My cyberpunk knowledge begins and ends with William Gibson...but he rules.

shabbray2.0 12.05.2009 12:04 PM

anybody read spook country yet? good? not? why?

Keeping It Simple 12.05.2009 02:12 PM

When I think of Cyberpunk, I think of virtual reality, which was a vision of the future which laughably hit a dead end and turned out to be a total disaster.

Yeah, I read it. It's a great read. Gibson doing his cyberpunk tricks in the present world. A bit of a fake rock band back history for the protagonist that I didn't buy or particularly like, but otherwise good. If you liked Pattern Recognition, you'll like it.

did it really though? certainly the gloves and helmets are laughable, but there are people all over the world spending inordinate amounts of time in virtual worlds these days. cyber happened to a degree it isn't punk anymore, it's completely mainstream.

Not quite. Those virtual worlds are seen through a screen, they're not a total immersion in a physical sense, comprende?

of course I comprende. hell, I even grok if you want to go there. that's why I noted the helmets and gloves have tanked so far (however if you watch kids playing Wii it's not exactly absent from the mainstream either...)

buuut, total immersion is not a physical thing, it's a virtual thing (i.e. the very name of the so-called experience!) and Korean kids dying from not sleeping or eating in one person shooter arcades are certainly totally immersed!

pbradley 12.05.2009 11:02 PM

Total immersion is a physical thing, too.

But that is speaking of Being itself.

yes, but total immersion in virtual reality is not physical by definition. check with Kirkegaard on that one.
