Common gave us a fantastic album and no one cared.
He was one of the last good ones. The new rappers are so garbage. |

Uh. Kendrick. Chance. Pusha. Vince. Danny Brown is the absolute fucking shit. Just completely mad, that guy. Doing interesting things with the genre. And of course Kane. Nas? I dunno. He could use an album like 4:44 at this point. Otherwise it might be game over. |
Quote:
So the only one who still applies out of the rappers you listed is Pusha. These are pretty much the only 4 names who can drop something that would be on par or better than the top 3 albums of the year, which as of now, are in a league of their own. |

I can't quite tell if Frank Ocean should be considered. I've been revisiting Blonde a bit here and there, and every time I play it through it blows me the fuck away. Blonde was really one of the best albums of 2016. Frank's been dropping nice features in its wake. If by some insanely lucky turn of events he ends up releasing a new project this year, I don't doubt it will be incredible. It's really worth noting that Frank is, like, mother. fucking. good. I think there was some discussion of him being overrated when Blonde dropped. I passionately disagree. If anything he's underrated. Blonde was a grower, and a slow-burner, and it took many listens for it to really make sense, but in the end it's, like, twice as good as Channel Orange if not moreso. Frank... Frank is dank. |
Oh, and I also remember reading something about Chance potentially having a new album out soon. I've kinda mellowed on Coloring Book, but I still think Chance is good. Acid Rap still hits all the right notes.

I think it's a different kind of incredible, but yeah. I tend to think of Black Messiah as one of the absolute best albums of this decade, but I might actually like Blonde more. I mean, how FUCKING AMAZING is "Futura Free?" Seriously. I can't believe any of us were calling Frank overrated right after shit like that dropped. Holy fuck. It's hard to imagine an R&B artist striking a chord that would resonate with fans of SY and experimental pop quite as much as that song. The album doesn't have much song to song flow, but Jesus the songs themselves are incredible. And really Fucking heartbreaking. |
louders hip hop café VI
coool. ima be the one of the ones to get educated on hip-hop from my home lol

NR - Have you listened to 4:44 yet?
|
Hey... uhh... echo?
A$AP Mob has a new album out today. Cozy Tapes vol. 2: Too Cozy ![]() |
Louder, I was a little confused at first when you pointed to "Marcy Me" as one of your favorite tracks from 4:44, but I've given that album a veritable fuck ton of play now, and I totally see where you were/are coming from.
It's some of the best shit Jay has dropped lyrically in the second half of his career. At first I thought I i could hear the "gears lurching" (so to speak) when Jay maneuvered some of those weird syllables, but now I'm just really baffled by how excellent the rapping and lyrics are on this track. These are some of the lines I think he's ever written: Quote:
"Y'all flirting with death, I be winkin' through the scope" ... Wow. He's truly one of the best. This single set of lyrics makes every rapper posing as a badass look like an utter pussy by comparison. And it does it with class. Jay came through. I remember why I was such a devotee of his for so long. Behind everything, all the glitz and all the deals and all the stupid videos and bullshit, he's a legitimate master craftsman. HOV. |
Hell yeah man! That track is so so good. Jay is so nice with it, for real bro.

New projects that might be worth discussing:
BROCKHAMPTON - SATURATION 2 A better/more refined version of their debut. It's good. Check it out. Kodak Black - Project Baby 2 Heard one song. So far so good. Kodak's rapping works for me. XXXTENTACION - 17 An emo rap/acoustic project that was co-signed by Kendrick. Has its moments. As a whole I think it's kind of annoying though. Lacks substance and vision. Wiki - No Mountains in Manhattan Wiki kind of repeats what he already did on his mixtape, but this time with a few familiar guests - Ghostface Killah, as well as Kaytranda and Earl behind the boards. Lil Uzi Vert - Luv Is Rage 2 I don't know. Just bores me. I don't get it. I still need to get on that A$AP Mob. -- At last but not at least, I really loved this new Miguel single featuring Travis Scott. ![]() |
Big fat no on Xxxtentaćion. I hate that little fucker. Terrible role model. Baby. Little domestic assault bitchface. I'm sorry but I can't even entertain the idea of giving that amateur porn star (for real... he's a porn star) any attention.
I'm sorry to be a dick, but that guy's trash. What about the new Lil' B? Anyone heard that yet? |

Yeah. I still can't stand that guy though. He's going to a look and claims to laugh at the look (think people who wear Unknown Pleasures shirts). Also, he used WAY too many vague, non-quantifiable flowery adjectives and nouns to fill the space that would normally be reserved for actual information. and it drives me batty. Count how many times he says "dense" or "pulsing" or ... "grooves." Guy can't talk about his own shit without mentioned it's "grooves." He knows zero music theory. I hate him. |

Sometimes the controversy, or real-life issue, is important enough to color the way people process the music. I didn't read the review you're talking about, but that kid is fucked up. I personally don't care what kind of music he's making if he's in the habit of assaulting women and shirking blame. I know I've always said "it's about the music," but sometimes it really shouldn't be. That fucker doesn't need or deserve any idolatry or attention. He needs to take a goddamn break, grow up, and figure out whether he wants to be a positive or negative force in the world before I'm going to entertain the idea of thinking of him as an artist. Kid's famous in part because of his criminal background. It's a dangerous feedback loop I have no intention of encouraging. |
Here, this is something Pitchfork posted from a summary of XXX-heyI'magoddamnfuckingwadofshit's ex-girlfriend's deposition... Even if 75% of this is total horseshit, the guy still needs to go away. You don't get to do any of these things and have your "art" evaluated objectively. Fuck him. He belongs in prison.

He is far from a good artist, either way. His 20 minute "album" was rushed, redundant and gimmicky. |
Quote:
Plus, y'know, the torture, kidnapping and imprisonment, battery, death threats, psychotic paranoia, beating a pregnant woman, and so on. Oh, and home invasion, armed robbery, battery, etc. His album could be fucking Highway 61 Revisited and I still wouldn't give a shit about his music. Pathetic, sickening excuse for a man-boy. |

Glad to hear it. lol. Actually, some of my friends were fawning over him briefly on Facebook a few months ago, so I have definitely heard his stuff before. I remember feeling like there was something dark and Morrissey- or Lana Del Rey-esque about it. Maybe a bit of pop subversion going on, what with the über darkness and whatnot, least in the track I'm thinking of. But in general, I found nothing about it particularly inviting or appealing about it. Sounded pretty basic. Nuts and bolts post-Gucci street hip hop. Nothing special going on. It's insane, but have you noticed there's been a bit of a kickback at Kendrick lately? Like, he got too big and now he has these horses of haters. Anyway, one friend of a friend said something like, "I can't believe people think Kendrick's the best when this kid's out there making real hip-hop." Laughable. I'd rather listen to Kendrick Lamar fart in his sleep or fap it to pictures of my girlfriend than spend a single penny on this little bitchass motherfucker. |
Quote:
He had a stupid fucking line that went "nobody wants death / 'cause nobody wants life to end", which as soon as I noticed, made me feel like deleting the tape and never listening to it again. His fans credit him for being "versatile", but the truth is he just attempts a lot of different genres and he's no more than average at all of them. Yeah that is dumb, Kendrick is still far ahead of his competition. |
Quote:
Well, his fans are high school kids. And a few mislead knuckleheads like my friend's dumb friend. DAMN. is still the hottest goddamn rap album of the year by miles. 4:44 may be more fun, but DAMN. is... Jesus ... harrowing. No contest. And if Kendrick had Hov beat, he certainly had this little whiny goth bitch beat. |
Quote:
Those new artists in general and that includes Lil Uzi and Kodak Black, to be more specific, need to learn a thing or two about quality control. Dividing the amount of tracks on their recent projects by about half would've made them listenable. In 2017, I'm not trying to sit through an album of 16+ songs from any rapper except Kanye and Kendrick. Yep, 4:44 is the most enjoyable, DAMN. is the best. |

I like Uzi better than Yachti, but I still think the scene is dry as fuck. Migos are fools. The best rappers and most inventive artists in the hip-hop genre are all old hats at this point: Kanye, Danny Brown, Kendrick Push, Frank, Hov... but we've been over that. I still think A$AP Rocky has a shot at long term success, but he needs to get inspired or something. ALLA was only half good. The good songs were really good but the meh ones were super meh. I think Young Thug's time is just about over. Which is silly. Rap needs to evolve. The newer scenes and styles aren't very compelling. A wake up call is needed for the younger folks, says I. |
Hell, what am I saying. Even Rocky's old hat at this point. And that most recent Mob tape didn't do much for me. Too bad.
CANNOT WAIT until Pusha drops King Push... 100% Kanye-produced from top to bottom. Kanye and Cudi also have something cooking for Dec. 31. The term "808s 2" has been floated. It'll probably just be a single though. I hope Kanye's ok. |

Young Thug IS the evolution.
Long Live the Thugga |
I feel the same way about the hip hop establishment media insulting the new acts just because they are young, do not give a fuck about past acts, and look different than what they expect a rapper to be like.
the dipshits from Hot 97 treated Lil Yachty like he was fucking Milli Vanilli, like a fucking JOKE, even though he has been putting our great tunes repeatedly, and is just as "juvenile" as any 19-20 year old rapper from the past 35 years. Have these assholes never heard Slick Rick's Lick The Balls????? They don't know history. they want all rappers to act the same, look the same, sound the same. fucking LOSERS all. The exact same type of dismissal shit was being said about Lil Wayne 15 years ago (too weird, too ghetto, too wild, too crass), and about Tribe Called Quest (faggots, hippies, wanna be jazzbos, etc.) 30 years ago. Long Live Lil Boat. |

I know it is not Hip Hop per se, but FUCK I cannot stop listening to Luke James' DRIP. https://youtu.be/zYL3HPMiOho
I played it for some friends of mine (all my age) and they dismissed it instantly with "yeah, ripping off Prince." and I went OFF. No one will say it but I will say it. Prince SUCKED SHIT for the last 25 years. HORRIBLE horrible "music. shit songs. shit lame WEAK funk-lite. horrible horrible horrible. as a musician and performing? genius. as a writer of songs? DONE FELL OFF a quarter century ago. I hate when fuckers try to dismiss young dudes by claiming they ripped off an old great. fucking weak. Prince in the past 25 years could not come up with a song so fucking funky and smooth as DRIP.(I always thought Prince's "funk") was stilted and repetitive in a non-funky way.) |
