I always heard it was a woman, and I thought recently they did DNA testing a discovered it was a woman. I don't know if they can actually do that or not just by studying the DNA (not saying they can't, I just know nothing about DNA testing). But it would make sense, a woman wanting all the local prostitutes dead, working in place of all the women who's husbands were running of with the local hookers...
