yeah power violence is a crappy name for a genre anyway. so is screamo. i mostly just call all those bands hardcore. just back then if you called a band screamo you knew they didn't sound like earth crisis or strife and if you called a band hardcore you knew they did sound similar to those bands. |
spazz and charles bronson are such good quickies. The spazz gummo love theme is epic. They branched me off to Le Scrawl.
|
Le Scrawl are amazing.
|
I could never say with a straight face that I like 'power violence' music...
What a dumb fucking name. |
It's just a name, who cares.
|
every genre name is dumb. who cares?
|
yeah like 'rock' music. HELLO, IT'S NAMED AFTER A FREAKING BIG STONE ON THE GROUND
![]() HELL YEAH ROCK ON!!! |

well just call it hardcore or punk rock. oh wait, those are shitty genre names too. |

so, is the Locust one of these bands?
and why not? |
Quote:
isn't "aggresive hardcore" redundant? |
Quote:
|
that is true. it all sounds to me like a cross between hardcore and grindcore, like grindcore without the "METAL RIFFS" you know? some good stuff, but, like much hardcore, painful after more than 15 minutes. I like that these bands release tiny EP's on 7" vinyl. that is the perfect dose to get it.

The anti-example is GBH-city babies attacked by rats. The songs are too long, there are too many songs, it could have been a cool ep. |
Oh come on, Power Violence is just downright cheesy. Imagine if you will, that you are unaware of such a genre and you ask someone what kind of music they like and they say, "POWER VIOLENCE". YOu would laugh... I promise.

i guess in the late 90's you could call the locust "screamo". i'm guessing that they got that tag from their relation with the san diego scene and they didn't play chugga chugga hardcore riffs. the locust only had one decent release and that was their first ep. the rest of their stuff is god awful. |
Is it worse than "thrash", or "soul", or most of other genre names?
|
Yes. It is thouroughly worse.

it is pretty fucking terrible indeed. power violence is a dumb fucking name for a musical genre. nearly as dumb as "grunge" "soul" music tells you exactly what it is, music to uplift the soul. "Rhythm & Blues" is exactly what it sounds like "salsa" conjures up the vibe of the frenetic Caribbean dance music "punk rock" is exactly that, rock music made by punk ass mo-fucks, degenerates, reprobates, etc. "hardcore punk" also makes lots of sense, and instantly gives you a feel for what it may sound like and what it's attitude will be. "electronica" perfectly describes the music, at least how it is created. "twee" also describes the sound and aesthetic of a music etc etc "power violence" sounds like some stupid fucking juggalo deciding to call his hardcore band something else, because it is "fierce" and "awesome" and "hard", but instead it sounds like a goddamn stupid cartoon |
Thank you rob, wow you are just getting more and more awesome.
|
I'll agree it's a horrible name, just like grindcore and new american weird or what the fuck ever the hipsters are listening and swilling PBR to these days.
|
But damn, it sounds so manly.
POWER VIOLENCE \m/ |

Isn't there something silly sounding like white belt grindcore?
|
Huh?
|
wasnt power violence a man is the bastard song or something?
dropdead owns a great shop called "armageddon" in providence specializing in extreme metal, noisecore, hardcore, etc... |
why are we still talking about the name power violence? yes it's a dumb name and i don't think any band actually called themselves power violence. it was a joke name and some kids took it seriously and it somehow became a name for a subgenre of hardcore that no one used, but fans of the bands.
|
Quote:
are dropdead still around? i used to love that band. |
The name is indeed shit, but I like the bands I've heard.

mmm! is that a style of karate ? last year i knew a girl who was a black belt grindcore, she was a very inspired sensei in the art of headbanging...but wasn't Sheena! |
Haha.
Yeah uhh I have no idea what it means or what it sounds like. |
i think power violence is a good name for a genre, it's funny.
|
I like it when genres have names that immediately tell me "don't bother investigating this genre, it's really not your kind of thing". Power Violence sounds like that kind of a genre. It sounds like a genre for jocks who think they're above jockdom because they like a really really really alternative type of music. But they're jocks anyway.
|
That's just silly. A stupid genre name shouldn't drive you away from a plethora of good music.
|
protopunk anyone?
