You can't go wrong with Coltrane really, and if you're like me, you will need it all. I'm still working on that, there is 100+ releases. Impulse records era is my fave, though earlier discs are awesome too.

Absolutely. Not for someoncense just discovering him, of course, but Ascensipn is his best work and one if my favorite albums ever ( that is, if you consider the Verve reissue containing I and II an album.)

Not sure if this has been mentioned as it is pretty goddamn obvious, but Coltrane's work with Miles Davis's quin/sextet is universally required listening. He is the highlight of even Kind of Blue in my opinion. I just listened to the album yesterday for the first time in years and his solos come close to upstaging Miles himself.
