i love in the court...even though it's completely different than the rest of their discography.

wake of poseidon is awful though, couldn't believe it was a crimson album.

i loved it especially as a Residents fan

but king crimson is still gonna get disqualified ;)

Everyneurotic 06.09.2008 02:51 PM

i'd disqualify sonic youth because of rather ripped.

ED: residents? i heard more genesis, if anything.

Androol 06.09.2008 02:51 PM

dude!

Rob Instigator 06.09.2008 02:58 PM

yes rules.

much much much better than sebadoh

Rob Instigator 06.09.2008 03:11 PM

you've been inhaling too much Distrito federal smog my friend.

Everyneurotic 06.09.2008 03:14 PM

sebadoh: i'm too stoned to tune my guitar but the fact that it's recorded in a four track more than makes up for the lack of good songs...subject matter: i'm stoned and i hate j mascis.

Derek 06.09.2008 03:50 PM

Hahaha rep.

EDIT: You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Everyneurotic again. Woops.

that's just one record!

bubble & scrape, Smash Yr Head On The Punk Rock and Harmacy are al better than ANY yes bullshit!

Androol 06.09.2008 04:42 PM

bubble & scrape, Smash Yr Head On The Punk Rock, Bakesale, and III

Im almost in the middle of my marathon to hear the whole king crimson discography and this is amazingly solid to say the very least

batreleaser 06.09.2008 04:53 PM

best catalogs? hmmm...

well ill think of a few:

merzbow (gotta be mentioned, the dude is mindblowingly prolific, has been for 25 years, and id say alm ost all his stuff is worth listening too.
sun city girls (great variety of sounds, lots of amazing records)
sonic youth (duh, between their full lengths, syr's, eps, collabs, so much brilliant music, anyone who listens to anything could find something to dig)
sun ra (everything genius)
iannis xenakis (same as above)
weasel walter (between all the bands hes been, the luttenbachers, his free jazz quartets and sextets, xbxrx, lake of dracula, to live and shave in la (2), hatewave, contradictions, and so much more, not to mention all the bands hes recorded with, and all his improvised solo stuff, i cant even comprehend how much good records this guy has recorded on).

as for the king crimson thing, i agree theyre amazing, but they definitley have records i havnt liked that much. in the wake of poseidon and discipline spring to mind.

Mschinner 06.09.2008 05:26 PM

Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Sonic Youth. I know that Dylan and Young had some rough periods, but they were always able to "reinvent" their respective sounds. SY falls into that same category of being able to expand on their sound like Dylan and Young have.

I didnt realize they had so many albums or that their members remained so constant with anderson, squire, and howe.

atsonicpark 06.09.2008 06:26 PM

I like almost every Crimson album... My favorites are power to believe, red, and lizard..

Androol 06.09.2008 06:29 PM

I also forgot about the sonic youth movie soundtracks so Im gonna count the number of albums at 28

maybe if someone hasnt already done it Ill go through and add up exactly how many hours of original material theyve recorded.

I'd say Discipline is their second best.

luisxvi 06.10.2008 07:31 AM

Has anyone ever looked at Jim O'Rourkes catalogue of stuff? Its pretty substancial to say the least.

You've forgotten about Bakesale, Rob.

demonrail666 06.10.2008 08:21 AM

On the strength of quality product from beginning to end, I'd have to say The Beatles. Everyone else fights it out for second place a good lap or two behind.

batreleaser 06.10.2008 09:08 AM

red and in the court of the crimson king are my faves.

PAULYBEE2656 06.10.2008 09:34 AM

negativland, boredoms or derek bailey and havent been mentioned yet!

atsonicpark 06.10.2008 09:45 PM

I mentioned Boredoms.

atsonicpark 06.10.2008 09:45 PM

And Derek Bailey doesn't count because we're talking about "bands".

radarmaker 06.11.2008 06:27 AM

As with most "greatest" questions, it should be suffixed with "(except The Velvet Underground)" to be remotely debatable.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 06.11.2008 03:06 PM

there was a thread like this years ago, many surprises, this one was not as good. the winner is the Grateful Dead:

Androol 06.17.2008 08:17 AM

I still say Thinking Fellers Union Local # 282, many months later.

Another one I dunno if anyone mentioned is Stereolab.

There's very few bands with no bad releases.

i will be slayed for saying this but i absolutely love every single album pink floyd released up to and including the wall. after that they weren't rly pink floyd anymore anyway.

led zepp sucks for me.

mil_pl 09.02.2008 01:12 PM

Is it because there is usually a single central leader/clear vision that directs the band more effectively?

Death & the Maiden 09.03.2008 02:00 AM

I still stand by Ed Kuepper - three albums with The Saints, five (I think) with the Laughing Clowns, three (or four) with The Aints, and about twenty five solo albums, and not one bad album (I haven't heard them all though).

ZEROpumpkins 09.03.2008 03:49 AM

Most consistant albums with no shit parts:
Autechre

Most consistant albums with no shit parts from a rock band:
Radiohead (Assuming we pretend Pablo Honey never existed)
