There used to be supplemental type loans that didn't require a parent's cosign.

The US banking industry is in an uproar because Obama has proposed directly removing the banks from student loans and taking away the banks' profits by having the govt lend directly.

There still is. I can get loans without a cosigner, but at this point I can't really tell if it'll be enough because the financial aid, school offered money, etc isn't all in yet.
