Great poster! Do you have that?

!@#$%! 01.23.2008 09:07 AM

oh shit i forgot you spoke german. phew!

no i just googled that.

gmku 01.23.2008 09:09 AM

I don't really speak it. I can read a little of it. When I lived in Germany, I knew a smattering, enough to get me by in restaurants and shopping malls. "Noch ein bier, bitte," for example, is essential.

Funny how "pussycat" gets translated as "pussy." Ha! Those wild and crazy Germans.

!@#$%! 01.23.2008 09:13 AM

Music is the obvious example, but I think it applies to other things.

It works in two ways, at least for people in their 30's. Either they try too hard to appear cool, young and in tune, with the only disastrous result that they start acting in ridiculous ways, or they turn into ''mortgage and a dog'' sort of bores.

I think this will give you a glimpse as to why I despise writers like Nick Hornby and their ilk so much. There is also another thing that I notice a lot in many a thirtysomething who is into music: that irritating habit of wanting to attach every listen that they give to a certain record to their everyday lives, hobbies and activities, even though the underlying feeling is that they see music as another lifestyle accessory instead of an enjoyable thing. Now, that happens with people who are younger than that, sure, but it's a phenomenon that I excuse more in a younger person rather than someone who, by then, should have well and truly understood that a healthy dose of cynicism will never kill anyone.

gmku 01.23.2008 09:16 AM

Ha, yeah. I was in this huge record shop once in Cologne, had a few records in my arms, this German punk looking kid starts jabbering away in German and looking at the records I'm holding. He was like jeering at me in this menacing way, and all I could make out was something like "the American rock is not so good" but it sounded much scarier.

That's so true. It's not like that when you are out you remind people about their age at all, unless it's some sort of formal dinner-party thing that turns into chit-chat about such things. I am glad that my circle of mates include people in their 20's, 30's and even 40's, so you put the growing older thing into perspective.

sarramkrop 01.23.2008 09:49 AM

Last time I checked you were still a musician. We all know that musicians are particularly sensitive creatures.

floatingslowly 01.23.2008 09:55 AM

whoever told you that lied.

I'm not a musician.

:(

sarramkrop 01.23.2008 09:57 AM
