better question: as someone who doesn't really appreciate that side of rap much if at all, how significantly does the innate absurdity of someone like chief keef and his music play into your appreciation of it??

you probably listened to the wrong Chief Keef song then.

2012 was his peak, Back From The Dead is seriously one of my fav tapes from the last few years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qLo-Lw6idVU

even Keef himself admitted his 2013 material was terrible ("My last two mixtapes were mistakes," Keef confessed. "I was on promethazine, all drugged out. I was tweaking. I don't sip the lean no more though").

2014 has been hit or miss so far. he's really weird now and sometimes it actually works for him:

new 50 Cent album is pretty meh. I kind of liked "Don't Worry About It" and a couple others. But a lot of auto-pilot sameness.

yeah, at first i was looking forward to it. "The Funeral" was probably his best song in years. but then i've heard some songs from the album on youtube and decided to move on. lol.

noisereductions 06.03.2014 08:49 PM

listen to the whole thing once it's not bad just not memorable

Severian 06.04.2014 06:22 AM

Shit, this is just plain the real motherfuckin deal right here.

I"m not gonna lie; I started bumping this because the cover caught my attention when it first came out. I played it and liked it but didn't listen hard enough to notice how excellent a song Young O.G. is. Album qualty... single quality, even. It's just got such a great flow.

Are the other soul tapes any good?

WHERE THE MOTHERFUCKING SHIT IS THA CARTER V?!??! UHN!

Shit is real. I think it might be (Gasp) the best hip hop album of the year, next to Freddie And Madlib, maybe... And that Fabulous Fabolous Soul Tape III.

But this album has totally caught me off guard. I bought it on a whim. On a "fuck it I want something material because I'm depressed and empty" and it's got my brain feeling addicted already.

Wait wait... SORRY but Talib Kweli's Gravitas is still the best of the year, and nobody's touched his ass. His totally unpublicized free beginning of the year album still holds up.

but IGGY is a star.

---

Apart from the names mentioned above, I'm FUCKING PISSED at this year's hip hop output. What the hell? Even the good albums turn out to be disappointments. Shit, I was so hungry for hip hop that I praised Oxymoron, which is a marginally acceptable effort at best.

WHERE'S YEEZY?
Where's Weezy?
And Where's the mother fuckin Wu Tang Clan??

Shit on it!

noisereductions 06.09.2014 03:06 PM

Sev im so glad you got that too. I know it sounds crazy but so far i kind of feel like it pron is the best hip hop album of the year. So so good.

noisereductions 06.09.2014 08:18 PM

"Rolex" is my shiz on there.

noisereductions 06.09.2014 08:56 PM

also the Rick Ross has grown on me big time. Genius album. I love all the old 90's hip hop throwback shit in there. "Thug Cry" is beyond brilliant.

I don't know. Ross left me a little cold this time around, and I haven't really given him another go. I like the album but more for the collabs than anything.

Seriously that "Maybach music" sample needs to go die in a fire. I am so sick of it.

I don't know if IGGY is THE best, but she's crazily, surprisingly good. And kinda hot but also not, in that Nikki Minaj big thighs and cheekbones kind of way. Both artists make me feel like I'm trying not to be attracted to their voices, and gangs always a losing battle.

On one hand I wish IGGY had gone harder on the production for more of the tracks, but I'm really not at all disappointed that it sounds exactly like it does. She's got an attitude on her too - check the Xxl freshman class interview - hah! And I don't hear that "trying to sound like I'm not trying to sound black" thing from her. I get that from almost all white rappers, and I can't get past it. At least admit you're trying, or you're just being insulting and not paying due credit to your influences.

Sigh.

I'm seeing propaganda for Carter V, and some whack updates about the new Kanye, but I'm still feeling ripped off. "Believe Me" is more Drake than Wayne, and to be perfectly fucking honest I am tired of that guy! He's not great, looks and dresses goofy, isn't clever, and has one of those heads you just want to huck a spit wad at. Seriously, he is not (NOT NOT NOT) great enough to be this big, or to think so highly of himself. Everything he does, someone's done before. The dreampop r&b on his last album? Uhhh Prince, Kanye, Frank Ocean... Everything else he's done? Uhhh... Jay Z, Kanye, Kanye, Jay Z.

We need to get real about Drake. The world needs to get real about Drake and Drake needs to fucking get real about Drake. He's there for lull between albums by Yeezy, Weezy, Jigga, and the like. He is not one of them, he is a stand in. And a lint roller. And ridiculous. And corny. And, again, not clever.

I like some songs and even whole albums but there's nothing with staying power. Nothing I'll be listening to 10 years from now, as I do with ever Jay Z album from the first run.

Makes it hard to like Canada, really. And I do! You can waltz into any drug store and buy narcotics, and they're not dumbasses about guns even though they use them like crazy because half the place is still hanging in the 19th century. Single layer universal health care and weed and all kinds of ok things. But his faces makes me punch air!

noisereductions 06.10.2014 02:51 PM

I like drake a lot, but i feel we are getting to a saturation point w his material. A break would do some good.

Iggy is way better than Nikki.

yo, is this a new secret Nas project?

sounds just like him but with some weird vocal effect.

personally i don't think it's Nas, probably just a new rapper who impersonates him very well.

biggest mystery since Captain Murphy..? hehe. i guess we're gonna find out soon though.

his voice sounds different, if it's really Nas then i suppose it was pitched.

after a few listens, i can also tell his flow is way too monotonous and some of his bars are generic. i hope it's not him.

speaking of Nas, here's a new verse from him, off Mariah Carey's new album:

Me too honestly. I love it.

Kingdom Come took a minute to grow on me as well, but I think it's a criminally underrated album all things considered. Now I feel the same way about Holy Grail. Yeah he sounds a little bored, but maybe he's trying too hard to sound mature. He'll get it down, and settle into Middle age and learn how to be a domestic dad while still spitting mad verse.

He can't really complain about how mean the streets are, or unfairly being pulled over anymore... I think he should focus on political and social issues. That will bring the fire out in anyone. But as things are he's doing just fine.

We all expect way too much from out favorite musicians sometimes.

Why do you say this? I thought they recently performed a song together. Not sure what, though. And I heard another collaboration album was in the works, but that there was no real evidence that it would necessarily be a WTT sequel.

Kanye isn't in to retreading the same old ground anyway. WTT had a certain theme to it, lyrically and musically. If was triumph over adversity, and reflection on what adversity meant to Ye and Jay. Jay loves sequels, clearly, but WTT 2 would probably have to be a massive jump forward, or at least to the side, from the original for Kanye to have any interest, I'm sure.

Besides, the media has a long history of jumping to radical and inaccurate conclusions about their relationship; ever since Kanye became an artist of roughly the same level of popularity, it's been a go-to topic for desperate rumor mill bloggers with nothing else to write about. Personally I would bet the two have never been quite as close or quite as distant as people want to believe.

Jay said very positive things about Yeezus, and Kanye hasn't said anything negative about Jay as far as I know. But maybe you're right.

I just hope that they're willing to record together, because if Ye is truly making a "Born in the USA" to Yeezus's "Nebraska" then it just wouldn't do to not have a few verses from Jigga on there.

nice song. both Kendrick and Weezy spazzed.

Severian 06.19.2014 04:43 PM

Fantastic Mr Fox dipping into the Yeezy pool with an awesome end result that turns Skit #2 (Late Registration) into a pretty badass beat, which is ultimately worth more than the original skit.

I hate skits. Let me just get that out of the way now. Skits are to blame for it taking 25 years for anyone to think of hip hop as an art form (save for spike lee, and the ninjas who were making the art). But honestly, I'm glad Yeezy dropped them (Chris Rock's "Yeezy taught you well" isn't a skit... It's an essential part of the Blame Game, and it adds to the music rather than serving as a mental "breather" from input processing at that level.

Anyway, Fantastic Mr Fox, everyone!

Fuck in 2001 its like all ANYBODY in LA rap scene was saying. Tupac is alive, he rapping on this mix tape.. For two weeks even I was almost fooled into believing not that he was alive, but that much like the Makaveli bootlegs that some previously unreleased material was coming out posthumously..

To be sure, on that mix-tape Twista is the only rapper uncredited so it added to the mystique, folks were like, "Who the fuck is that?"
