i thought "women as lovers" had one legit good track (the opening one, can't remember the name), but it was overall just very exhaustive of their sound. this album sounds so much more rejuvenated to my ears.

ain;t nothing like spinning KNIFE PLAY on the turntable!!!!!!
|
theres a fantastic pop song there
you are pregnant, you are dead something like that |
I don't think I have actually heard any of their albums. They seem to bore me, but then again I haven't given them a chance.
|
Already halfway through this one, and it's nothing special so far. Not even close to Knife Play, A Promise or Fabulous Muscles. It just feels unnecessary.
|
what album feels "necessary?"
every single album in all of humanity is just entertainment to waste some time to, all extremely unnecesary. |
Anything by KoRn pretty much. That's about it.
|
It's just that if I'm going to listen to Xiu Xiu, why would I want to listen to a half-assed version of Xiu Xiu? Especially when their meatier material is so flavorful.
|
Wonderful album. Very much more pop than their old stuff, but I don't see anything wrong with that.
|
im going to see them live tomorrow - I've never quite been able to get into them. One of my friends quite is, but it'll be interesting to see if live they change my opinion.
|
Yeah.. fuck this album.
|
Actually I think this album is their best since The Air Force (another album I really really liked... some forgetable songs but damn, the good ones on that album kicked my ass). Knife Play forever though!
DON'T FUCK WITH ME! DON'T FUCK WITH ME! THIS, THIS IS THE WORST VACATION EVER, I AM GOING TO CUT OPEN YOUR FOREHEAD WITH A ROOFING SHINGLE |
Like, I started listening to this band a few weeks after their first album came out. So, I think this is one of those bands that you eventually grow out of. I know I did. It's just so tired. I'm glad they're on TRL and VH1 now or whatever with Liars and Animal Collective and Static-X.
|
I didn't start listening to them until a year or so ago but I can definitely see where you are coming from. It IS interesting that music like this is getting widespread attention even if it is something that esoteric music listeners like you or I have gotten sick of. I've been listening to Animal Collective since about 2005 and I used to think they were this totally weird experimental band... but now people I know personally listen to them without my influence and they are nominated for Brit awards and making catchy synth songs and etc.
Static-X? Hahaha, not heard that name in years. |
I just don't think Xiu Xiu do anything all that interesting, they attempt to do these tired and obvious avant garde little things that just come off as contrived and annoying. Their production has always annoyed me quite a bit, as Jamie's voice is mixed way too loud, and there are annoying noises that abruptly interrupt the flow. While, again, this stuff interested me a while back, now it's just hard to listen to.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some Jandek. |
i've listened to this album five times in the past two days. i know it's early, but i personally think this is by far the best album they've made since fabulous muscles. some of these songs are crazy infectious.
okay, i'll stop jizzing over this album now. |

Hahahahaha. I just died. Quote:
Yeah I remember in like '06 me and a friend started flipping out because we had finally met someone else who knew who AC were. Seems like everyone around here knows 'em now days. They're even "played out" for most people now. Making them hip and indie again. Quote:
Yeah, that's why the sound mixer at the show kept on turning him down. It was hilarious watching him have to politely explain that the songs are supposed to sound the way they did. |
When I saw them the second time, there was tons of reverb on his voice and he said to the sound mixer, "Please, I need it be dryer, less reverb, louder on the vocals, quieter on her vocals, little more reverb on hers..." regarding his cousin. Then he did a really distorted, noisey Sad Pony Guerilla Girl that sucked.
I gotta say, though, one thing.. their songs sure do sound pretty loose, in places, and -- for a lack of a better word -- "random", but they actually recreated the songs really well in a live setting. Actually, I think the first show I saw by them was better than any of their records. |
I don't see how it could be compared to animal collective. To me, xiu xiu are angry gay pop songs with a sense of humour and desperation and sadness. Something like that.
Also, I don't see why people expect things to sound good live. Some bands are live bands, others artists like xiu xiu will definitely sound better on record. I don't expect anyone to reproduce exactly what I've heard on the record, that's the fun of it. |

I can dig that |
