Death & the Maiden 03.27.2008 11:44 PM

Television - Marquee Moon
Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation
The Verlaines - You're Just Too Obscure For Me... (Though this is a compilation)

I love Daydream Nation but there's several tracks on it I don't enjoy as much as the rest of the album.

Was that a stab at being controversial?

Journalist: ''What is your favourite Bob Dylan album?''

Cantanky: ''I know, nobody will agree with me on this, but Blonde On Blonde by Bob Dylan is perfect from start to finish. I know, nobody has said this before, but, you see, I am different.''

Journalist: ''Ok, I'm now off to scratch my arse.''

Cantanky: ''No, please, wait! I will explain what I meant with that, yeah?''

Torn Curtain 03.30.2008 10:05 AM

The Cure - Disintegration
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Scott Walker - Scott 4

nowideau 03.30.2008 10:16 AM

Miles Davis: In a Silent Way

Haha, I suppose that's cheating because the record only consists of two cuts, but what cuts they are. It's the sort of record I could happily listen to all the way through, start over and repeat the process about a dozen times.

John Coltrane: Love Supreme

Most jazz albums have tracks I would skip, but not this baby.

Sonic Youth: Murray Street (minus Plastic Sun but come on, that's one track)

Refused: The Shape of Punk to Come

batreleaser 03.30.2008 01:10 PM

augustus pablo-king tubby meets the rockers uptown

the ikara cult 03.30.2008 09:16 PM

there are many albums which are amazing because they have songs of varying wonderfulness, but off the top of my head the ones that are on the same level are

The Holy Bible - Manic Street Preachers
Atomiser - Big Black
Hex Enduction hour - The Fall
Kid A - Radiohead
Revolver - Beatles

uhler 03.30.2008 09:33 PM

slant 6- soda pop rip off
bratmobile- potty mouth

batreleaser 03.30.2008 10:39 PM

mount shasta-put the creep on

the cows-cunning stunts

the residents-commerical album

devo-are we not men? we are devo!

i can never pick a standout on this because they are (almost) all of ABSOLUTELY EQUAL quality.

i was thinking about picking that album.

fugazifan 03.30.2008 11:03 PM

see as much as i love these albums that people are stating, there are still standout tracks on some of them that are simply better than the rest

on big black's atomizer, all the song s are amazing, but kerosene and passing complection, for me at lerast, are on such a different level than the rest of the album. thats not saying anything negative about the rest of the album, only ho amazing those tracks are.

and on double nickels there are a few songs that are less great
dont look now, toadies, dr wu.
not bad songs (i love dr wu) but not on the same level as the rest of the album

no, i'm not trying to be controversial. it's a fucking excellent album, not to say it's perfect.

daydream nation
dark side of the moon

^ both consistent, cohesive pieces of work

also patti smith - radio ethiopia

batreleaser 03.30.2008 11:47 PM

double nickels on the dime is one of my all time favorites too, and pretty much defined my 17-18 highschool days, as a stoner hippy punk, this record was perfect, combining some old classic rock that i was into'd to when i was real little by my dad with the hardcore punk that i was obsessed with (dino jr. was the other big one), but there are so many songs on there, that about half are better than the other half.

Silent Dan Speaks 03.31.2008 12:20 AM

The Clash-s/t. Every song absolutely rules. London Calling is also full of great songs, but some are definetly better than others.

Death & the Maiden 03.31.2008 12:23 AM

Sonic Youth - Sister
Ramones - It's Alive/Ramones/Rocket To Russia

Sonic Youth - EVOL

batreleaser 03.31.2008 02:52 PM

evol id say is probably the youth record that i think is their most consistenly excellent, but then again expressway to yr skull is easily one of the best songs ever created. actually, s/t, confusion is sex, badmoon rising, evol, sister, daydream nation is the most incredibly perfect evolution of records of any band ever. i mean, starting off as this totally dissonant, no wave influence, noise punk band, and then evolving all the way to daydream nation, which is among that small elite group of records that perfectly pair pop song accesibility with avant garde experimentation and feedback. i havnt loveed any post 80 youth record as much as any of these, though murray street and nyc ghosts anf floweers come close, but just because of those records from the 80's, they will always been one of my favorite bands.

Some of us didn't get the CD re-issue, and thus cannot agree with the above. See also The Birthday Party's Junkyard, which is ruined in the re-issues, to my ears.

Cantankerous 03.31.2008 03:45 PM

why does everyone hate bubblegum?

LifeDistortion 03.31.2008 03:48 PM

Pixies- Come on Pilgrim

The Beatles-The Magical Mystery Tour

Uhh Bubblegum is horrible. So unnecessary

Cantankerous 04.01.2008 02:24 AM

you fucking people are out of your heads

Death & the Maiden 04.01.2008 02:31 AM

I really like Bubblegum.

Cantankerous 04.01.2008 02:34 AM

kim fowley (the man who wrote bubblegum) = genius

Death & the Maiden 04.01.2008 02:43 AM

I just listened to EVOL, and now Death To Our Friends, Secret Girls and Marilyn Moore sound good to me, so I'll say EVOL.

ZEROpumpkins 04.01.2008 02:43 AM

I maintain my opinion

Death & the Maiden 04.01.2008 02:46 AM

Einstuerzende Neubauten - Halber Mensch
All of the songs are really good, except for the title track and Das Schaben (which I think is only a bonus track anyway).

Death & The Maiden:
Thanks for reminding me that I do NOT have the most obscure taste of all 16 year olds in Sydney. Lucky bastard!

Death & the Maiden 04.01.2008 05:30 AM

I'm not actually located in Sydney, so you might still hold that title. And I'm not 16 yet (I will be in 9 days though).

ZEROpumpkins 04.01.2008 06:04 AM

Camden is considered part of Sydney. If not, it will be soon. I lolled when I saw the article on the news where half your town gathered to oppose the building of the Islamic school.

Anyhoo, I have dibsies on the birthday thread in 9 days.

sarramkrop 04.01.2008 10:19 AM

Suicide-Suicide

I can't name a bad song as such on that one. The name of this thread makes it a little difficult to think of albums that accomplish the task.

Too many records have tracks that take second or third best status but get dragged along by the better ones. Maybe albums by Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Keiji Haino, Birchville Cat Motel etc are nearer that target because of the free-form nature of what's in them, who knows? I find it difficult to think of a perfect record because of the format in question.
