I just watched Salo. It was the meh-est meh that ever meh-ed. Except for the first and last 10-15 minutes.

atsonicpark 08.10.2009 09:05 PM

yeah, it's pretty overrated and dull overall, isn't it?

atsonicpark 08.10.2009 09:08 PM

Meh... another mediocore hip hop documentary

GeneticKiss 08.12.2009 11:53 PM

I finally saw the Watchmen movie on Comcast On Demand. I liked it; I'm not sure Zack Snyder's slo-mo-then-sped-up style worked for the action scenes, but it had some great cinematography that closely matched several panels in the book. Also, while the ending wasn't quite the same, it was in the same spirit of the original ending. Some of the original dialogue and sequences were moved around, but at least they were included and where they were placed fit the flow of the movie better. So, 8.5/10.

I also saw the teaser trailer for Tron Legacy. The original, as corny as it was, is a childhood fave of mine and I like how the setting is pretty close to the original even though it's been suitably updated. Daft Punk is reportedly doing the soundtrack as well, so this seems promising.

I also learned that the live-action adaptation of Neon Genesis Evangelion is very close to being greenlit, and Ridley Scott's doing an Alien prequel! Good things are on the horizon...

Oh, you remind me that I have to watch it again because I saw it when it came out in theaters and I fuckin' loved it ! I think it's currently my favorite movie of the year (until Inglourious Basterds eheh). I like it more than The Dark Knight, which is the most overhyped movie of all time IMO.

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 08:11 AM

Re-watched Trailer Town

Giuseppe is god.

nicfit 08.13.2009 08:14 AM

shit

really good, didn't like much the last 15mins.

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 08:15 AM

My friend let me borrow Hooper but it was terrible. Burt Reynolds sucks.

al shabbray 08.13.2009 08:16 AM

I saw gran torino a few days ago, too.
I t was really really cool I think, but I agree the last 15 minutes were too cheesy if you compare it to the rest of the film, but still good!

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 08:32 AM

Gran Torino, to me, got the praise it did, not because it was really all that new or groundbreaking or great, but because it just flat-out doesn't feel like most of the Hollywood bullshit that gets put out nowadays. It felt like I was transported to the 70's or something, back when every new film coming out was somewhat unique, somewhat gritty, and almost always watchable. Look at all the films Eastwood has directed and many he has starred in. It's like he just doesn't give a fuck what others movies or directors are doing, he's in his own little world doing what he wants. That, to me, is why it's a good movie, because it's really NOT anything daring or original -- it certainly feels that way compared to everything else that's currently coming out.

What kills me is that movies are actually getting cheaper to make (you can buy a NICE ASS camera now for, oh, $5000!.. compared to, what, $50,000 before?!), in a sense.. it's easier to edit, it's easier to promote, there's a BILLION writers, actors, etc. out there. It'd be so much easier to really come out with these brilliant new films. Instead, as I said elsewhere, it's a rehash, a remake, or just a piece of shit, everywhere you look except far in the underground/nobudget/experimental field (where no one IS willing to look).

The only director out there who I think is making really good big-budget films (Takeshi Kitano doesn't count since his films are still pretty cheap... and these films may not seem "big budget" to us Americans, but you gotta keep in mind that this guy has created 2 of the biggest films of all time, where he's from) is Park Chan-Wook. He uses his budget to create brilliant sets, and he is truly unique and individual. I'm not even that into Oldboy, but Mr. Vengeance, Lady Vengeance, and Cyborg are all just fucking perfect films. Can't wait for Thirst.

nicfit 08.13.2009 08:37 AM

^^^
yes

Thirst, can't wait.
I think Cyborg is underrated, everyone talks (well, you know what I mean) about oldboy etc but "I'm a cyborg.." is amazing.

I agree alson on the Gran Torino stuff you said.
It's (sadly) so uncommon to see a "big" movie well directed, with not crappy effects, etc, nowadays that people think that what they see is great just coz they're used to shit.
It definitely has a 70's flavor, on many levels.
I can't express my thoughts in english today so I'll just cut it here.

SONIC GAIL 08.13.2009 08:41 AM

again
such a good one

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 08:42 AM

Nic, Cyborg is sooooooo underrated.

I loved that one. Reminded me of my love life... heh.

nicfit 08.13.2009 09:01 AM

yeh, you know, it didn't even get distributed over here (I had to watch a rip), so yeah, looks like I'm right, but often I don't like much giving "judgments" on how movies are regarded around the world coz my pov is a bit distorted (with all the "issues" of modern film distribution policies here)...

p.s. he's a master in opening credits! ha ha I can't write today.

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 09:05 AM

I ordered it from Hong KONG. It said region 3 but it played fine on my player. The colors were so amazing.

His opening credits do always rock, but what really gets me is the FRAMING. The way he... FRAMES every shot in his films.. everything looks like a beautiful photograph...

nicfit 08.13.2009 09:10 AM

yes, that's right, like when

SPOILER

Yu-sun drowns in Mr vengeance, I think I said this already somewhere else on here, but yeah, that's probably the "saddest" event of the whole movie and I was like "ooh, this is fuckin' beautiful", just for the way it was framed/filmed..

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 09:13 AM

yes

nicfit 08.13.2009 09:19 AM

I just wish I could see those on the big screen.

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 09:58 AM

Yeah, really.

Its even better the second time around. And the Criterion DVD is fantastic. Great features and a great booklet, not to mention the picture and sound is ace.

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 12:03 PM

Videodrome is in my top 10 favorite movies ever, but I gotta say that the trailer for Videodrome is about a hundred times better than the movie. The trailer with all the weird ass footage.

viewtiful_alan 08.13.2009 02:36 PM

You've got a hard on for fucked up visuals don't you Adam? (nothin wrong with it at all)

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 02:42 PM

Yes. Boner city.

viewtiful_alan 08.13.2009 02:43 PM

Do you masturbate to Begotten?

atsonicpark 08.13.2009 02:44 PM

One time I watched it, on acid, on a huge wall, via a projector. We put cardboard over the blue and, uh, yellow (? Can't remember my primary colors right now) lenses and just left the red, so the entire film was black and red when it was projected. Insane ass trip.

viewtiful_alan 08.13.2009 02:48 PM

I've never dropped before but taht just sounds frightening yet awesome.
I didn't think you sat still or just chilled while on acid.
Only time I've been around a person on acid they were smashing their head against a wall trying to get the 'bugs' off of it.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 08.13.2009 02:51 PM

I'm imagining it far more menacing in red - even without the acid.

viewtiful_alan 08.13.2009 02:52 PM

Yeah, the version of Haxan I watched was tinted red.
When I watched it I was really high and it was quite a magical evening.
