(not sure if this is relevant or irrelevant but the irrelevant thread is inaccessible, so that's why it's relevant)

will be traveling to the US for work, to Maryland to be exact, by the end of July. Was thinking about staying longer for a week or so for a holiday, and visit my family that live in Connecticut nowadays. But it turns out that at the same time that I'm there they will be celebrating their holiday over here in Europe.
So now I'm not sure anymore what to do. Could go to DC or New York or something, but not really looking forward to hectic environments ...
Kind of broke to as well, spend a lot of money on the new kitchen :)

nyc is a zoo and prices are nuts and it's hectic. but if in md i could recommend some quieter places

dc is mostly a sleepy town, especially in the summer. yes, the capitol area will be full of tourists in the summer, but they rarely venture any further, and you could enjoy the regular parts of the town, which are walkable/bikeable and (to me) delicious. also decent public transportation. and maybe you catch a show

baltimore is way cheaper and i've spent a couple of very pleasant summers there. some high crime areas, but it's not all "the wire". some great seafood markets and places to eat, music venues, etc

for proper summer relaxation head to annapolis and the eastern shore, which is all the cheasapeake bay. also the actual coast, on the atlantic. ocean city is a big tarted up place, but assateague island is a nice little wild beach with feral ponies and stuff. if you go, the state park is the quiet area; the national park has more campers etc

beaches will be jampacked in the weekends so definitely avoid. but weekdays, while still crowded, will be more manageable. ont the road there there are farms, fruit and pie stands, outlet shops, etc. delaware is also accessible ("delmarva" peninsula is a thing) and you can catch a ferry to cape may nj, which is the nice old timey part of the otherwise trashy (lol) jersey shore

what else... if heading inland instead you could hike to the source of the potomac river--quite a trip! halfway there it's harpers ferry wv, a tourist trap for civil war lovers

the dc museums are all free btw, if you want art or history or sciency stuff at low cost. but again the mall will be packed with tourists, lmao. still, free is free...

there is an interview with the maryland governor on bloomberg where he tsls with david rubenstein about md has "world class" experiences all within 2 hours... lml... https://www.bloomberg.com/news/video...es-moore-video -- this is not an "arts and leisure" interview though but it's what i consume these days and so... oh! you could watch a boring baseball game and drink overpriced watery beer as well at camden yards. also! https://wikitravel.org/en/The_Wire_Tour. (but sure to offer some dangers, lol. would not go there alone)

not sure if you'll be driving (you need to drive to the beach etc) but there is commuter train service between dc and baltimore, plus regular train (and buses) to philly and nyc (philly another option that will be priced cheaper than new york)
