in my opinion, sister probably has the best track order of any of their albums. i mean daydream nation is obviously undescribably beautiful, but as far as one record goes, i have to say sister. it rocks the hardest and is set up perfectly.
when in doubt, choose the album with kotton krown on it |
I can't vote because the whole idea that these two albums represent the best of Sonic Youth is a widespread belief I completely don't support. It doesn't surprise me that they've come out on top through this process, but I can't validate it.

I'd go with Sister
|
Yes I DO adore DN and recognise it for what it is... but I don't think it would even be in my top 10 fave SY albums.
I am of course rooting for Sister... C'mon boardies don't be predictable and let DN win. Quote:
Right on brother... |

I wouldn't rate ATL first, but it's definitely way up there - Hoarfrost is one of Lee's finest moments, and the rest of the album is great as well. It has such a lovely ethereal / dream-like quality to it. Mind you, Silver Session is in my top 5, so take my opinion with lots of salt. :D |
Fuck DDN again. Sister all the way, sister.
|
still think EVOL is far better than both. But whatever. I voted SISTER. "Schizo," "Kotton Krown," & "PCH" for the win.

haha
my guess is that Daydream wins. Nice f'ing poll. Yawn. |

Yeah, but not in the best way possible. Compare the first five seconds of each album. Tells you all you need to know. DDN stars with some noodling. You're in for a long haul. Sister starts with a slamming drum beat. You're in the game right away. Maybe if DDN had a more interesting sound...but it doesn't. It's too clean, too kinda gross. I flip around a lot. Can't be bother to listen to the whole thing all the way through. Can't be bothered to listen to most of the songs all the way through. Sister, though. Whoa. Still, after all these years, whoa. |

Sister is easily their worst 80s effort.

explain |
80's albums:
1. Evol 2. Confusion 3. Whitey 4. s/t 5. Sister 6. DDN 7. Bad Moon This is based on my honest listening habits so F what you think. |
this has probably been said so many times by fans, but...
sonic youth ep needs a lot more love. i really like how television/talking heads influence on it. its in the new york tradition, yet also their approach is so unique and interesting |
my FAVORITE thing about the EP is the bass in "Burning Spear"... I would have loved if there had been a tad more dub influence on say SY/CONFUSION/KILL YR IDOLS. It's so perfectly executed. It's not like The-Clash-Gone-Reggae stuff or anything. It's just like wink-wink-dub-dub. So fucking hottt.
|
where's the rather ripped button? i need it...oh i love daydream but today i'll listen sister.

the bass line in "the good and the bad" is very hot to! |
Daydream. It was my first SY album, it's got my favourite SY song (Eric's Trip), as well as other favourites (Cross the Breeze, Candle, Total Trash, Hey Joni, Rain King). Whenever I'm not listening to it, I think "it's good but it's not that great." But when I listen to it, I think "wow. This is that great". Sister, on the other hand, took awhile for me to enjoy. Stereo Sanctity is still a favourite, but it's one of only a few tracks I think are really great.

Sister, becuz of schizo, but IŽll love them both.
(that said, Evol or BMR should have won me thinks) |
