I post on the same message board (or two actually) as sun city girl, who basically is the embodiment of the "skene". and I've seen him in person.

ChocolateJesus 01.30.2008 02:57 PM

I went to school in Choctaw with members of:

Traindodge and Gunfighter.

other than that, I live in the same town as a bunch of crappy bands, chief crappy band being the Flaming Lips. What a bunch of douchebags.

Cue scathing screamingskull usernote in 3...2...1...

atsonicpark 01.30.2008 03:12 PM

Mostly noise bands. Yellow Swans, Goslings, shit like that. Connected with Murder by Death a little bit, even though I don't like them. I almost got into a fight with a member of Devil Wears Prada, some shitty scene band. Me and Jamie Stewart used to email each other. Me and Little Jimmy Urine from MSI email each other still every now and then. The guy from Racebannon is in my town. My ex-girlfriend fucked the drummer of My Chemical Romance about 5 1/2 years ago. I met MONG HANG. Shit like that. Nothing big, I guess.............

And yeah, I was being serious about the My Chemical Romance thing.

Um.. I have met Bill Gates and Steve Albini though. That's probably more interesting than any of the above stuff, haha...

I would like to state that ChocolateJesus was not paid or offered any sort of compensation for the above statement.

we here at Slowly Corp wouldn't dream of making the type of disparaging remarks that were posted above regarding any person or persons associated with Lovely Sorts of Death.

shame on you, ChocolateJesus. shame on you.

I have introduced three members of this board to members of the band "Sonic Youth".

sonicl 01.30.2008 03:57 PM

Or I suppose I could turn things around and say that I have introduced all four members of the band "Sonic Youth" to members of this board.

You don't include that pic of me and Kim you shot at Roundhouse to that list, do you?

Confucious is sex 01.30.2008 04:07 PM

I used to work with a guy from a great band that none of you will have heard of because they are so 'hip' and/or 'scene'.

Confucious is sex 01.30.2008 04:09 PM

Oh, and I totally met Thurston Moore at ATP '06. We connected, you know? We're collaborating on new material which should be released in the Fall.

hat and beard 01.30.2008 04:34 PM

Waaaaaaaaaay back when (according to family lore) my siblings and I (yet wrapped in swaddling clothes) were playmates of none other than some guy from some famous band called Jimmy Eat World.

Cantankerous 01.30.2008 04:45 PM

y'all would get jealous so i'm gonna keep my big mouth shut
also not into namedropping

HaydenAsche 01.30.2008 04:49 PM

Oh, I forgot. Probably the most cool/indie one I can mention: I interviewed Ches' Smith from Congs for Brums and Xiu Xiu. He was really cool. Afterwords, he introduced me to Jamie Stewart and I proposed to Jamie. It was cute. Then, David and I went outside and smoked a cigarette and didn't say anything. I felt so hip.

Also, I saw P.O.S. and Cancer in this little shit town like an hour away from where I live. The guy from Cancer needed bud and I found him a bag of the danks afterwords. We smoked a bowl together. They weren't really anything special. Just some wannabe-rhymesayers band. P.O.S. is the shit, though.

Namedropping makes you so cool.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 01.30.2008 05:10 PM

I'm connected to a ton of bands, but saying why would be in disreguard to the privacy of the people who connect me to such bands.

DEVO
Don Caballero
Rapeman
Shellac
Big Black
Jesus Lizard
Scratch Acid
Pavement
Sarah McLaughlin (haha I know, apparently my mom's cousin is married to her sibling)
Marilyn Manson
Einsturzende Neubauten
Nick Cave
Atari Teenage Riot
Depeche Mode

Disgruntled Youth 01.30.2008 05:40 PM

Toilet & Bowels 01.30.2008 05:47 PM

i know one of the more well known people from the london improv scene to say hi to, but his name probably wouldn't mean much to anyone aside from glice.

Glice 01.30.2008 05:54 PM

I suspect I know the same person in the same capacity, as well as a few other people from the same scene from the same place in the same capacity. Rubbish.

Toilet & Bowels 01.30.2008 06:05 PM

yeah, but that's the best i can do. not that i really give a shit about any of the people here saying they know so&so, unless porkmarras can get me in there with diamanda galas that is.

I, like Disgruntled Youth, live in the same town as Hair Police, Warmer Milks, Caves, Eyes and Arms of Smoke, Tight Leather and more bands of that sort.

As far as connections go maybe Hair Police, I've met/talked with them at shows before and one of their roomates is a friend of mine.

Danny Himself 01.31.2008 08:03 AM

My grandfather used to hang out on Formby Beach with some members of The Beatles, though I forget which ones exactly. Pre-fame, of course..

Didn't you get high with George Clinton once?

Oh yesss, I completely forgot as this is not one of my crowning achievements, but is indeed proper for this thread. I smoked out with George Clinton and the club owner in the womens bathroom when I was about 12. It was weird, after smoking some kill and looking at George, he resembled the predator if he was into acid instead of killing humans.

My mum once met John Peel at a music festival and he invited her and her friends back to his caravan where they listened to records but they soon left because there was a weird man there.

John Peel (real name Shirley Crabtree) has since died.

My dad once saw Paul McCartney at Leeds airport and was going to say 'hello' to him, to put him at ease because he was staring at him, but suddenly got an overwhelming urge to shout 'wanker!' at him instead (even though he liked him in The Beatles) out of curiosity to see how he would react, much like the urge which possesses one when one is in a public toilet to take a bite out of one of those lemon-flavoured bowl fresheners to see how they taste; so he stared at him for a few more seconds and ran off.

At several music festivals I have been within a 15-metre radius of many rock stars.

Someone who posts on the same Internet forum as me knows a guy from Aids Wolf. Etc.

ScreamingSchool 02.11.2008 12:28 AM

I opened for Lydia Lunch once in 2004 on her spoken word tour. Does that connect me with Teenage Jesus? Also my friend is the direct nephew of Jacko Pastorious. I took a piss next to John S. Hall of King Missile...none of these cuts it, do they?

Dead-Air 02.11.2008 12:59 AM

This seems weird to me, actually, but...

Mudhoney - went to school in Bellingham with Steve, still friendly if not particularly in touch
Unwound - pretty good friends with everyone except Sarah who I didn't really know. I think Vern is still a My Space friend, though he constantly changes his profile name to stay under the radar, so I'm not even sure.
Fitz of Depression - Vern plays for them now, and Jerry Ziegler their current drummer is a friendly acquaintance.
And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Went to school at Evergreen with Conrad and usually hang out backstage with them when they're here since my wife was his first girlfriend and also played in Trail of Dead herself.
Melvins (via Karp) - Jarrad is a pretty good friend though we haven't talked in a few years. The fact he's playing bass for them now is among the weirdest things to eventually happen of this sort I can think of. All of Karp were pretty good friends and they played at my 30th birthday party. Chris played in the Dead Air Fresheners with me for awhile too.
Nirvana - well I had an ex-girlfriend who'd slept with both Kurt and Dave on separate occasions. My ex-wife was friends with their guitar tech Earnie too and I went to his wedding.
Steve Fisk - pretty good friends, mostly by email, and he's going to be headlining the show I'm putting on at the 14th Annual Olympia Experimental Music Festival
Chris Knox - stayed at my apartment in Oly once, we got on really well
Amy Denio - good friends for years, she's also playing the Oly Fest show I'm currating in June
Crank Sturgeon - good friend, also playing that same show
Bikini Kill - I consider Kathleen a friend though we were never close or anything. She did compliment my band once, and my djing another time.
Calvin Johnson - He'd probably say we're friends. I like him.
Some Velvet Sidewalk - friendly with Al, we still exchange emails a bit
Kramer - contacted me and said he wanted to record and/or produce Dead Air Fresheners, I just don't have the money to pay him fairly at this time.
Lisa "Suckdog" Carver - I made dinner for her when she came through Portland touring her book "Drugs Are Nice". My wife had a pretty close internet friendship with her and appears on the video of the same name.
Sebadoh - perhaps my favorite "connection"; I never met them, but when they were playing in Olympia in the late '90s a crazy chick I knew was the promoter. I had to work at Kinko's that night, so I couldn't go to the show. Apparently, the boys were out of weed and expected their promoter to score for them, and she didn't know anyone that smoked weed besides me. So she called my house and got my (now ex-) wife who proceeded to go out to Evergreen with my weed and smoke out the band (leaving of course none for me!) So though I didn't meet Sebadoh, Lou Barlow still smoke my pot!

Funny thing is, I agree with floatingslowly about name dropping. I just happened to live in some particular times and places where a lot of people got really famous on this certain indie level. I didn't do anything different than somebody who lived somewhere else and went to shows and maybe djed and/or started their own band. If you do those things you make friends.

pbradley 02.11.2008 02:20 AM

I post on Sonic Youth's message board. :)

I use to talk with Marathon's guitarist on a message board. Then they broke up and I think he is with Polar Bear Club. Don't really listen to them, though.

Took a leak in a bathroom with Wayne Coyne at the SF Fearless Freaks premier. More awkward than anything, really.

i wish i even came in talking distance to any of those people/bands you mentioned. you're pretty lucky.

i was a roadie for a hardcore band which had an ex member of this tampa hardcore band the blackout terror whom was friends with reversal of man. yeah that's about it. my brother got headbutted by wesley willis, in a friendly way.

lots of random connections due doing artwork for a variety of bands ... the bigger of bunch being:

sonic youth - did a show poster, met thurston periodically and he knows who i am which is cool ...
sunburned hand - first of the bigger bands i have done artwork for. friendly with a bunch of members ...
lsd march - did artwork for him. got a nice email saying he really liked it
otto from devendra's tour band and vetiver amongst others is an old friend. we used to go to each other's respective record shops when living in rochester ...
pengo - talk to these guys pretty frequently mostly due to old connections to rochester
vxpxc - became friendly with these guys via my friend adam and later did artwork with them. talk to grant pretty frequently these days ...
ben nash- just finished artwork for 2 of his albums. its going to be sick!
voice of the seven woods - rick and i talk often, mostly of admiration for each others work and wanting to work with each other in the future ...

there is more, but i often space on who because more than anything they are friends not just band members ...
