I have no idea what you mean. Malkmus has always been cryptic and/or non-nonsensical, at least far beyond Slanted. Brighten the Corners in part. has some way out lyrics. "One of us is a cigar stand and one of us is a lovely blue incandescent guillotine"..? To me that's one of the trademarks of Pavement, off the top of his head spontaneity. |
Could be interesting, I'd see them.

I don't think the lyrics on Btc or WZ are non-cryptic, direct, or uninteresting |
Guess I'd better start saving for next May's ATP as well then...

You guys really don't think his approach to lyrics changed after Slanted?! Well, they certainly became less interesting to me, what with his tongue-in-cheek references to Smashing Pumpkins and Geddy Lee. They are definitely more straightforward, and they don't scare me anymore.
Also, he sings like an asshole quite often. |
malkmus sings like an asshole because he's a smug little asshole. but i like him that way.

yr killing me
yr killing me gain it's not my fault it's not my fault again pretty straightforwards |
stop breathing
stop breathing for me now write it on a postcard range life, i need a range life so i can settle down settle down etc. Compare that to "grip-force the vials, strip the locks, smash the set, slash the beds .... like a docent's lisp, like a damsel's spit, like a dry gin's twist, like a poor droll sir, like a poke's dull spurs, like a pastor's flock" and so on and so on. I don't know, they just seemed more interesting before... we can debate the crypticness, the directness, etc etc etc all day. I'm just saying, his lyrics suddenly and dramatically got less interesting after Slanted and got less and less interesting until now where they are just dull and boring. Like Malkmus himself, hey! |
Parfum V is the GREATEST
she's got the radio active and it makes me feel OK I don't feel OK |
Well, look at this way. Until the success of Slanted, they weren't really a band, just a way to kill time before jobs and school. Afterwards they actually toured and picked up some new members. As the band grew I think his style changed, since he was technically in a "real" band now. Hence why Slanted is very different from all four of their other records lyrically.
Kinda like Sonic Youth... Compare lyrics to say, The World Looks Red to Dirty Boots or something. Slanted has some killer lyrics but it's hard to rank them lyrically since after that his lyrics were such a different style. ~Jeremy~ |
Well Slanted and Enchanted sucks anyways. (well not really, but it's my least favorite album of theirs. Terror Twilight I just straight up hate, and thus can't call my least favorite)
Wowee has some pretty weird lyrics on it. I don't really know what the fuck any of those songs are about. |
Brazillian nuts.

# 1. Wowee # 2. Slanted # 3. Westing # 4. CR, CR # 5. Brighten # who cares. TT

Pavement are too old to reunite and for me to take them seriously.
I mean, to me, Pavement is the soundtrack to youth itself, and I just can't see that kind of music being done by people in their late 30s... |
