Can't you just bring me some pills, cunt?

Glice 11.15.2006 06:40 PM

Can I just say that I dislike nearly everything that Hayden likes? Thanks. I feel warm and comfortable now.

No need for that, honeypot.I'd rather feed you live maggots and excreta to placate the insatiable anger that seems to motivate your rife posts.

It's only because I'm a hipster and you hate hipster music.

EyeballGrowth 11.15.2006 10:29 PM

Yeah Yeah Yeah's

The White Stripes

Bloc Party - also because the guy sings horribly

Cat Power

Modest Mouse - even though their early stuff rocks

Death Cab for Cutie - but they also just flat out suck

The 97th Hammer 11.16.2006 01:26 AM

Conor Oberst is the reason I listen to noise. Only harsh PE contains noise with frequencies high enough to block out the whine. Now I just have to dread the day when someone makes a noise album entirely from bright eyes samples.

atari 2600 11.16.2006 07:35 AM

Bright Eyes is goofy, just plain goofy. Just when you thought you could get past some of the more annoying vocal mannerisms of Jeff Mangum in Neutral Milk Hotel and enjoy it for the music, some joker like Conor comes along to throw his wreck into the dreck vocal arena.

Shame on me. From before, I forgot two big "townie" bands that bar owners love to play:
Namely, Grand Funk Railroad and Cheap Trick. Neither are the worst band in the world, but both are still skin crawl-inducing.

atari 2600 11.16.2006 07:46 AM

Although, good music should not be avoided because it is un-hip and it shouldn't be knee-jerk dismissed either just because it is hip. Great music goes beyond any of these considerations, because music is key in defining a zeitgeist, and therefore, its relative importance or unimportance should not be subject to the vicissitudes of day-to-day attitudes and opinions.

EyeballGrowth 11.16.2006 09:13 PM

One thing that sucks horribly about the indie scene of the past 6 years is vocals. All the new alternative independent bands of this decade HAVE to sing with that STUPID goddamn skin crawling annoying style so all the Emo kids will listen to them. I hear so many bands that are so talented but the singer just makes them so unbearable

I've got some of the examples:

Wolf Eyes
Hair Police
Yellow Swans
and all of this american crappy noise.

hell, if you want noise, get the real thing and go for japanese output.

Oh bollocks, it's only five minutes since I last repped you.

Toilet & Bowels 11.17.2006 09:59 AM

wolf eyes are an excellent live band, that's why they are so popular, they know how to (as our american friend Savage Clone might say) "rock da partay". forget about wolf eyes records though.

Cracked Magazine's
The Five Most Unintentionally Funny Albums of 2006
a fairly humorous article with embedded YouTube vids
1. Inhuman Rampage by Dragon Force

2. The Life Pursuit by Belle and Sebastian
3. Jibbs Feat Jibbs by Jibbs
4. Amputechture by Mars Volta
5. The Black Parade by My Chemical Romance

I really like three of those albums, which probably says a lot about my penchant for the absurd. I'm not sure why the reviewer fails to point out that DragonForce are enjoyable because of the absurdity.

I have, for reasons I'm not entirely convinced on myself, refused to listen to In the Aeroplane Over the Sea even in the knowledge that it should be right up my alley.

Kuhb 05.06.2019 12:38 AM

I was like this with The Drones for wayyy too long. Despite being a band loved by the worst kind of flannelette-clad bourgeois inner city share house hipsters, they're fucking brilliant.

ilduclo 05.06.2019 08:40 AM

Claypool, the followers are all frat boys, at least the couple times I bothered seeing him

All the memery, the hipster-cred and the (imo) terrible band name kept me from listening to it for a long time. When I got around to it, I loved it though. Do yourself a favor and just give it a shot. I know, all the fuss about it really is annoying. But I think it's a lovely, very emotive album. And you know, worst thing that could happen is you don't like it and move on with your life.

Vampire Weekend until I heard Modern Vampires of the City and stopped giving a fuck

Kanye West (seriously) until I really gave him a chance and listened to the music

Car Seat Headrest, but it’s never really been possible for me to be annoyed by a kid who makes such badass music.

Nirvana :)
I liked Nevermind when it came out, but then literally everybody on the entire planet liked it and I started to dislike it because the entire planet liked it. And I never liked any of the later albums at all.
The other day there was this girl on the bus probably early twenties in a Nivana smiley T-shirt and I thought "How can you wear that shirt if you've never seen them live? You weren't even born"

d.sound 06.23.2019 11:17 AM

I love a lot of bands I have never seen live, living and dead. I don't go to shows that cost more than 20 bucks. Excepter don't tour and live in NYC. I love a lot of bands from other countries. Can't do anything about a person being dead.

You only wear t-shirts of bands you've seen live?

Yes. I know it's a stupid rule but I'm sticking with it. I only buy merch at concerts as a souvenir. Except the Oiseaux Tempete shirt I got from their bandcamp. But that was because they weren't selling them at their show.

d.sound 06.23.2019 05:41 PM

Yeah that is weird. Come to think of it though shows are the only place I buy band shirts.

The only band shirt I can think of owning where I never saw them live... Was nirvana, lol.

I had a sonic youth shirt before I saw them but I remedied that asap. First real concert i saw upon adulthood was traveling to dc in 2000 for a 2 nighter sy/Stereolab.

I thought they suuuuuuuuuuuuuccckkkkked. I didn't get it. Then in less than a year they were on SNL. No comprendo.

* Speaking of, I thought they went downhill (off a cliff) after their Black Flag record.

Modest Mouse turned to garbage after Moon and Antarctica.

I think I start to dislike bands less because they became popular, and more because they lost the muse.

For example, I fucking LOVE Charli XCX. Sing along pop songs with Autechre beats? Yes, please.

Toilet & Bowels 06.24.2019 07:48 AM

In an Aeroplane Over the Sea os one of the most overrated records ever. Dusk at Cubist Castle aside everthing I've heard from Elephant 6 is either boring or dog shit.

but yeah i wouldn’t donate a pint of blood to listen again or anything.

Savage Clone 06.25.2019 06:03 PM

For me, that one and the aforementioned neutral milk hotel have some of the most irritating vocalists ever to vocalize. I never really understood why people didn't find them immediately abrasive. Plus the songs aren't that great. there are quite a few bands that I don't like whose success I understand but those two really escape me.

I always hated NMH.
I thought Isaac Brock could write some amusing lyrics. Lonesome Crowded West was good but I haven't listened to them in over a decade.

Joanna Newsom's Milk Eyed Mender is legitimately good. The one after though... Can't remember what the title was... I thought its popularity was an elaborate joke. I found it was a good barometer of pretentiousness if someone said they liked it. And fucking Van Dyke Parks did arrangements! Sad. Song Cycle and Discover America are brilliant.

!@#$%! 06.25.2019 08:27 PM

Ys? i like Ys. seriously. even bought the fucking vinyl!

go ahead, laugh :D

d.sound 06.26.2019 12:20 AM

No offense. I just didn't get it. It was like renaissance? The arrangements were bizarre, even for me. Up and down and all over the place. It made me dizzy.

I liked the simplicity of the first one.

I definitely have a bad reaction to her voice but in her case I can see that she is actually extremely talented and it's an issue of taste on my part. I guess I get why she has fans but I'm not one of them. There's quite a few people on that deal-breaker voice list for me I guess.
Tom Waits, Kate Bush, Bjork, etc. I wouldn't put modest mouse in that league though; just the annoying voice part. Still basically an issue of taste on my part, yes. But without the same level of deference, perhaps.
