neurosis
morbid angel when they play slow, like in "god of emptiness" and "where the slime live" some prurient some lasse marhaug some residents some smegma xxx maniak wigrid benighted in sodom i remember being intimidated by brujeria's matando güeros back in the day, but they aren't all that, especially after "don quijote marihuano". although i'm generally not that disturbed by music...generally. |
haha i didn't even think to list residents.. one of my favorite bands.. yeah, they have some scary shit.

I was talking more 1981-85 era. You know, with the pounding and the screaming and the bloodletting and whatnot. I had some friends that thought Skinny Puppy were scary in the 80s (we were teenagers), but I always thought they were funny. Some Legendary Pink Dots stuff from the early and mid-80s is pretty unnerving. Early Laibach used to freak me out when I was a kid, but then they turned into a comedy act and I wound up thinking all of their stuff was funny after that. I still like the early material a lot, but it's no longer "scary" to me. The Residents' "Eskimo" and "Freakshow" LPs have some pretty freaky passages. |

I'm incapable of listening to that tune without having a nice, polite, middle-class riot of dancing, so, in theory, that song sounds like my limbs gyrating manically rather than being scary. It is one of the better songs of ever though. I'd have to side with a lot of contemporary composers on the disturbing side of things. Schnitkke, Ligeti, Lutoslawski, the Stravinsky of the Rites, Mahler when he's not being all gay and romantic, Penderecki (even later stuff - ooh). Sometimes I get that mood where Jandek does what he's meant to, but mostly I find it less interesting. I listened to a Francesco Lopez piece last night [untitled number something] while I was sleeping. It was amazing, woke up to this horrible bee noise, someone breathing and a rhythmically off-set grandfather clock. So very wrong. Obviously there's your Diamandas and your Hainos. Otherwise, it's all been mentioned. Assuming someone's mentioned C93. Have they? To be honest, I skim more than ever these days, and I couldn't be fucked to read everything in the first place. |
when rob instigator was but a wee lad
the first Suicidal tendencies album really weirded/disturbed/creeped me out. listening to saw your mommy and your mommy's dead, or suicidal failure at age 13 trying not to have mom or dad walk in and listen to it was nerve-wracking. when I was 13 and first heard the Misfits, especially die die my darling and Mommny Can I Go Out And Kill Tonite? when I was 17 and first heard Skinny Puppy, tha shit creeped me out bad. just weird weird stuff. "Make sure we're properly dead before you start, Ol' Ripbeak!" when I was 18 and I first heard Confusion is Sex all the way through. That shit FUCKED ME UP. it literally scared me. the first time I danced to A DAISY CHAIN FOR SATAN by My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, I was like "what the fuck am I dancing to?" especially the tortured addict screams. I love that song http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN0yI-ambNY tripping acid with The Instigators and listening to Naked City. also, the first time my man Mike Grayum showed me and played me the BRUJERIA "Machetazos" single. fuck! so many disturbing bands and times. |
and who can forget the first time they sat and listened to the early butthole surfers!!!!!!!!
|
never heard of sparks before, just checked them out. that is some weird weird shit.

The Birthday Party (or at least the few vids I saw of them as I don't know them well)
Early Sonic Youth The Slayer of Reign in blood The Cure (Pornography era) The Tim Buckley of Lorca and Starsailor |

Slow on the uptake. Thank you though. It gives me chills just looking at that picture. |
The Cure (Mostly Pornography)
Confusion is Sex at one in the morning. Thom Yorke |
^Yorke ? Yeah, he's so depressing...^
Confusion is Sex... Well, it's dark, but I don't find it scary or disturbing. Why ? |
I don't understand why Sparks should be in this thread at all. They're anything but scary.
Anyway, the first bands that sprung to mind were Univers Zero (the Heresie album, in particular) and the '71-'73 period of Tangerine Dream. Miles Davis' 70's material is pretty scary as well. |

WTFuck?!?!?! Here's my thoughts, courtesy of me on msn: k-krack says: It's like Abba meets USAISAMONSTER at a gay dance club that's playing Kraftwerk, and everyone inside is high on helium. |
The first time I listened to the Butthole Surfers, it was by watching the Blind Eye Sees All video. Very disturbing.
And the Crucifucks. I know I would be worried if I saw Doc Corbin Dart suddenly start cutting his face mid song. |
bauhaus were not even disturbing.
|
Early SPK - 'Despair' freaked me out first time I heard it.
2nd Annual Report era TG Metgumnerbone VDO - esp. Music for Hashishins Early PTV Zos Kia Club Moral/Bum Collar Whitehouse Early Current 93 |
Definitely The Birthday party
Also early Neubauten. I would've been scared at the Hanatarash show that involved the venue destruction with a backhoe. |

Oh yes, why did I forget Francisco Lopez? I find Third Eye Foundation's 'Lions Writing The Bible' a bit whooooo, but that is probably because it was used in Chris Morris' Jam and it stuck with me. Your Diamandas and C93's should be there for obvious reasons. Philip Jeck can be rather freakish if played at night, and so can certain Merzbow stuff. In fact, I urge you to play Jeck with the lights off in your room at 2:00 am. Tell me if that doesn't make you feel a little bit queasy. |
|
Oh, crikey, yes, Diamanda.

how would you know? You were all of negative 10 years old when they came out? :P bands and art has to be taken in context. in the early 50's LITTLE RICHARD scared the fucking living shit out of parents! |

are you just making up band names? ha ha! |

Never found Bahuaus disturbing, even as a kid. I'll rep anyone who can remember the name of the journalist who interviewed the band on stage and caused them to walk out.

that's cuz you were born a dark and disturbed mo-fo sarramkrop!

Saying this quietly because I don't want a reputation. I quite like their first record [downloaded illegally, I might add] because of the irony of kids singing, quite innocently, utter horrific songs. I don't even think they're racists proper at that point, they're just entirely happy, it seems, to sing these songs. Scary for different reasons, yes. |

Jeck is the master of woozy soundscapes. I thoroughly hate the soundscapes word, but I think he's very good. I've mentioned Philip Randall and Pauline Malign before, they are one of the few noise artistes who go far too far with the 'shock' factor but still manage to disturb somewhat. Sainkho Namchylak is another one who's capable of making really unpleasant, genuinely so, sounds, but is also frequently pretty benign (no bad thing). |
Swans Swans and Swans

Nope. Pick a name and I'll upload some of their stuff for ya.:) Remember, I'm considerably older than most people on this board, and most of the bands that freaked me out have long since ceased to exist. I was lucky enough to get to see a few of these 'scary bands' at the height of their powers. I was nearly killed by a huge chain being wielded by Graeme Revell at an SPK gig - it went through my hair, missed my skull by about an inch. I used to go and watch PTV play regularly, around the time they were being accused of satanism and baby murdering by the British press. Laibach at the Zap Club in Brighton was scary - the band came on stage wearing antlers and jackboots and their support band was an old man chopping a log with a big fuck off axe. Swans at the Zap was pretty intense too - just the sheer volume! Bauhaus were NOT scary! |

Swans is the obvious choice if youve ever heard them, Your Property is the one which is especially horriffic to my ears.
Unknown Pleasures is a very unsettling album and its got nothing to do with the fact he killed himself. I remember hearing it for the first time when i was 16 or so and thinking that every piece of music made since was redundant and pointless. Ive always seen Black Sabbath as having more in common with Pink Floyd, Can, and that sort of experimental end of 60s music than Metallica or Iron Maiden, i think its just the feel of their sound. As such they still have a definitively otherwordly feel about their music to me. |
I have to say, it doesn't come across on record, but Atari Teenage Riot had the most brilliantly confusing and violent live show I've ever seen. Still the loudest band I can think of.
