fugazifan 10.04.2007 03:50 AM

dead cowboy is one of my all time favorite tracks

Toxa 10.04.2007 07:21 AM

sarramkrop 10.04.2007 07:23 AM

Hypermagic Mountain

nicfit 10.04.2007 07:32 AM

Hypermagic Mountain. The "new" songs I heard in a live are sick sick sick. Wanna see themmm.---

Everyneurotic 10.04.2007 10:52 AM

for me it's:

1) hypermagic mountain
2) s/t
3) ride the skies
4) wonderful rainbow

that's not to say i don't like wonderful rainbow, actually, i like it more than most music i listen, this is a scale in millimeters really, very close matches.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 10.04.2007 10:55 AM

Ride the skies.

drrrtyboots 10.04.2007 03:34 PM

Wonderful Rainbow but from their recent live shows, their new material is shaping up to be a fucking powerhouse.

atsonicpark 07.23.2008 02:19 AM

Been listening to ride the skies a lot, gonna have to move it up a bit on my list. I still like self-titled the best by far but Ride the Skies has the song "Ride the Sky" which has to be amongst the best Lightning Bolt songs. The whole album just sounds so fucking mean! I think I'll place it at # 2 now.

I think my all time favorite Lightning Bolt song is "2 Towers" -- I love how about 5 minutes of it is just that 0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-etc riff. Brilliant. Wonderful Rainbow is probably their worst though.. the second half isn't that great comparatively.

Great band.

Derek 07.23.2008 06:32 AM

My favourite Lightning Bolt is definitely Wonderful Rainbow, my least favourite is Hypermagic Mountain.

fugazifan 07.23.2008 07:24 AM

im listening to ride the skies as we speak. its great, but its no hypermagic mountain

Definitely reccomend Power of Salad.

Their best album? Hmm... Hypermagic Mountain is good but it has a few throwaways, Wonderful Rainbow falls apart near the end, Ride the Skies can be a bit much, I'll go with self-titled, thank you!

1. Self-Titled
2. Hypermagic
3. Wonderful
4. Ride

But they're all good.

you think s/t is thier best? i think its cool and all, hisham's vocals, but id say thier sound was far from perfected at that point, and its their worst record. i like wonderful rainbow best.

krastian 07.23.2008 10:50 AM

Yeah, I agree with bat....self titled kind of sounds like a demo to what they eventually would become.

atsonicpark 07.23.2008 03:16 PM

I dunno, my favorite thing about lightning bolt is the really long stretches of jamming, and self-titled has that in spades. Thinking about it now, all my favorite Lightning Bolt songs are the really long ones anyway. It does sound demo-y, but that doesn't decline from the quality to me. And it's a bit excessive but I think it's also the most powerful. I dunno. They're all good to some degree, I think "Wonderful Rainbow" has the most songs on it that aren't that great though.

Sonic Youth 37 07.23.2008 03:19 PM

Wonderful Rainbow because it has 2 Towers. The version on Power of Salad and Milkshakes is insane.

Derek 07.23.2008 03:52 PM

<3 Lightning Bolt

TWO TOWERS

Riff2: Ahh, a nice bit of tapping to play with. I'm not entirely sure of
the exact notes here, it kinda wibbles around a bit with the Whammy
pedal, but it's kinda a bit like this. You'll need to listen to the song
to get the exact number of times this kinda plays for....

Riff3: The rest of the song is all about getting the pull-off timing right,
Once you've mastered it, it's fairly straight forward. This riff literally makes
up for 70% of the song...

H P H P H P H P
A ------------------------------
D ------------------------------
G -0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-0--

Riff4: This a really nice prelude to whats coming at the end of the song ;)

G -0-5-0-0-5-0-0-9-0-0-9-0-0-7-0-0-7-0-0-3-0-0-3-0-

then into....

Then back to Riff 3 for absolutely ages. There are a few subtle
variations in timing, but I can't be bothered to write them out. I suppose
it depends how good your drummer is as to whether you can pull them off...

Riff6: At around 4'50 into the song, Riff4 and 5 repeat again, and then lead into this:
(The timing on this is really difficult to get, start slow and build up).
