Okay, look, you're definitely going to have clarify here. To what are the bands/musicians supposed to be relevant? This board, current music, or the readership of Q magazine?

stu666 02.10.2008 07:12 AM

Spice Girls ;)

Sir Malcolm Arnold
Benjamin Britten
Sir Harrison Birtwistle
Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
Gerald Finzi
Aloys Fleischmann
Michael Nyman
Henry Purcell
George Lloyd
Thomas Tallis
Mark-Anthony Turnage
Ralph Vaughan Williams

I can't abide many of those, the British tend to make turgid composers, but they are certainly relevent to British classical music. Which is to say that we're shit at it and should stick to other things.

We're shit at reggae as well, with the exception of a few two-tone records and of course early UB40.

stu666 02.10.2008 09:36 AM

PJ Harvey

Florya 02.10.2008 11:15 AM

I'm going to assume that by 'relevant' you mean 'influential'.

Joy Division
The Clash
Throbbing Gristle
Nurse With Wound
Pink Floyd
The Sex Pistols

Toilet & Bowels 02.10.2008 11:15 AM

yeah, relevant to what?

I checked a dictionary and found out that a relevant is not an animal with tusks and trunk.

So I guess my reading of the thread as must they be in British bands with musicians is irrelephant.

(No offense meant)

my bloody valentine are irish. formed in dublin by dubliners....... yeah i know 2 of em were english but they were formed in ireland!!!!

i cant believe the amount of times ive corrected that. there was a competition on q or nme tv channel and the question was what country was mbv from... the multiple choice answers were. 1. england, 2. scotland or 3. wales!!! the answer was wales!!!!!!! dumbfucking people!

ireland is not british. it is called the republic of ireland!!!!

britain is made up of england, scotland, wales and NORTHERN ireland!!!!!

anyway...

has anyone mentioned the who or pink floyd yet?

What a stupid and ignorant thing to say.

As has already been mentioned I am reticent to mention The Jesus And Mary Chain. It's sad how they crashed. So I cannot credit them as relevant anymore. Influencial, yes. But no longer relevant in the contemporary sense.

Many people have already mentioned some of the greats.

I would also mention The Spacemen 3 as an important indie band of the late eighties/early nineties.

But I think music on both sides of the Atlantic is somewhat languishing at the moment. We are in one of those vacuous periods when no one seems to be breaking new ground creatively.

There has been a resurgence of good guitar based music over the last few years. People who can play.

But as far as something really shattering and earth shaking is concerned - well, I might be wrong, but I can't think of anyone generating the kind of excitement that even Sigue Sigue Sputnik did in the eighties - I mean they were short lived but they made a real splash at the time.

It's not always about the music. Some substitute virtuosity for inspiration. Real music is about IDEAS! New and exciting ideas.

Sorry. I went off on one. But I'm sure you music lovers understand.
