They were handing out earplugs at the door?

Hahaha, awesome!

auto-aim 06.23.2008 06:59 PM

yeah - i didnt use the earplugs and my hearing is fine... though it is a little worrying during it. Those t shirts were a rip - I really wanted one though.

radarmaker 06.29.2008 06:18 PM

Saw them last night in Manchester and I have to admit, after reading some of the earlier reports it was a slight disappointment, but only as far as it wasn't THE single-best fucking thing I'd ever seen ever ever but merely really really fucking good instead.
The sound was a little muddy at times and they seemed to take a couple of songs to properly click into place, but once it did it was fantastic. To me, most of the Isn't Anything tracks stood out as being a massive step up from the studio versions (particularly Soft As Snow and Sueisfine), while the Loveless stuff was very slightly lacking.
The (27-minute) wind tunnel was something else altogether, mind - I've never felt so brutalised by sound before, and I've seen some noisy shit in the past. My clothes were shaking, hell, my face was shaking at one point. Thankfully the ringing in my ears is only minimal following a good night's sleep :)
Oh, and I couldn't help from buying one of those ridiculously priced 'Loveless' t-shirts either. The woman on the merchandise stall was quite apologetic about the price, but it is a really sweet t. Just a shame the whole thing'll probably go up in the flames the first time a hot rock hits it...

Cantankerous 06.29.2008 06:24 PM

i just saw them
they were really good. i wasn't disappointed, and it wasn't the best show i'd ever seen. i have to say it's probably the loudest band i've ever seen...now whenever someone talks it sounds like they're talking into a pillow.

radarmaker 06.29.2008 06:24 PM

Oh, and wind-tunnel aside, it never hit me as being anywhere near the extreme volume I'd been led to expect - certainly nothing to warrant the ear-plugs.
Was pleasantly surprised to find Spectrum-playing-Spacemen 3 as support too - I only caught the last couple of songs but when they were When Tomorrow Hits & Repeater it's impossible to complain :)

radarmaker 06.29.2008 06:41 PM

Oh, one more thing: THREE FUCKING POUND FIFTY for a can of Carlsberg poured into a plastic cup? Daft prices on pints at gigs I'm used to, but a sodding can? That's what, a 500% mark up over buying the same thing in an off-licence? Cunts.

Pookie 06.29.2008 06:43 PM

You two should have met up.

That would have been fun.

Toilet & Bowels 06.29.2008 06:56 PM

Cantankerous could have met up with some London board members too.

Oh, missed opportunities.

Still there'll be plenty of time for that when she moves to Brixton.

More of a promise.

Pookie 06.29.2008 07:04 PM

I'll be there for the house warming.

Toilet & Bowels 06.29.2008 07:12 PM

I'll bring my camera. You can bring Cantankerous her heroin.

GrungeMonkey 06.29.2008 07:15 PM

Best. Gig. Ever.

GrungeMonkey 06.29.2008 07:16 PM

No exaggeration

that's a lovely gesture and i appreciate it very much.

I had a nice time last Monday, I didnt go for the earplugs and i dont think i needed them until towards the end of the noisy bit when it just got exhausting after the 20 minute mark. The songs from Loveless sounded alot better than the ones from Isnt Anything (Bar Feed me with your kiss) even though i prefer the latter, but overall it was worth the money. Plus i graduated on Friday and moved out yesterday, so its been a fun week overall.

Still, those bloody tshirts were a rip.

Derek 07.03.2008 05:58 PM

Just saw them there, loud. I didn't wear the earplugs haha.

I enjoyed 'Soon' the most I think.

demonrail666 07.03.2008 06:01 PM

Soon is really impressive live I think. I'm not a massive fan of theirs but that song just sounds epic through some big fuck-off amps.

EMMAh 07.03.2008 06:09 PM

I think I'm the only person here who has never listened to My Bloody Valentine.

I haven't either and I can't be arsed getting into them.

demonrail666 07.03.2008 06:46 PM

I'm slightly surprised you've never actually heard them, but agree that in the big scheme of things, there's not much need to really.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 08:31 AM

True. Though "Isn't Anything" and "You Made me Realize" are great little records, I don't think most of their work is really worth hearing.

Here's some cool pics though:

_slavo_ 07.10.2008 09:04 AM

Is it fashionable to diss My Bloody Valentine now?

radarmaker 07.10.2008 02:05 PM

Yeah, didn't you get the memo? We've got Slint pencilled in for next week's sacred cow slaying.

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 02:39 PM

Sorry that picture didn't show up (or does it? It's not for me now), but go to http://www.ideologic.org/news/news.php and it's near the bottom. Shows MBV's 100 or so fx pedals.

Dunno if it's fashionable to insult MBV or not. Go back to any thread where I've posted about 'em -- I've always found them an important band but not deserving of the heaps of praise poured upon them. They're actually fairly inconsistent.. and I think Loveless only has a few really great songs on it.

Spiderland cover pic is so gay.

SYRFox 07.10.2008 03:14 PM

Apparently, MBV got some problems in their gig in Paris yesterday - I wasn't there unfortunately :(
Seems like they got over 105db and a law in France says that it's forbidden, so the sound was totally shut down five times during You Made Me Realise.
Vive la France

radarmaker 07.10.2008 03:22 PM

Heh - reminds me of a similar incident at a French Mogwai gig:

SYRFox 07.10.2008 03:26 PM

Haha yeah I read about that as well

PAULYBEE2656 07.10.2008 03:38 PM

are you all insane or just slightly younger than i am..

loveless is a fucking classic.. easily my favourite album ever recorded. nothing sounded like that did before its release and nothing sounded like it since. its an incredible album and you should...nay must give it at least one listen......

isnt anything is also a classic as for their creation singles.. all gems...

seriously...i not spouting turgid crap for the sake of it.. please listen to these albums and then decide wheter you give a shit about mbv or not because you are missing out..

as i said it could be an age thing. i was in the midst of mid teen record buying fury when loveless came out, i bought it on day of release and it stunned me! if it wasnt for this album 95% of "indie" music would have sounded different....influencial...yes, important... fuck yes...... now getting its plaudits 18 years on justified???? yes totally.....

how many threads have we had of mbv being great.. and now we have the dissenters... im not judging people im just speaking, nay shouting from the hip.... THE GREATEST IRISH BAND EVER RECOREDED THE GREATEST GUITAR RECORD EVER... fact!

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 03:44 PM

i have and always will love isn't anything. Every song is fucking great.

I just find Loveless boring and plodding.. songs too simple... a shitty drum sound. Just kind of Lifeless. Though there are a few songs that absolutely genius.

Derek 07.10.2008 03:45 PM

Amen.

Edit: To PAULYBEE

PAULYBEE2656 07.10.2008 03:47 PM

we rarely disagree adam but......................... i do agree on the drum sound.. it is a bit tinny but i can live with that!

sarramkrop 07.10.2008 03:48 PM

I listened to both so many times that I rarely do anymore, and Isn't Anything is by far my favourite of the two, so raw and kind of wrong-speeded. I was listening to Medicine the other day, a total good rip off of MBV back then. Does anyone know them or like them?

PAULYBEE2656 07.10.2008 03:52 PM

medicine rocked! again great e.ps and one blistering album!

atsonicpark 07.10.2008 03:52 PM

yeah medicine were great.

sarramkrop 07.10.2008 03:53 PM

Yeah, they were not bad at all for a blatant MBV rip off. I'm revisiting my yoof.

I predict a Drop Nineteens revival anytime soon.

Derek 07.10.2008 03:57 PM

Are Loop any good?

The guy next to me at the MBV gig was telling some chick that he used to listen to them all the time on the John Peel show.

_slavo_ 07.10.2008 05:00 PM

yeah yeah ok ok
nevertheless both Isn't anything and Loveless are unforgettable records, I think we can all agree on this one.

MellySingsDoom 07.10.2008 06:28 PM

Derek - check out Loop ASAP, you really won't be disappointed.
