I stopped buying CD's a while back... I'm only interested in Vinyl now, after not buying any for at least 15 years.

I can't believe I fell for the CD racket.

SYRFox 01.29.2008 12:58 PM

The album is now floating on the Internet...

atsonicpark 01.29.2008 07:28 PM

Thanks for the tip!

SYRFox 01.30.2008 01:23 AM

You're welcome. I have yet to listen to it, but at least I have it =)

PAULYBEE2656 01.30.2008 07:13 AM

its great! thier best since lp5

SYRFox 01.30.2008 07:27 AM

Rale is wonderful. So far my favorite song off it.

atsonicpark 02.07.2008 12:04 PM

My favorite tracks are track 7 and 18. (I'm not going to bother with song titles as they're ridiculous)

Pauly sent this to me -- man, has there been a Pauly appreciation thread yet? He always sends me good shit. Love that man!

Anyway, this is their best album so far and the best album of 2008 so far.

Everyneurotic 02.07.2008 12:07 PM

at first listen, i thought it was awful, like just random sounds.

at second listen, i thought it was better but i still think it's not all that.

Are you joking?

atsonicpark 02.07.2008 12:14 PM

I listened to it 10 times in one day... :)

So full of sounds and life and... wow. I dunno. So many amazing puzzles of sounds happening, configuring, reconfiguring..

Truely brilliant.

atsonicpark 02.07.2008 12:15 PM

Slavo.. Why would I be joking? I have everything they've done and have listened to them for a good 5 years now. I'm very passionate about them and have all their stuff memorized. It took me a while to get into but now that I'm there, I'm in love...

This album is a masterpiece. Maybe "Draft" comes close to toppling it and maybe the newness will wear off.. but.. the album is so full of ideas .. I dunno. It's just great. It's addicting. I read an interview with them recently that said all their fans should just about to be close to understanding "Untilted". That seems like a pretty pretentious and ridiculous thing to say. Though that album's great, it's pretty immediate and catchy compared to this. This album has simultaneously their most melodic, noisey, complicated, straightforward, and beautiful work.

It's most definitely not random. I've dabbling in making glitchy music like this (which is really boring to make after a while and usually boring to listen to), and I can safely say that there could be some random qualities to their sounds (and indeed there are "generative" techniques employed, which is a bit different), but they definitely have some stuff going on that is meticulously and brilliantly programmed and arranged.

Also, the bass on this album is incredible.

Autechre are very consistent and don't flood the market with bullshit, and I really appreciate that.. on the other hand, the preorders with the "Second disc".. I'm taking a wild guess the second disc will be awful.. hmph.

Anyway, great band, great album, we've still got a long long way to go for music this year so I'm sure it'll be forgotten by me by December 31st, but the only other albums I've heard that come close to this are the new Autistic Daughters and the new Dengue Fever...

Hm, I'm a huge ae fan myself and this album is some serious great stuff, but I think it just can't stand a chance compared to Tri Repetae (melodic, moody yet cold kinda electronica) and Draft 7.30 (Autechre at its most striking, mashed and crushed, chaotic bits and pieces, music equivalent of strong caffeine rush).

atsonicpark 02.07.2008 12:27 PM

I dunno man..

I'm not too wild about Tri, but we definitely agree on Draft...

Even if this album isn't their best (and again, I'll figure that out in time -- it's still new and shiny), it's up there.

I guess my only problem with this album, now that I think of it, is that there are too many short songs. I loved Untitled, because there were songs 9 minutes, 15 minutes, etc. in length, which are great to get lost in. This one seems more made for the ADD set, the ipod generation, whatever..

But I dunno.. perhaps long songs wouldn't have worked on this album....

_slavo_ 02.11.2008 05:21 AM

I second that.

interview

saoq 02.18.2008 02:17 PM

too many silly melodies. too many tiny chords with square/saw wforms.
programming is fine, but that's a given nowdays, esp. for acts like AE.

tankakern is great. i liked outh9x

i like autechre when they the more abstact longish thingy, like in untilted.

edit: at moments it sounds a bit cheesy too

Glice 02.18.2008 02:45 PM

Autechre make no sense to me without drugs. And I don't do much drugs these days.

Black Dog = Bestest.

atsonicpark 02.19.2008 06:27 AM

What makes a "silly" melody?

PAULYBEE2656 02.19.2008 06:32 AM

thats what i miss about autechre, the silly melodies! i mean lp5 was laced with them and thats their finest work i reckon. i saw autechre live once and it was appaling, it was just computers making fuck ups and the sound of a cd sticking but yet the crowd were still "finding the beat" to dance to...... funny funny sight to behold. i was assured that there was an actual glitch in autechres equipment! im gonna catch them in dublin on their annual visit next time definatly.

atsonicpark 02.19.2008 06:44 AM

so, a silly melody is ... ? I mean, I think I have a grasp of the concept, because some melodies in electronic music can sound over-the-top but it's usually not the melodies themselves that are bad, it's the synth tone they used to play the melody.

Like, I think squarepusher has some brilliant melodies but perhaps he has used a synth with a ... not-that-cool .. of a tone on it .. so does qualify the melody as being "silly" or...

I'm thinking too hard about this..

PAULYBEE2656 02.19.2008 06:49 AM

im guessing a silly melody are the simple, casio type 4 or 5 notes that are repeated over and over the entire piece of hard mettalic beats and loud beeps and whisses that ae use. the best example of which i can think of is on the 2nd track (cant think of name) on their 1995 peel sessions e.p. after lp5, my favourte ae release.

the melodies completely dissapeared for a while after that but again they are back , more subtley, on the new album which by the way, i love even more now.

basscadet.... a genius of a song!

_slavo_ 02.19.2008 06:53 AM

Yeah, basscadet rocks. Also the stuff on Tri Repetae, Anvil Vapre etc. The melodies used to play an important role in ae's music back in the days.

sarramkrop 02.19.2008 06:54 AM

Silly melody in this sort of electronic music = childlike sounding melody*, the sort of fragile and bedtime sounds that'll put your baby to bed. If memory doesn't fail me, didn't our friend Authecre get inspired to make a track by carpol, which you give to your baby before you put him/her to sleep?

*See also Telefunken and their ice cream van music inspired album.

atsonicpark 02.19.2008 07:02 AM

Hmm. Well, with that in mind, I disagree with the poster who said the new album has "silly" melodies. It has melodies, but they're... non-silly.

Haha.

Fucking descriptioner-of-music of the year is me.

the silliness?

methinks it's a combination of the actual melodic line and the timbre used.
the silliness archetype for me is
square waves+no filter+ quick attack+straight 8th notes. no?
think of those alphaville hit singles. i can't really pin it down...

specific song examples:

SILLY

IO.
perlence.
chenc9

NOT SILLY, GREAT

rae / lp5
dropp / ep
untilted, except ipacial section, fermium (silly, pulls it off)
++AROVANE ( artist)
++BOLA (artist)

RATHER SILLY, BUT PULLS IT OFF NICELY or even GREATLY
777 lp5
Eidetic Casein
++APHEX TWIN (artist)
++PLAID (artist)

atsonicpark 02.20.2008 01:48 AM

I see.

SYRFox 02.22.2008 03:35 AM

Tankakern is really a fantastic track, probably one my Autechre's favorite now. That massive bass goes perfect with those furious beats.

sarramkrop 02.22.2008 04:03 AM

I've finally managed to listen to this record and it's ok, nothing more.

atsonicpark 03.22.2008 06:56 AM

bump
!

atsonicpark 09.22.2009 09:05 PM

track # 18 "chenc9" – 4:57

This is the defining track in all of Autechre's catalogue.
