i love the pace of solaris-- it's absolutely delicious. if it was faster it would kill the haunting mood and it would become a star trek episode. i don't know what sodherberg did with his remake, probably something like that, which is why i haven't seen it-- plus the gumption of redoing tarkovsky, ha ha, sorry sodherberg but you're no tarkovsky.

anyway, you blasphemers :p

Rob Instigator 02.13.2009 11:48 AM

Solaris is great.

I actually was more engrossed in the first hour than the later parts!

krastian 02.13.2009 03:13 PM

I liked it....some good footage of Monk and his band on tour. The music was obviously great too.

Rob Instigator 02.13.2009 03:24 PM

straight no chaser is a good doc.

I've seen that remake and, in all sincerity, it really isn't bad. I actually quite admire Soderbergh for doing it (in much the same way that I do Van Sant for his version of Psycho). The easy option would be to simply stick the originals on the shelf marked 'Classic - DO NOT TOUCH!'. I don't for a minute think either Soderbergh or Van Sant thought they were the respective equals of Tarkovsky or Hitchcock. I think both remakes were done more in the spirit of, 'I wonder what would happen if ...' rather than, 'I can do better than ...'

MellySingsDoom 02.13.2009 03:32 PM

Talking of Tarkovsky, some flid who writes for the Guardian claims to have seen "Stalker" more times than he's had hot dinners/masturbated/lied about writing for Sight And Sound in order to get laid, and I was hugely amused by the fact that he seems to have missed the entire goddamn point of the film. Ha!

atsonicpark 02.13.2009 04:04 PM

I've only seen it once. I'd like to see it that many times though!!

afterthefact 02.13.2009 04:34 PM

I'll elaborate more when I have the time, but for now let it suffice to say that I LOVED it.

pokkeherrie 02.14.2009 11:16 AM

Yeah, that Jodorowsky box set is pretty great and decently priced at the moment. I got it last month for about €30. I haven't watched all of it yet though.

I loved that one, watched it in the cinema last year at a film festival while being really sleep deprived. It gave me a few freights, mainly because the sound (of the screaming etc) was so unbelievably loud. But even without that I thought the last 10 minutes (when they are up in the attic) were genuinely scary... brrr.

Solyaris is great. I don't have a problem with the pace of the average Tarkovsky film, but I can imagine it doesn't suit everyone's tastes.

nicfit 02.14.2009 11:53 AM

rec is really nice (I didn't like the ending, but that's not bad for lots of other people). One of the few nice "horrors" I watched lately.
They did a remake, "Quarantine" methinks. Remake sucks, except for The Ring.

pokkeherrie 02.14.2009 12:03 PM

*SPOILER*

yeah, the ending could've been more spookier when, say, the batteries of the camera just ran out and we'd never get to see what happens. just imagine it, her, all alone, in a completely dark room with that... thing.

/*SPOILER*

i heard about the remake, even watched the trailer. looked pretty lame. but the worst thing about it is that the original spanish movie didn't even get released in the US until after the remake.

nicfit 02.14.2009 12:08 PM

Yeah, basically.
I watched "The orphanage" the other day, which had the potential to deliver a couple of different endings : a TOTALLY FUCKIN DISTURBING ONE (which was the one I kinda hoped for, and I "imagined" it in a way that could totally fit in in the script) and a "too happy one" which I totally didn't want.

the director went for a more open thing, sort of a mix of the 2 "ways", which gives you a couple things to think about (which are quite "simple" to figure out, actually, if you paid attention), but emotionally it's not exceptional.
Still, a great flick.
Along with "Rec" and "them" among my fav in the genre.

pokkeherrie 02.14.2009 12:19 PM

Haven't seen the Orphanage or Them, but I heard good things about the first, so I'll definitely keep them in mind.
