A Priest Driven Ambulance is my favorite Flaming Lips album.

exploding plastic candle 10.27.2009 12:12 AM

Has anyone else here listened to zaireeka?

pbradley 10.27.2009 12:17 AM

Yes. Great album. The dogs barking at the end of "The Big Ol' Bug Is the New Baby Now" was a particular highlight.

exploding plastic candle 10.27.2009 12:24 AM

YES. man it's been a while since I've listened to that album. It's kind of an effort to get it all set up but when you do it's so incredibly worth it.

I love pretty much everything I've heard up until Clouds, although admittedly that's only 4 albums, because I don't really know the pre-Priest albums at all. Transmissions just happens to be my favourite.

SonicBebs 10.27.2009 06:13 AM

listened this morning on the bus. sounds very good so far

atsonicpark 10.27.2009 07:12 AM

I just can't get over how weird this record is. Are they still on a major label? Anyway, I dunno if anyone else has made this connection, but some of the tracks have something of a Can vibe to 'em.

Dave Fridmann is an amazing producer, isn't he? Check out Zazen Boys - 4 sometime, he did an amazing job on that album.

DanielCarlson 10.27.2009 07:28 AM

I'm listening to it now, and shit, it's good. Now this is a lot more interesting than everything else I've heard by them.

I'm gonna try Transmissions later!

SonicBebs 10.27.2009 07:29 AM

i thought i'd never buy another Lips album again until i read all the reviews of this saying how wierd it was and how it didn't have any catchy pop hooks.

The reviews have all been pretty bad in the uk music magazine press. Which is usually a really good sign

I got into the lips in a big way when Clouds came out and to my ears its never been beaten. Amazing and ridiculously catchy melodies backed by genuinely extra terrestial sounds and drug addled wierdness.

You dont need hooks for a great record and Embryonic is really good, but damn the flaming lips are the modern kings of huge melodies. To me it needs 3 or 4 massive tunes like "Pompeii am Götterdämmerung" or "Lightening Strikes the Postman" to hang the rest of the album on bfore it becomes this masterpiece that everyone is sayin it is.

I'll admit that upon first listen, I felt the same way. "There's no fucking songs!" But, after some spins, the whole fucking thing is one gigantic song, hahaha....I dunno. There is much merit to having a whole lotta fragments, and working on them, making it into a 70min "piece" if you will......I think it's brilliant. There ARE some great melodies in there, but they just sort of surface here and there, as opposed to being the Big Thing that makes the album work.

I dunno if that makes sense at all......Love this album!

el duderino 10.27.2009 03:15 PM

No doubt, only given it one proper listen and a couple of background ones, and already blows AWWTM out of the water. At this stage it seems to build a hell of a lot of tension and but with no big pay off - kinda leaves you hangin... which is probably exactly what they were goin for those crazy lips.

atsonicpark 10.28.2009 02:28 AM

It's a bit too long but otherwise I love it. A+ album.

Skuj 10.30.2009 11:51 PM

Mofos....I just cannot get over how great this album is. I'm just sayin.....

And there are "songs".....great great songs.....they emerge after about 10 spins. The Lips are fucken geniuses on this one......album of the year imho.

Skuj 11.03.2009 11:44 PM

Oh Man....have I gushed over this enough yet?

It's so great.......fuck........

SuperCreep 11.03.2009 11:49 PM

I'm still waiting till I get my LP in the mail to hear this one, but I'm sure I'm going to love it.

Forgive my laziness, but is there a track listing for the double vinyl? I'm eager to see how the 4 sides are divied up.

This album fucking blows me away. But y'all heard that 10x already.

Decayed Rhapsody 11.03.2009 11:55 PM

Not that I know of yet.

It's supposedly on backorder until later this month/early December too.

I love you.

After a few more spins, I'm gonna try a proper review, instead of just gushing "OMFG i l0ve this s00 much lulz!!111."

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I haven't been this excited about an album in a long time.

Skuj 11.04.2009 12:06 AM
