I like the Breeders, but I'm gonna have to agree that Mountain Battles pretty much sucks. I like maybe two songs on the whole album.
|
stop comparing it to Pixies/old Breeders.
if you don't like it, you don't like. that's fine. but stop comparing. also,i like it. it took a while, but i like it. |
Congratulations, laserbeard, on being the only person in the world who likes this album.

Oh pish posh to the haters. It's a good album. It took me a couple listens to adjust to it given that it's not the up beat, fun, eccentric record the band usually releases. It's sort of moody and somber at times, definitely the band's most mellow effort. And yet a lot of the rhythms, general quirks and musical tricks presented on the album are very "Breeders", several songs are subtly quite pretty, and after a half dozen listens its really grown on me. Outside of that spanish song i pretty much enjoy the whole thing.
Oh and I like the lyrics to "Bang On". |
I don't think any of their albums are "fun" or "upbeat" or "eccentric". Title TK may be a bit eccentric, and Last splash was a little fun and upbeat but as a whole most of their albums are pretty drab and lifeless and straightforward. The best song on this album, strangely, is the one that's "fun": It's the Love! That's a jam.

Um. That's why I've always like the band. They're fun to listen to.
And to be honest, while I used to love the Pixies hardcore, in retrospect the Breeders have just aged better for me. |
Did Pod ever get issued on vinyl?
|
this is a long bass thread for a band that was deadly dull back in the day and has only become more so.
|
Its a beautiful, Minimal album. It's the album i wanted them to make, its warm and human and has their personality all over it. Couldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks about it obviously but to answer the question, i really really like it. It sounds like nothing else around. really good

that's a typo, surely? Kim deal has never been "dull" |
I used to be madly in love with kim deal.
then I bought breeders records, and remembered that Black Francis wrote everything that Kim Deal ever sang or played in the Pixies. |

except Gigantic obviously anyway, one day when i track her down i'm gonna divorce my wife and marry Kim so you leave her alone y'hear? She is The Kim |
Kim's vocals in the Pixies were great. Great counterpoint to Black. When Black stopped using Kim's vocals as much (as on Trompe), the Pixies were never quite as interesting.

ok, i have had this album for about 4 or 5 weeks and i have tried to like it, god i have. but no, it just falls short and thats not being elitist or "too mainstream" or uncool, i just think its piss poor. albeit onlty slightly moreso than title tk. everyone is entitled to an opinion and i agree, you cant compare them to pixies , but ive said that already on page 1.

it had to be said again! |
They played Tipp City and Pacer at the Camden gig last week, it was amazing
|
haven't heard it. i liked a couple of songs from last splash in the early 90's, they played in bars, nice, fun, great spike jonze video, but not a musical treasure by any means. anyway i'll wait to hear it cos people here talk funny.
|
The Breeders are hardly "fun". Last Splash is as a whole, and a few other songs... but really... Pod and Title TK have always struck me as two very dark records, except for maybe a track or two. Seriously, listen to "Off You" or "Oh". I wouldn't call those tracks FUN. No reason to argue, I just have never thougt of the Pixies or the Breeders as fun. Fun is like a cutesy pop song or something, right? Even some of the songs that might be "fun" like that song that goes "Don't feed the chameleon" or whatever that awful pot-smoking anthem of a song says... isn't very fun. Just kind of a drab, dull band. Unless you're solely basing your opinion off of stuff on Last Splash.. like "Divine Hammer" and "Cannonball".
Also, as has been said before, yeah, Kim was good in the Pixies, but Frank Black wrote every song except the covers, Silver, Into the White, and Gigantic. And those are the Pixies's worst songs! Haha. The new album is impossible to like from any angle. There is just nothing interesting about it. It's cool that some people do. But I really will have to agree with Rob on this one: FUCKING DULL. |
Haven't heard the album, but I heard a few tracks when I saw them a month or two back. I can't really remember them, but I remember being entertained throughout their set even on the newer stuff.
Also, The Pixies fucking sucked, The Breeders are tolerable. |
