I've been listening to the MC5 alot, mostly Back in the USA, which really is a far better album than a lot of people seem to say.

But then, I only ever really listen to old stuff anyway, so I'm not sure that my choice really counts.

batreleaser 08.13.2008 06:39 PM

i love 'kick out the jams', its a perennial no lofi garage/punk rock masterpiece, and probably the most influential live album in rock. but, everything after blows. i cant make it through the first track on 'back in the usa', tutti frutti, corny as aerosmith.

acousticrock87 08.13.2008 06:42 PM

Jeff Buckley's live covers of Kick Out the Jams were fucking incredible. That's how I found out about MC5.

Alice Cooper - Love It To Death. This album absolutely rules, it's like if Rocket From The Tombs were signed to a major label and got a bit glammy.

JFA - Killer skate punk / hardcore.

Yo La Tengo - Just got the best of + rarities 3xCD. I love some of their songs and can't stand others. "Sugar Cube" is one of the best songs ever though.

Rodan - everything
Big Black - Atomizer
Harvey Milk - Life...The Best Game In Town
Ruins - Vrresto
Suishou No Fune - Prayer For Chibi

among others.

atsonicpark 08.14.2008 12:57 PM

GravitySlips, every single album you mentioned in that post is amazing.

atsonicpark 08.14.2008 01:04 PM

Yeah, pygmalion is probably in my top 15 of all time.

Ruins - Symphonica is definitely my favorite Ruins album... a future CLASSIC ALBUMS post from me :)

And Suishou No Fune is probably my favorite album of the year so far.

I've been on an Irish tip:
Seamus Ennis
Tommy Potts
Seosaimhin ni Bheaglaoich [I'm assuming that's her name, that could easily be the title for all I know]
Siobhoan Armstrong
'Highland Paddy'.

Also, dipping in and out of the proms. Nothing's really blown my mind, but then I've managed to miss all of the Messiaen and the Stockhausen, like a dick.

Ryoji Ikeda's test pattern is pretty special.

atsonicpark 08.14.2008 01:46 PM

Yes, the entire discography of Ryoji Ikeda is essential!

"Matrix" is so great; just a single tone.

Glice 08.14.2008 02:07 PM

I generally don't like 'concept' 'sound-art' stuff - I can't stand 'sound walks' or a lot of 'look! I made an album using only my armpit!' type record. But Ikeda is pretty exceptional.

There's a lot of great stuff on raster noton that I have a strange inability to buy. Poor.
