if you're band isn't objectively fucking amazing (or you're Mark E. Smith) you don't have the right to act like an arrogant prick in interviews... they haven't earned that yet..

DNAINTHEDNA 06.12.2008 06:19 AM

this bands new name is QUEERHUNTER...no joke at least for one release

split with a certain band really soon...

fluxequalsrad 06.13.2008 12:02 AM

One complaint:

On Cryptograms, they feel the need to establish that they are a stoner band by having the lighter going off and the inhaling sound at the beginning of 'Spring Hall Convert', its not like we don't get that you smoke pot.

Its painfully obvious in interviews where the singer talks about 'lyrics bleeding into the music' as being something that turns him on, and its just painfully obvious that its also just a masking of his stoner lyrics which will never be 'inpenetrable' no matter how barried in the mix they are -- they are still boring stoner lyrics at times.

Plus the drummer talks about how he works at american apparel so it sort of seals the whole deal for me as this band coming across as more scenester then sincere.

LEAVE DEERHUNTER ALONE!!!

lechaoscestmoi 10.28.2008 10:02 AM

microcastle came out. pitchfork gave it a 9.2.. is it THAT good?

SYRFox 10.28.2008 10:03 AM

And Tiny Mix Tapes gave it a 5 / 5
It must be really good, I wonder if I won't go to the shop today and buy it

jimbrim 10.28.2008 10:19 AM

I've heard mixed reviews on this one and I'm still asking myself if I should buy it or not.

batreleaser 10.28.2008 10:24 AM

"microcastle" is pretty good, really poppy. i wanna hear the bonus dics that came with it.

atsonicpark 10.28.2008 11:21 AM

Mehhhhhhhhhh...

noisereductions 10.28.2008 11:30 AM

I'm dying to hear it. I dnt really care about the hip factor or whatever. I really, really like the band. And I loved the Atlas Sound album from earlier this year.

Pax Americana 10.28.2008 08:42 PM

I liked Cryptograms quite a bit. I'm looking forward to hearing the new one.

chairman of the bored 10.28.2008 11:59 PM

Dont. Dont, dont, dont believe the hype. 'agoraphobia' is a decent enough song, the title track and 'nothing ever happens' are sorta fun to listen to but the rest is straight garbage. the singer said it himself. "it's for kids just getting over my chemical romance."

repeater 10.29.2008 03:23 AM

Have both cryptograms and the EP. I bought crypograms, thinking this was something Iīd really enjoy, (after all, itīs on kranky), but found it to be quite boring. I donīt know, it just seems so directionless. But I really like the flourucent grey EP. Havenīt heard the new one yet.

SYRFox 10.29.2008 04:27 AM

I listened to the album yesterday, I think it was really good. I'll buy it today

noisereductions 10.29.2008 07:19 AM

well whatever y'alls thinks... I still like them a lot. Gonna get the new one.

ps Adam... I dnt like Coldplay or Interpol.

atsonicpark 10.29.2008 08:00 AM

I was kind of kidding.

But kind of not.

noisereductions 10.29.2008 08:04 AM

I know.

I'm just saying this... Deerhunter are not about to "save rock n roll" or any shit like that. They are not revolutionary. They're not even doing something new or unheard of. But they are good. And they are interesting. And they are willing to take some chances. I also respect the warts-n-all approach. Always have. Plus, I just really loved CRYPTOGRAMS. Regardless of what the press or hipsters said about that record, the bottom line is that I JUST KEPT ON LISTENING TO IT over and over. And that is the real test in my book. I still love it.

atsonicpark 10.29.2008 10:03 AM

Sure, nothing wrong with that. It's a pretty good record.

Decayed Rhapsody 10.29.2008 10:50 PM

It hits the spot. Still prefer the Fluorescent Grey EP. Bradford intrigues me, even if he's been twattish in the past.

hahahahhaa

i've never listened to them and would like to as my best pal recommended them strongly. So i'm-a-gonna hunt.

greedrex 10.31.2008 12:17 PM

o doodz i'm so good
I swear NO PUN WAS INTENDED either in the comment or the pic above.
jeez i amaze myself. i'm so RELEVANT.

noisereductions 11.05.2008 08:35 AM

So I pretty much can not stop listening to Microcastle. I think it's great. Yes it's a lot poppier or whatever. But it's an excellent, solid album. I feel like with CRYPTOGRAMS it was about the space around the songs. And on this one it's like 'ok, how much structure can we cram into one song?' It's crazy good.

batreleaser 11.06.2008 01:33 PM

They at times remind me of like an ambient Cramps or something, like sorta Gothic Rockabilly with some beautiful use of Atmosphere. "Flourescent Grey" was great for sure, the new one is pretty good, but not gonna end up on my best of list. They have come a long fuckin way from "Turn it Up Faggot" though, that record was a piece of shit.

noisereductions 11.06.2008 01:42 PM

Yeah, I only listened to TURN IT UP once... but really I think the new one is excellent. Definitely on my best of 08 list. CRYTPO made it to my best of 07, and yet I thought it unlikely they'd do it again. But honestly I've loved this and the Atlas Sound record this year. So go figure.

Rob Instigator 11.06.2008 01:42 PM

I got to get the new one

noisereductions 11.06.2008 01:47 PM

Rob, I kind of bought it thinking "I'm probably gonna hate this and realize that Cryptograms was a fluke and never listen to Deerhunter again..." but it's f'ing great.

SYRFox 11.06.2008 01:52 PM

"Nothing Ever Happened" is GREAT

noisereductions 11.06.2008 02:08 PM

Yeah it is. The whole album is full of these sorts of melodies that just get stuck in yr head.

ihateyouth 11.06.2008 05:49 PM

I think they rip Twin Peaks' soundtrack in a terrible way.

The Earl Of Slander 11.06.2008 07:44 PM

Can't wait to buy Microcastle, but I'm trying to decide whether to hold out for the wax...

I must agree that a lot of the guitar tones, and even some melodies do remind me of Twin Peaks stuff. BUT I can not agree that it's "in a terrible way."

elix it 11.08.2008 03:10 AM

I've had the chance to see them live on more than one occasion, but never have.

Strong band, overall.

Killthosecops 11.09.2008 10:09 PM

I think they're alright. Not a fan of them. I've seen them twice. First they opened for Circa Survive. They were alright, but then the band Ours played after them and they were so bad so that made the deer hunter sound good i guess. Second time I saw them, they opened for the fall of troy and a bunch of people were booing them. They don't sound bad, just too boring for me.

atsonicpark 11.10.2008 08:23 AM

Haha. Fall of Troy fans should boo. Deerhunter, like 'em or not, will never write a song as good as F.C.P.R.E.M.I.X...

Stijn 11.10.2008 01:43 PM

I'm kinda dissapointed, was really looking forward to this record.
Cryptograms/fluorescent had some incredible songs, but this I don't like. I can't understand the appeal, there are no real hooks, nothing happens in the songs, it even aren't good pop songs. Weird era cont. is slightly better upon first listen but still nothing really special.
Maybe I just don't get it

lechaoscestmoi 11.10.2008 01:57 PM

hahahaha the fall of troy.. brings back so many memories :D

That's really weird to me. Bare in mind that I loved CRYPTOGRAMS, but my feeling on MICROCASTLE is that each song is loaded with hooks. Like I feel like the band tried to fit as many hooks into each track as possible. I mean, if you dnt like it, you dnt like it. That's fine. It IS a very different record than CRYPTO, but I definitely don't see how you dont hear any hooks in there. To me it's totally a Deerhunter pop album.

Stijn 11.10.2008 02:13 PM

Yeah it sure is a deerhunter pop album, and I like pop albums, but this seems like really safe pop to me, just regular chord patterns and conventional scales, without special chords or a few notes that give you goosebumps like on cryptograms, the only thing that can do that here is this quiet - loudapproach.
But I really want to like it, maybe I should listen to it some more

noisereductions 11.10.2008 02:17 PM

You should. I mean, I get what yr saying, but some times a song doesnt need a "special chord" and can use a conventional scale, and just be nothing more than a really great song.
