending, though admittingly it was rather dark compared to most episodes in the series...

mangajunky 02.05.2009 05:56 PM

I liked everything about Bebop - especially the ending. Those guys were obviously really big John Woo fans.

Evangelion is brilliant - although I haven't seen the newest stuff.
The last two episodes paired with the movies are just awesome.

My favorite anime series is easily Escaflowne. It's the perfect mix of action and romance.

Lain - although it has a very dark feel and beginning is, as a whole, a very upbeat series.

gmku 02.05.2009 05:57 PM

Georgy Girl is on later tonight. I've never seen it but have always wanted to for some reason. Anybody familiar with it?

Rob Instigator 02.05.2009 06:10 PM

I miss CHE'. spending 4 hours with him made me miss him when the movie ended.

atsonicpark 02.05.2009 06:12 PM

Just bought INVISIBLE WAVES and EUREKA. Can't wait to watch 'em!!

Yeah, cemetary man rules!!

nicfit 02.06.2009 03:34 AM

aaah! Great, nice movie.
I'd say it's similar to mr.Vengeance, less "poetic" and weird, but with a similar "effect".

Florya 02.06.2009 03:57 AM

Watched 'Come and See' again last night.

IMHO one of the best war movies ever made.
