Bathtub Shitter's One Fun EP is fucking legit. Unholy Grave is pretty good, but I think they're a bit overrated.

I can get down with most of what is mentioned in this thread, but I haven't seen Terrorizer mentioned yet, and that is shameful.

Xasthur sucks balls so badly

Derek 04.02.2011 10:07 AM

I enjoy the music of Xasthur but for American black metal I think Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice, Velvet Cacoon and Weakling are worth people's time more.

Really? I don't think you've ever mentioned those bands ever in the history of everything.

this album makes nearly all other metal obsolete.

YES!

Dropdead, Amebix, and Dystopia deserve name drops as well.

I haven't mentioned tons of things in the history of everything....

But just for the record, if ya look really hard you'll see that I've mentioned Melvins + Earth a pretty good bit.

Derek 04.03.2011 04:46 AM

I'm yanking your chain.
I'm terrible at this, we need n'ik to take over.

atsonicpark 04.03.2011 06:50 AM

Weakling is my favorite metal band ever.

But uh.. Krallice, Gorguts, Necrophagist, Severed Saviour, Obscura, Visceral Bleeding, Vomitory, Enemymine (kinda noise-metal), Graves at Sea, Dodheimsgard, Cryptopsy (early), yada yada, all good. I used to be huge into death metal. I burn myself out on it pretty quickly but it's good if you're into ridiculous riff fests.

Necrophagist are pretty much untouchable DM, imo, maybe "too" good, but certainly the ONLY death metal band a LOT of people can get into, I've noticed.

The first style of music I was ever really into when I started downloading music was grindcore... god... 324, Cripple Bastards, Bathtthub Shitter, XXX Maniak, ROT, GUT, Gore Beyond Necropsy, etc. I HIGHLY reccomend Japanese grindcore bands. Also, "porn gore" is a great genre!

jonathan 04.03.2011 09:41 AM

I've always had a tenuous relationship with Amebix, but Dropdead and Dystopia are both totally solid. Really, it's all about Dropdead's first LP, and I think everything Dystopia ever did was amazing... so depressed. Fucking love it.

Seriously y'all, Bathtub Shitter's One Fun is fucking amazing. I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE that record. Cripple Bastards are always hit or miss for me. Have any of you guys ever heard Suppression? Their side of the CB split is fucking incredible... way better than Cripple Bastard's output in that instance in my opinion.

Also, Dahmer... totally brutal.

The definition of "metal" in this thread is puzzling.

Uriah Heep are great and everything, but that is either prog rock or just "hard rock" depending on which period you are talking about. I don't see that as remotely "metal."

Derek 04.04.2011 09:33 AM

I only enjoy black metal or funeral doom so nothing I've said has been too off.

Oh, those genres.. and maudlin of the Well. Lots and lots of maudlin of the Well.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 04.06.2011 04:54 AM

A few more...

I always thought Converge had really interesting vocals. Their production is absolutely filthy, for the techier sound that they go for.

Cattle Decapitation puts on a really good live show. Humanure will always be a classic in my eyes.

Oh, and nobody mentioned The Berzerker yet...

Their drummer is absolutely fucking sick!!! He gravity blasts like no other; I swear.

most of the time, that is the best kind of metal

In seventies Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep and Black Sabbath were called metal. I like quite a lot also Ac/Dc and Nazareth seventies production, but I think they were called already then Hard rock. I think some critic called the sixties band Vanilla Fudge first heavy metal band and I think it´s not totally wrong, there is quite heavy stuff in their Near the beginning album (at least Shotgun and Break song is). I think in music to put the band in categories is always difficult. And I think the bands fit very well on some category are mostly boring.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 04.16.2011 11:38 AM

Anyone else think Ill Innocence is one of the best black metal albums of all time?
You just don't hear tracks like Blind My Eyes, or Delirium Daydream on any other BM album.

Dead-Air 04.16.2011 11:59 AM

Off the top of my head:

Sabbath - Master of Reality
Led Zeppelin I
1st two Maiden albums with Paul Dianno on vocals
Judas Priest - Unleashed in the East
Metallica through Garage Days Re-revisited
All Sunn O)))
All Melvins
Motorhead up to Orgasmatron
"Fast as a Shark" by Accept
a little Slayer every now and again
Pat Fucking Boone
Go Girl Crazy by the Dictators

must admit, I don't keep up much these days with the genre, though I often like Black Metal stuff when I hear it. I end up just watching a few Gorgoroth videos on you tube and calling it a night though.

Gallhammer Completes New Album ‘The End’

New record out April 25th on Peaceville Records Japan’s, Gallhammer, has completed work on its third studio album, titled The End, to be released April 25th on Peaceville Records.

The End evolves further from the foundations of Gallhammer’s previous effort, Ill Innocence, and its debut, Gloomy Lights, with an album of disturbing and dark drone music, consisting of a hypnotic bass and drum combination mixed with the band’s raw black metal and punk origins.
Founding member, Vivian Slaughter (bass/vocals), describes the overall album direction as "strange and psychedelic experimental sounds of doom".
The End, was recorded at Void)))Lab, Tokyo, in October 2010, and mastered in Oslo in February 2011 by Vivian and Maniac (Skitliv, ex-Mayhem).??

The track list for The End is…
1. The End
2. Rubbish CG202
3. Aberration
4. Sober
5. Entropy G35
6. Wander
7. 108=7/T-NA

The release of Ill Innocence in 2007 brought Gallhammer to the attention of the metal world with its uncompromising and raw blackened doom sounds. The band followed the release with multiple European tours, culminating in cover stories with the UK’s Terrorizer and Zero Tolerance magazines.
Stay tuned for more information on Gallhammer and The End.

Gallhammer is…

April 25th!?!?!!! YES!!!!

Dr. Eugene Felikson 04.17.2011 03:05 AM

^ Read the article more closely. Wondered what the fuck happened to Mika Penetrator.

Found this: http://www.roadrunnerrecords.com/bla...sitemID=145644

Quote:

GALLHAMMER Parts Ways With Guitarist, Prepares To Enter Studio - Sep. 7, 2010 Guitarist/vocalist Mika Penetrator has left GALLHAMMER — the Japanese extreme metal group that draws on black metal, doom metal, and crust punk — to concentrate on her other band. The remaining members of GALLHAMMERVivian Slaughter (vocals, bass) and Risa Reaper (drums, vocals) — plan to continue the band as a duo.

GALLHAMMER is currently working on material for the follow-up to 2007's "Ill Innocence" and will enter the studio in October to record what Slaughter describes as a collection of "strange and psychedelic experimental sounds of doom."

You can now follow GALLHAMMER at the band's new Twitter page which will be constantly updated with news and progress reports.

Although GALLHAMMER had been known primarily as a black metal/punk act, "Ill Innocence" is impressively diverse, showing their implementation of many influences and moods from both metal and non-metal genres. The themes are based around isolation, oppression, a world without colour, with Vivian describing the imagery like "Delirium - as being in a midday nightmare under the scorching sunshine"; all wrapped in a poetic disparity. "Ill Innocence" also features recordings of the tracks "Speed of Blood" and "At the Onset of the Age of Despair" as previewed in demo form on "The Dawn of…" The CD release of the album was met with great critical acclaim, particularly in the U.K., with the band even given the honor of cover stars in Zero Tolerance, Terrorizer and Organ magazines.

GALLHAMMER's DVD release, "Ruin of a Church", captured the band live and in scintillating form at Colchester Arts Centre, a stunning venue on the site of a deconsecrated church, on their 2007 European tour. The DVD includes additional footage from the tour, plus promo videos, gallery, and an intriguing video interview with the band. The audio mix and production was executed by Justin Broadrick (NAPALM DEATH, GODFLESH, JESU).

Pretty upsetting that they're just a drum n' bass group now. Mika provided excellent vocals live. Fuck. Hopefully their new material holds up.

vulva 04.17.2011 03:30 PM

also the album's been delayed to may =(

Dr. Eugene Felikson 04.20.2011 07:30 AM

Damn! Well hopefully it's for the better.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 04.01.2019 12:23 PM

These days I prefer a much cleaner, elaborate production. Prog or post metal sync heavenly with a thick mug of dark roast coffee, a scented candle from TJ Maxx, and some hot wings. I'm currently exploring sub-sub-genres like Atmosludge and Doomgaze, but overall my preference in metal is...

Deftones, Gojira, Isis, Mastodon, Animals as Leaders, Tool, Rolo Tomassi, Opeth, Jesu, Baroness, Deafheaven, Palms, Agalloch, Pelican, Skeletonwitch, Kayo Dot, Alcest, Pallbearer, Kylesa, Revocation, Lamb of God, Bosse-de-Nage, Sumac, Myrkur, Neurosis, Converge, Dark Funeral...

Y'know, mostly "hipster shit".
