Home secretary John Reid said yesterday that if the airliners being targeted by the alleged bombers had indeed been blown up, there would have been loss of lives on an "unprecedented scale". How insensitive is that to the families of those who have died in wars etc?

Moves are afoot to force people driving big fuel-eating cars to pay extra tax. But by buying a (taxed) more expensive car and paying for more (taxed) petrol, are they forking out enough extra tax already?
