I have absolutely no idea who did the original. Could've been any number of people. I'd up the Dubliners version, which is ace, but I don't have any means of transferring vinyl to digital. There was a gorgeous acapella version that Peel played when we went into Afghanistan, but I can't for the life of me remember who by, which is a shame, as it were ace. |
i refuse to vote in a poll where "soldier boy" by the shirelles is not one of the oprions.HA!

Ooh, oooh - Laibach's version of War (What is it good for?). That's a good 'un.
|
Gaye Bykers on Acid's World War Seven Blues shoud have been there too.

I want to hear this, STAT. |
I remember them doing Queen's One Vision with utter ruthlessness, but I've never heard their take on War.

Laibach pretty much epitomize utter ruthlessness. Why else would we be so fond?

i haven't heard laibach's version, but doa's version rules! |
What about "Total War" by NON?
That rules. Laibach were about 5,000,000,000,000,999% cooler before they started doing novelty cover versions. |
As far as "Songs about War," the choices given and the following really fall into the "Anti-War" category.
There's no Talking World War III Blues or Masters of War by Dylan. There's no Run Through the Jungle or Fortunate Son by CCR. There's no War Pigs by Black Sabbath. There's no Seconds by U2. There's no Born in the U.S.A. by The Boss. There's no Give Peace A Chance or Happy Xmas, War is Over. There are no time-worn classics like Morning Dew or Ball of Confusion. There is no bloody Revolution. |
funny how no one chooses system of a down.

There's even no "Russians" by Sting. I'm surprised Hip Priest would forget or choose to omit this song that sums up the Cold War pretty well.
The way Sting works Krushchev in there is great...I mean is there any other song that mentions this historical snapshot of the entire Cold War from the infamous U.N. shoe-beating incident and successfully works it into popular music? The Manhattan Project and Robert "I have become Death" Oppenheimer are in there too; it's a fucking history lesson and still a decent song. Dismiss him and yawn if you must, but the guy simply has a pair of brass ones to begin a verse with a line like "there is no historical precedent." "Russians" In Europe and America, there's a growing feeling of hysteria Conditioned to respond to all the threats In the rhetorical speeches of the Soviets Mr. Krushchev said we will bury you I don't subscribe to this point of view It would be such an ignorant thing to do If the Russians love their children too How can I save my little boy from Oppenheimer's deadly toy There is no monopoly on common sense On either side of the political fence We share the same biology Regardless of ideology Believe me when I say to you I hope the Russians love their children too There is no historical precedent To put the words in the mouth of the President There's no such thing as a winnable war It's a lie that we don't believe anymore Mr. Reagan says we will protect you I don't subscribe to this point of view Believe me when I say to you I hope the Russians love their children too We share the same biology Regardless of ideology What might save us, me, and you Is that the Russians love their children too |
I'm glad I'm on ignore, because that is honestly the most conservative, old man bollocks I have ever had the misfortune to read on this forum. For fuck's sake, fucking Sting? Is this what my grandparents fought the Nazis for, so you could go around preaching your hateful message of 'accept Sting, he's not your enemy'? I think it's sick, genuinely fucking sick.

I'm having a hard time choosing between Nena and Slayer, believe it or not.
|
I can't believe you didn't vote for Slayer!
I really like 99 Luftballons, although the English lyrics version is terrible. |
