that's just where it ended up... and swa(y) is right, you can do just fine without college and it largely depends on where you live (geographically but also in socio-economic terms) and what you were told as a child by parents, teachers etc. i grew up in an ivy league college town and my dad worked r&d in the aerospace industry... both my parents had masters' and my dad had a phd... so i was conditioned at a very early age to want an even goofier hat.

damn, the problem with #2 is not the hat but the face

this college digression in the threads reminds me that my recent heroine/movie crush, miranda july, is a college dropout.

woodie allen is also my hero but i never had a crush on him. he was kicked out of NYU.

in any case, if what you do that matters. if you're going to be a working stiff on someone's payroll, a degree will help. if you wanna be a creative person, quit wasting time & just create.

i write songs and play music and take pictures and paint and draw for FUN.

I dropped out of college and I own a house and stuff.

i dont live in an area with houses. i own a lot of furniture and records and shoes and clothes. i am financially stable.
the next step is to go all soft and squishy and pop out a kid.

I used to sport FUCKED up hates way more tatterred than that one, but it was 1991-1993

if you want to be a PROFESSIONAL, you have to go to university of some kind.
if you want to be a doctor, an architect, a surgeon, an astronaut, a professor, an accountant, hell, most anything that is not a trade, you HAVE to go to college.

if you want to be a tradesman, a plumber, a mechanic, a carpenter, etc, you still have to go to trade school for a few years!


school is where it's at, and it is what you make of it.

Tht being said, the four-year Liberal Arts degree is completely obsolete, and its continuing presence is one of the biggest lies ever bought wholesale by Modern America.
Applied sciences, medicine, plumbing and carpentry are all things one can learn and reap material benefits from the investment. The four year Liberal Arts degree is just a way to rack up debt for the sake of "personal enrichment" that can easily be achieved FREE OF CHARGE.

So what about people who learn as they practice their chosen/forced upon profession? Say, you start working as a painter and decorator, and progressively you are sent to training courses to aquire new skills, all while you have also started earning an income as a trainee.

All the theory that you learn comes to nothing unless you have a daily mean to put it into practice, which very much happens to a lot of people who have studied a specific thing and end up doing something different from their initial aspirations.
