I'm not of fan of hers, but that's a great CD cover.

gmku 08.18.2006 08:59 AM

It's totally unlike her previous stuff up until this. None of that bland "As Tears Go By" stuff. This is a dark, cool masterpiece.

gmku 08.18.2006 11:43 AM

So my replacement copy comes with two stickers on the front. A circular transparent "Promotional Copy Not for Sale" and a white tab declaring "Contains Language Unsuitable for Some Listeners." And on the back, some jerk has, in INK no less, written in block letters nex to "Why'd Ya Do It" the word "NO." That song has the profanity, but jesus, why do people mark up their records. I can understand the stickers, but to WRITE on the cover?!!

All I can figure is it must have been a radio station copy and the manager wanted to make sure no DJ played the dirty song.

Should I try removing the stickers or just leave them? The vinyl sounds hardly played, by the way.

atari 2600 08.18.2006 10:41 PM

It was probably a college radio station's copy & someone wrote "NO" next to that song to prevent it from being played by someone that didn't realize that it violates FCC rules.

oops, now I read your whole post.

acousticrock87 08.18.2006 10:55 PM

I hate that. Cut outs are usually about the best deal you can get, but not when they're written on. That blows.

bought daydream nation again cause i can't find it!

Iain 08.20.2006 06:15 AM

Bought these:

The top one is Brazil Classics 1 with stuff like Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Gilberto Gil et al....

And, yes, I got Funhouse because up to now I only had a burned copy of it. Pretty bad form eh?

And I reckon that Terry Riley record has one of the most subtly sinister covers in music history.

Fortunately I found another copy the next day that's almost perfect--immaculate cover, even looks better printed than my original, with deeper inks and reproduction overall. Even came with one of those fancy Japanese audiophile inner sleeves. Strangely, the vinyl on the DJ copy sounds a little better than the cleaner looking copy.

How much do you earn gmku? You seem to buy a record every day.Do you rob banks?

I hate when that happens--as it did recently with my copy of Broken English. I think that was just a leftover from the days my daughter and her friends used to ransack my collection, and I just didn't notice until now. Which is also why I now keep everything locked up in a closet. It's taken me about 3 years to replace the many CDs and the few LPs that walked out of my house. I replaced almost every misisng CD with vinyl.

*Edit. I'm thinking what I earn or how I earn it is between me and the IRS. I have made it my raison d'arte to keep the local record store around the corner solvent. I think that's a noble ambition.

How much do you make? And how do you like to spend your money? :)

Keiji Haino - Reveal'd To None As Yet-An Expedience To Utterly Vanish Consciousness While Still Alive, Live at Super Deluxe, April 7, 2005

There've been two copies sitting at the record store for quite a while. Finally decided to spend the $25 on it.

TheDom 08.22.2006 08:01 PM

I just bought a couple of records that my friend got from his dad:

Grateful Dead - Anthem Of The Sun
Grateful Dead - Grateful Dead (Skull & Roses)
Grateful Dead - Steal Your Face
Grateful Dead - Terrapin Station
Grateful Dead - Skeletons From The Closet: The Very Best Of The Grateful Dead.

and the LPs sound really good too.

yeah, one that gets overlooked, but I think it's stunning. Found a great replacement copy, by the way.

I haven't bought an LP for a while, but today I was lucky enough to find five old vinyl EPs in Hairy Records in Liverpool:

Four by Gaye Bykers on Acid (a perennial favouite): Janice Long Session, Nosedive EP, Git Down (Shake Your Thang), Everything's Groovy

And the one I'm most pleased about: Frankfurter's (The Stupid's side-project) only recording, 'Eat EP'. Eight tracks of fun genius.

You lucky lucky bastard! I used to have both those, and loved them.

Hip Priest 08.23.2006 10:32 AM

The Frankfurter's Ep is something I've genuinely sought out over the years with no success - whenever I go into a vinyl shop I try to recall all the stuff Peel used to play! It's still got the cartoon lyric sheet thing too. Cost me six quid mind, so it should have.

I remember John Peel playing 'Hot Babes' and 'Inbred Zombies', so I was a bit chuffed about finding it. I think they did a Peel session with a song called 'We're Gonna Eat John Peel' - I'd love to have that too!

If you're keen, and want the EP put onto tape, just PM me. It'd be a pleasure.

I think I still have the Frankfurter EP. I also had the first 3 or 4 Stupids LP's but I can't remember what I've sold and what I haven't.

Hip Priest 08.25.2006 07:56 AM

I've only got the 'Peruvian Vacation' LP. Wanna swap a Stupids mixtape for a Gaye Bykers on Acid mixtape?

against_the_grain 08.26.2006 11:59 AM

The Flaming Lips....At war with the mystics.

Upon first listening I didn't like the first tune...but the rest blew me away !! I love it.

I saw them in the early 90s with the Butthole Surfers and Stone Temple Pilots, but at the time I was meandering around and didn't give them the listen I should've.....I regret that.

Yes we were. I've got the 7" somewhere still, but as I've got nothing to play it on, if I find it I'll just have to stare at it.
