Hm. It's hard to describe. Think of a really beautiful mix of fuzzed-out electronics, drone, ambient, shoegaze, and glitch... Kind of a very organic-sounding electronic music that even people who aren't into electronic music could probably get into. Stuff that has lots of layers and is very intricately-made but can be put on as background music as well. Endlessly fascinating and even somewhat noisey stuff. Makes you feel good about life but isn't overly happy. Manages to be catchy and memorable without having any real hooks or melodies. I dunno, just really creative and good stuff.

Here's the top 3!
-- Let's cut the suspense: at the third position, we have Radiohead and their electro album Kid A, released in 2000 ![]() Then, at the second position, another 2000-released album, and another mention for Sonic Youth, with NYC Ghosts & Flowers ![]() And then what? Well, no surprise: last but no least, the official best album of the 00's, according to Sonic Youth Boardies, is another Sonic Youth release: Sonic Nurse ! ![]() |
Sonic Nurse
Kid A NYC Ghosts & Flowers ? are next? {edit} Man, too late... |
nurse got 1? over murray strret and nyc ghosts and flowers? jesus. anyways, stoked flood and endless summer got so high on the list. makes up for the strokes and bright eyes being anywhere on there (cmon guys, the fucking strokes?)/
|
Well, that list was actually pretty great..
I love most of those albums (not a huge fan of Sonic Nurse or The strokes or Beck but those were to be expected)... and there were quite a few surprises. Thanks, syrfox! |
Hmm, I picked Sonic Nurse for number one. Also had Murray Street, Kid A, Sung Tongs and The Argument.
The First Original Silence, Flower with No Color & Taiga didn't make it I see. |
Wow, atari, you voted for Flower with No Color? I totally forgot about that album actually. I'm going to go put that on. Yoshimi P-We is great.
Best surprise of the list: No fucking Dinosaur Jr or Flaming Lips! |
Nah, I think that's the only one.
But still, I thought that was definitely going to be on there. I actually thought "I Trust My Guitar, Etc." was going to be on there (ick)... also kinda surprised that Sunn O))) wasn't on there, I know there's a ton of fans on here. I respect everyone here for having the common decency to not include fucking Mars Volta. Another surprise, to me, is no McLusky... I was under the impression that they were fairly well-liked on here. |
Yeah, it's about albums, right? So you gotta hand it to 'em for originality.
my votes (admittedly made in a rush - some will deride the Battles, for instance (kinda do myself) - didn't know about Vision Creation Newsun being accepted or not) 1 Sonic Youth - Sonic Nurse 2 OOIOO - Taiga 3 Radiohead - Kid A 4 The Original Silence - The First Original Silence 5 Fugazi - The Argument 6 Sonic Youth - Murray Street 7 Yoshimi & Yuka - Flower With No Color 8 Battles - Mirrored 9 Neil Young - Prairie Wind 10 Animal Collective - Sung Tongs |
Sunn O))) actually nearly made it in. The Flaming Lips and Dino Jr were really far though. And no one at all mentionned the Mars Volta, which is great :D
|
We should just assume Vision Creation Newsun would have placed in the top 5 if it had counted.
|
man this was awesome!!!!!
I never thought geogaddi would made it so far.... okay murray street should have been on top for me, but almost anything Ive voted is inside!!!! GOOOOOOOD |

Hahah White Pony's a pretty good album yeah, but I doubt many people on here would agree...

of course they dont. thats why its in my top 3! |
Hell yes NYC Ghosts and Flowers got to NUMBER TWO!
Also love the Flood placement. |
thats because dinosaur jr hasnt made a good album this decade.
And im a dinosaur jr. fan. I like the flaming lips, but I liked their early stuff the most. Which came out before 2000. Im not sure when the soft bulletin came out, but that was the last album of theirs i really dug. I like their new stuff too (a lot more than i like bright eyes and the strokes), but I can see why they wouldnt make the list. I saw them for free at the University of Florida, and it was pretty amazing. I had only been drinking, but I think even the sober people probably thought someone slipped something in their drink. Lips fans are pretty creative and definitely go all out. I walked to the show behind a guy dressed like captain hook (minus the hook) riding on a double deck bicycle (one frame welded on top of another frame). Later on I saw the same faux-pirate dancing with a human sized turtle. That was pretty interesting. All in all though, I would say that is a pretty damn good list. Better than anything rolling stone fucks could put together. Thank you very much SYRFox, that was really cool of you to do, not to mention very well done. I completely forgot about The Glow Pt. 2 by the way. That might be in my top 25 of all time. I feel dumb. |
Well the top 3 were completely to be expected, though I'm pleasantly surprised that both SY albums beat out Radiohead.
For me, the biggest surprise was that Unwound wasn't higher up given how much lip service they get on here. But then, although I think LTIY was their definitive statement and ideal swan song, I imagine that a lot of their fans still prefer Fake Train or Repetition more. |
